Rumor: Nylander like Matthews unextended. Nothing to see here.

To be honest, I really don't want to lose Willy... if the top players really believe in this team and want to win then they should take a discount. Hopefully Willy not wanting to take less if the other don't puts pressure on them to sign for less

The Hawks are a team with 10m contract experience and now how to tamper proof contracts thanks to Kane and Toews.
My bud was right when he says they know all about big contracts and 2 star types leading the way and then filling out the rest bit by bit.
He was very logical and it does make a ton os sense and they do have a ton of cap.

The moment Kane and Toews got paid hawks started to really suck bad

but they had their cup runs before so that is all well worth it IMO

I'd be fine doing Nylander for Seth Jones (50% retained) + 1st

Hawks are rebuilding anyways; they don't have need for Seth Jones ;)

So, if the Core 4 made 40M for the past few years, and did not get it done, they now are all wanting to make more money, and the Leafs are going to just hand them all more money because they accomplished what?
Seems like a real great crew of guys?
Just trade one of them, and then you have a chance to revamp your D?

yes, just like most teams, they will re-sign players who have not won, and some will make more money than their previous contract.

Free agency would be a lot more fun if 100's of players switched teams every year, but it seems unrealistic.

There's not? Goals are worth more than assists. Quality of linemates? (also knows as the Zach Hyman factor) Ice Time? PP1 time?
Goals are not worth any meaningful amount more than primary assists. Even with linemate quality, competition quality, ice time, PP time, etc. considered, there is absolutely zero way for Nylander to argue that he is equal to or even particularly close to Marner offensively.

He takes 8.5-8.88 max or trade him.

We are not doing another 3-5 years of this top heavy, no playoff winning crap.

Treliving better straighten his ass out or gtfo.

I take it you're looking back several years,, have you thought about the possibility that Willy is still getting better while the other guys have stagnated? 12 points isn't much. And yes goals count more whether you like it or not. And thank god Dubas is gone.

If Matthews had back to back 60 goal seasons and showed no signs of wrist problems following the surgery, I would give him that 14 million.
And you'll watch the Leafs continue to get bounced. If Matthews is getting paid 14 million he should be wearing a ski mask.

If they ever offered Jones up there is no way they add a 1st,a RD star signed for years and only 28 we'd be lucky if it was even up.
We would have to add in Murray to offset cap so probably we add something.
He would be our missing piece though, exactly what we need on the back end.
Damn P.L. why did you have to go and mention that, now I want it real bad.

I am not denying that but AM sets the market.
If AM is signs at 14mil and let’s say AM is 30% better than Willile, then Willie’s market value is 9.8mil.

All the above is an example. By no means am I saying AM’s market value is 14mil. Or AM is 30% better than Willie.

What Willie is doing is waiting for AM to sign, which is fair. Bc if AM is sign at 12mil, and let’s say he is 30% better, then Willie will probably be good at 8.5mil.

I hope you’re right. If those are the numbers they will actually get their shot to stay together and win together.

This year he scored 40 same as Matthews, and had more points than Matthews.

Sure he played 82 games, so that's better than missing games.

So maybe take 2.5mm from Matthews and give it to Nylander.

Sure Matthews has won awards but that doesn't negate this year.
The problem is you are always negotiating with a player based on what they can do when healthy. You can suggest that 34's history shows he will deal with injuries and drops in performance in the future at least as much in the past. His agent will waive the MVP flag in front of you and insist that is what you are buying, or they will walk, and some yob GM will pay him as though he is just as durable as Ovechkin. Matthews value is based on his Hart and Rocket Trophies and because he will realistically have a good shot at being #2 in both next year. The fact that Willie is as good as an injured Matthews doesn't track. Pasta couldn't demand $15M based on how badly he crushed AM this year either.

It seems like everybody outside of Toronto uses McDavid as the limit and constructs their deals relative to his. But Matthews agent thinks he is McDavid and the other Leafs figure all they have to do is meet or exceed AM in an area and they can somehow start using him as a comp. Gaudreau had 9 more points than 34 in his MVP year and Tkachuk was only 2 back yet they signed for $9.75 and $9.5 respectively. That's the real context for what Nylanders career year is worth. WN is still not a top 10 player in the league and 50-50 as to whether he ever matches this season.

Now if Matthews wants to give Willie the money that's great but I don't see him doing anything like that. The extra million will have to come from the remaining contracts of the bottom 6 as it has every year.

Marner was better offensively last year too, but yes, of course we're discussing a multi-year sample. Contracts are not signed based on singular years.
There is a significant gap between their offensive value. Nylander has no valid argument as an equal.
And yes goals count more whether you like it or not.
One could maybe argue that primary points are more valuable than secondary assists, but there is not a meaningful difference in the value of goals and primary assists.

It would be great to have all 3 come up at the same time. Assign what you think is fair market value to each of them, but only leave enough cap space for two, the first two to sign at what you deemed fair market stay on the team, the last guy gets traded.

How much money do you expect Marner to get and how many points do you expect for that? Break it down into goals and assists. Then do the same for Nylander. Ballpark numbers are good. Is Mitch a 30/100 guy? Is Willy a 40/90 guy? Because there is no way in hell that's a 4 million difference.

Fans who don’t like the direction of the team also have the option of gtfo.

The fans are the very foundation of what makes the Toronto Maple Leafs the Toronto Maple Leafs. Without them, in whatever disgruntled, paying form they come in, whatever opinion they have, the Leafs would be just another random franchise in a moderately uncool sport.
