I hope he finishes a check tonight. Goes to the dirty areas. Gets some pucks in deep. Get a goal and an assist so this thread can disappear for a while.

But yeah historically speaking the Toronto market seems to be more comfortable cheering for the two way, grit grind than dominant skill display. Just one of those weird things I guess.

If you put up a vote for greatest all time Leafs, I bet Gilmour and Clarke are higher on the list than Matthews and Marner.

This isn't a good series for Willie. He absolutely can be intimidated off the puck very easily. Which is my biggest gripe with him. Those corners and his unwillingness to dive into them.
Wait until the series is over, you might end up being surprised. He was our most dangerous forward in game 1 so I don't see any reason to think like this ATM. Marner on the other hand wasn't great in game 1 (to put it mildly) so if you're thinking someone needs to get his ass in gear, maybe switch your focus to him. JMHO.

Not sure how you measure effort, are there advance stats for that?

Nylander's a player who often doesn't appear to be putting the effort, but that appearance is misleading. Sundin was another guy like that.

Bottom line, Nylander has been overall good in the playoffs and he looked like perhaps our best player in game one.

Agree to disagree.

Interesting thought. Two completely different players but I do think 9.5 is about what Nylander will get on his next contract, we'll see.

If the puck is available, the player has to make an effort to get it before anyone else.
If an opponent is open for a hit, deliver the hit.
If an opponent has a clean shot, try to prevent the shot, modify the shot, block it, or otherwise interfere with the shot.

That's how you measure effort in the playoffs.

Nobody gets a free chance to do whatever the hell it is:

Shoot, pass, skate, whatever it is.

Mats was a 2 way centre. If he wasn't scoring, he was taking important draws, he was expected to match up against the other top players and/or top defensive pairings and free up space and time for the other lines.

Nylander has none of those responsibilities.

Mats also took the body, and in the playoffs he was a monster to take the puck off of.
Remember the year we lost to Carolina, he went down with what should have been a season ending injury, but was back way early.

Mats always pushed through physical discomfort.

Willie has never been one to do that.

Matthews' season last year is better than the 127 point season.

However, if you made a poll of Nylander vs Tucker, it would be damn near unanimous.

Same with Roberts.

I have to say, I don't understand you guys freaking out saying Nylander has to be better and he's not trying and all that crap. WTF are you watching when the game is on anyway?

I'll just leave you with this - from game 1 against Florida.

I want all 18 skaters to put in their full effort in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Maybe you don't expect that, but I do.

And Nylander at full effort is a game changer.

He hasn't been anywhere near 100 % effort yet.
This. And actually nothing more.

Effort is great, who doesn't like effort? That said, you don't get points for effort in the NHL, you get paid to win. So not "nothing more", a lot more.

Not sure where these idiotic narratives get started but the idea that Nylander wasn't putting in the effort last game is a joke. You're Marner's biggest fan boy, compared to him, Nylander was absolutely flying out there, why don't we hear a peep out of you about Marner?

Oh that's right, you'd love to criticize Marner but hey, his thread is an "appreciation" thread.:laugh:

Ignore number 2.

Expecting Nylander to bounce back, he hears the criticism and usually responds.

That never occurred to me but seems like a pretty good comparison.

Kessel never lacked for effort in the playoffs.

Kessel lacked any semblance of skill around him.
That was biggest flaw as a player.

As an illustration of what I have been saying about Nylander, watch this backcheck and explain why Nylander would just stop taking strides at the top of the hash marks instead of driving hard to break up a possible scoring chance against.

This is the play I talk about when I say:

Nylander needs to keep moving his feet. When he does, he's amazing, when he doesn't, he's a huge liability.

This is his location on the ice at the time of his last stride:

And all of a sudden, Nylander has become the most dangerous Leaf on offense.

The only thing he's done different from the last 6 minutes played to the other 30 minutes?

Started skating harder and moving his feet constantly.
That allows him to get to loose pucks quicker and to move around.

Incredible that.
Wonder if anyone has ever mentioned it to the kid.

Unreal tonight. Best leaf on the ice. Do not understand why he isn't on the PP

For all the good Nylander did tonight carrying the puck and creating chances, it's the casual trip up leading to Florida scoring to start the second that sort of ruined everything else. You can't dig yourself that big of a hole only to go hero mode and try all night to score. You're almost better off playing quiet and doing nothing than causing such a momentum shift. He's always good and always bad.

I agree. Bad turnover. Horrible goal against though.

That being said, he set up 91 for a hat trick, and he didn't get any.

But he needs to be this engaged all the time.

We are definetly too careless with the puck. McCabe lost us game 1 this way.

88 and 34 turnovers cost us tonight.

Too sloppy. Should try and grind it out rather than play this loose style Flo wants.

There is a reason why Nylander isn’t on the ice late in a game whenever we are leading
His defense sucks ass
Willy has bailed from hits too many times

He will be gone this summer
Which doesn't relate to anything I said, but ok, you're entitled to your opinion.

You're blaming Willy for being tripped while trying to make up for someone else's mistake?

His lame little attempt at a stick on Barkov’s passing lane wasn’t exactly Selke caliber. But again. Pretty much par for course compared to the Matthews line on the Forsling goal.

At the end of the day, all that flash and dash in the attempted comeback was fine. But if he’s not scoring real goals for us it doesn’t really make up for the other junk.
