William Nylander expected to be traded after Toronto's decision leaves him unable to play more hockey

William Nylander can be a polarizing figure for Toronto Maple Leafs fans. Nylander possesses elite talent that he can seemingly turn on at a moments notice. However it's his compete level that drives coaches and fans absolutely crazy at times. One thing you can say about Nylander is that he doesn't love the game. Nylander does everything possible to play as much hockey as possible. As soon as the Maple Leafs season ended, Nylander made it clear that he wanted to immediately join Team Sweden at the World Hockey Championships.

Nylander was expected to join fellow teammate Timothy Liljegren for the tournament. Surprisingly Liljegren arrived, but Nylander never followed. Some assumed it could be a delay in paperwork, but that is clearly not the case. Today Gord Miller of TSN reported the following information:

Reports from Sweden state Nylander had received a request to join the team and had accepted the invite. However, it now appears the Maple Leafs may have shutdown Nylander's request. This likely because the team intends to trade him this offseason and if he's injured that becomes an issue. Especially with his no trade clause set to kick in on July 1st.

I would trade him solely because I think he over-performed this season and has a higher value that he may have had a year ago or a year from now.

Build around Knies, Robertson, Matthews, and the blue chip prospects you get back in Marner and Nylander trades. Then make this pitch to McDavid:

Knies Matthews Quinn
Robertson _______ Guenther

(just as an example)

This seems like unlikely speculation. They've literally just changed GMs a few hours ago, I doubt interim GM Pridham decided to trade Willy ASAP in that time frame. And we don't even know who the next long term GM will be and what his views on Nylander/the core will be...

They’re speculating that the Leafs told him he couldn’t play?

It's probably provisional. Why would you risk the guy at this point when they don't have a contract sorted. They had no choice but to do this.

Tough to say he overperformed when he doesn't get anywhere close to the powerplay time Marner and Matthews get. He definitely has issues with consistency and defensive play though.

Game 6 vs Tampa.

He was actually huge in the Tampa series.

No Bueno in Florida

His play dropped off in game 3 when he got hit with a flying puck to the hand. He was in noticeable pain and that's when his 12 game point streak in the playoffs ended and he didn't record another point and looked basically useless offensively.

i also wonder - double standard?
first thing when nylander does not go to the sc's --- he's being traded

nary a word on why marner or jt are not there for canada or matthews for the states

are folks really that anxious to move him?

Don’t teams usually save a spot for late arrivers?
Yeah they sent two guys home because of him and Liljegren, so now there is one spot left but he is not coming so..
His brother has been benched so maybe that fits the narrative above, but seems like a stretch to me.

Who knows? I imagine the Team itself wishes he were there. He certainly improves their chances to win.

His brother has been benched since he sucks and don't backcheck.. He is a lazy f**k who thinks name and talent alone will get him ice time.
If William think a coach should play the players who don't follow the gameplan and therefore stay home and sulk in Toronto, that's up to him.

However, I don't think this is the reason why he is not coming, Toronto don't want him injured if they are getting ready to trade him seems a much more likely choice.

It’s not that serious man lol. He’s done it all at the world championship. Just wants his bro to play. Not a bad thing.
