Did everyone bending over for Nylander rn seriously miss him ducking Gudas in OT leading to a giveaway and scoring chance against?

If I could sum up the core 4's mentality in one play, that'd be it.

You are allowed to make some bad plays when you make the better play most of the time. Nylander crushed the playoffs and was by far the best of the 4, he can duck out of whatever he wants because he is still a net positive. Marner? Matthews? JT? Maybe not since not only did they make mistakes, they didn't do much on the positive side in the 2nd round.

He showed a lot of heart too and made quite a few plays while his richer teammates were out for a stroll

he was -4

LAST on the team in blocked shots and hits for the playoffs, worst plus minus for forwards despite most sheltered zone time.

Great goal last night, liked his effort, proved a spark, but people here are mostly biased fanboys. Perhaps it’s why he’s so controversial.

He’s up and down for me and overall I didn’t like his playoffs.

I keep saying it too.. don’t understand the love.

The 5 minutes he plays well once in a while really stands out because Nylander can drive through the opposition like no one else on the team. It’s exciting and people remember it. But if you step back a moment it is very frustrating because he is so inconsistent. Half the time he looks like he’s out there for a warm up skate. At this point he is what he is.. a Kessel, Mogilny, Kovalev type.

A 100 ft, soft, inconsistent, uninterested, and occasionally super talented offensive player.

He showed a lot of heart??? By avoiding every hit and staying in perepheric almost all game long? Didn't block a single shot of the serie...

We certainly dont have the same definition of showing heart...

The fact he scored a goal game 4 after a lucky bounce and missing his shot right on the post and an other one gm 5 from peripheric, its not whats making nylander playing with heart.

Firgot the stats, Hes the guy who played with lowest level of intensity and commitment...skating hard only when he having free space in front of him

At least WN enjoys the game. AM has a serious life issue facing him, and Mitchy needs to become just Mitch, become a man, which seems unlikely. Patrick Cane with similar size and skill had to grow up...and did, but MM seems unable to play hard enough because of fear.
Willie, gotta love his skill and smile. He is who he is, the other two are frauds.

Even with all that, he's the guy who shows up in the playoffs more then the other 3.

I think that is the narrative, but I think that is a false narrative.

It is just the few times that he does show up are noticeable.
It's not a false narrative. It's not even close who has shown up more in the playoffs.
Even if your last point was true, thats still much more then the other 3 have done.

Here is my take on Willy. I am not a super big fan of his but for round 2 he was the Leaf forward that put in the most effort. Now much of that effort was still spent around the outside and avoiding hits but the one time……the one time he did go do the net he score. Should that not be telling the other lazy 3 that go to the dam net if you want to make something happen.
it was so frustrating watching especially Matthews just circle around in his own end waiting for a breakout pass and letting every one else do the work. I don’t know if he actually won a single puck battle in game 5 because he was only in like three of them

Pretty bad when the guy who floated until the 3rd period of game #2 "was the Leaf forward that put in the most effort." in the series. Let's run it back !!!

He definitely isn't going to fundamentally change his game -the thing though is players like that can still be essential for a teams post season success (case and point, Kessel).

David Clarkson played with more heart than anybody every second he was on the ice - but he he was never going to lead a team anywhere

It is very sad and the reason so many people in leaf land are so, pissed at these guys.
this is one of the least likeable groups in my 40 something years of being a leaf fan

Isn't it though?

If Willy has shown up so much more, where are the results?

Nylander has 40 points in 50 playoff games and 25 in the past 25 games. Marner, who appears to be everyone's current favourite hate, has 46 points in those same 50 playoff games, and 26 points in the past 25 games.

Sorry, not buying it..

You can make the case that Nylander makes less, which doesn't actually matter in this particular argument of who showed up more, or maybe linemates or PP time this playoffs? But the counter arguments for Marner would be that he is in a completely different league defensively and has more responsibility as an important PK player.

If only Marner makes as much as Nylander. Someone was joking that at one point Marner had more playoff delay-of-game penalties than he had goals.
