Keefe today was saying when Willie is on you just throw him over the boards, but then alluded to what he’s been of late and not feeling comfortable with his play, sheltering him. I noticed last game Keefe was actually skipping over his line in the rotation, which is pretty bad, so hopefully with a new line he finds his form. With his talent, he will always be dangerous, it’s a question of him being a liability at times and Keefe seems to see it too, so I’m not sure it’s really debatable. I want to see first 2/3 of season Bill, hunting pucks and winning battles to get out of our end. We’re almost unstoppable should that version re-emerge, he’s a game breaker.
Was a game breaker last game… lol

Tied with Mathews both are tied for 6th in scoring, I can’t believe you guys want more. OMG!
I love Willy and know he shows up when it counts and has a knack for big moments.

I do understand some people's frustration with him though.

He has been on the ice for the most goals against as a forward with 7, although he has been on for 6 for.

The thing for me is that it is 7 years in. This is who Willy is. He gets paid considerbly less than the rest of the core but produces almost as much.

The gap in pay is fair as he is not as good as a 200ft player. I don't really think Tavares is as well.

But when Willy is on the ice, I always believe there is a chance he can do something special.

What's not been good, and what he's been skipping over, is the Tavares line.

As soon as he's not stuck with JT, he's been one of the best players.

At least two on those 'goals against' have been a result of a line change. In Monday's game (for example), Nylander, Jarnkrok, Matthews, Holl, and Gio had barely stepped on the ice in place of Marner, Knies, Tavares, Rielly, and Schenn when a great pass from Sergachev led to the 4th goal.

I'm not sure that's being sheltered. When you get an O-zone start you want to put your best offensive players out there.

If he's leading the team in shots, and right up there in chances, despite playing with the wrong linemates, what's the gripe?

I swear there are people here who wouldn't have wanted Gretzky in his prime, because he didn't run opposing players enough.
I completely agree with your assessment.

He was floating around and hemmed in routinely. I’ve praised the guy all year, not sure why you’re not allowed to notice things. That defensive effort won’t get it done, and that’s why he was sheltered, highest o zone starts. He did make some plays for sure, but his lack of desire defensively at times is indefensible for me and no man crush attack dogs can change that. Total commitment is all I ask.
I saw him skate the puck into the O zone twice in a row he may have done it more. I also saw the pass back by others time and again not being able to break in.

Nylanders obviously never going to be a Selke nominee but it's very obvious that he and JT just don't have any sort of defensive chemistry with one another - which imo is mostly a coaching issue by keeping them together.

JT needs Marner more than Matthews does

Nylander just isn't capable of babysitting JT like Marner is, I think it's more of a JT problem than the wingers

We're talking about having to use one of the best defensive wingers in the game to make the Tavares line usable

It's a serious problem when we don't have last change

Nylander doesn't have any chemistry with Matthews either.

Strange, maybe they could try him on the 3rd line with God knows who.

Nylander did not help us win or loose this game.
If Nylander should be good enough to play with Tavares even if they dont click.. Then Matthews should be good enough to play with Nylander. They have not played together since... i dont know... so if they get a new chance who knows.

Put Nylander where he helps the team. ROR Nylander and Knies. Looked good before.
Matthews Marner Bunting will draw the tough minutes among Tampas D. Tavares can play an opportunistic game with Kerfoot and Jarnkrok.
Let the ROR line feast with some space. You do this by putting the Tavares line between the Matthews and ROR line. Tampas top D can't cover 3 shifts nor can they jump on every 2.

When Nylander struggled in the end of the season i wanted him to play a few games with Matthews. !To be ready for plan B coming playoffs( Plan b Matthews with Nylander) But as this has developed i think u are right, we might need plan C . I always liked the idea of ROR with Nylander. I dont think they will feast , but i got a feeling they complement each other better then Nylander/Tavares or Nylander/Matthews. Well see... i say as if Keefe will try this. Got no clue what he will try.

It's not about where he will play best. It's about finding a way to boost as many good players as possible. ROR's line was getting caved. I really don't care if you put Marner or Nylander there but Nylander ROR and Knies looked good. Willy provide a snipe when the other 2 are digging the puck from the wall. Willy also gets pretty good complementary speed to do his thing. Knies can skate.
JT needs to anchor a line without trying up top scorers. Kerfoot and Jarnkrok should provide the defensive support he needs.

I'd replace Jarnkrok with Bunting but yeah. JT kills the offence of whoever is on his line. He's slow and prone to tunnel vision. Jarnkrok works well with Matthews.

Problem is that Bunting is limited defensively and would fit less perfectly on the lower lines. If Matthews and Marner are together, they have d chops covered. If Willy is with Matthews, then I would agree that Jarnkrok is a better choice because you don't want Matthews carrying the defensive burdens himself. It would be a waste.

He was embarrassing in our end, 100 feet of desire.
He is not supposed to be in our end.
He is supposed to get a pass from D and transport the puck to the Ozone. But first u need that first pass. When did he screw up? (could not see the full game ).
