Didn’t realize life was over at 32. Also have no interest in paying a 4th forward on this team 9-10 mil. Cause that’s just worked out sooooo well to date. You could get 2-3 guys for that price and/or maybe a quality 25-30 minute a night D.

If they fail again get more for 2 years of marner than 1 year of Nylander.

And be able to almost pay for 2 top 6 players for his cap hit.

Dougie Dougie where are you?

We will see what happens. I’m not saying you have to do anything but trying to win a playoff round every 7 years is not a ringing endorsement of this team is built for the playoffs. Other teams have altered, Florida did, you have to see what kind of team you are and aren’t. You have to see where everyone is very soon as UFA vs. dollars, cap and success.

If the Leafs win, wouldn't the probability of winning with 10+ MM forwards on your team now move to 25%. Seems to me the Leafs are a cup away from proving this shit is nonsense. Wouldn't hang my hat on this nugget of wisdom because by this logic, it should become a league trend.

Dougie was something like 29 years old when he came to the team. We stole him because some idiot on another team thought similarly.

i read through threads like these and wonder where all the long term logic is
why is there a thread on what to do with willie?

any realistic look at the future has to be "what do we do with matthews, marner, nylander"
decisions on all 3 NEED to be made before july 1 this year

willie has a m-ntc kicking in, auston and mitch have full nmc

nylander can be moved anytime actually, the other 2 cannot

whether it is shanahan/dubas or someone else these decisions have to be made. and made soon

this should not be a willie vs mitch ... or a mitch vs auston .. or whatever argument

the decision needs to be based on what are the projected salaries, the projected cap AND what is best for the toronto maple leafs ... not "how can my favourite player be protected" which is what much of the talk is here

i have watched my favourite players get moved in the past from frank mahovlich, errol thompson to darryl sittler .. it may happen again
i watched them be chased out of town - davey keon

funny how people project willie's salary and say it will handcuff us, BUT no mention of the handcuff that a huge deal for auston or mitch may ...

tough decisions for sure ... and management better have an idea what all 3 are thinking before they make a decision on any one of the individuals

do what is best for the team ...period

Have to say his current contract was a hard bargain by his agent but in the end both sides got great value. A true win-win.

Yep, and blazed across the sky for 2 years. Best years for the Leafs since expansion.

Traded in his 6th. season, but the light had diminished by then.

Best 2 years since the last Cup.

Each and every player is a rental.
Some a few months, some a few years.

Centers are more important than wingers.

Matthews, Tavares > Marner, Nylander

I'll take O'Reilly over Nylander

Choice is obvious. Convince ROR to stay, move Nylander for best possible return, fill Nylander hole with those assets + ufa.

If I could get Helle out of Winnipeg and RoR for Nylander's cap hit plus whatever other space they will have, I'd jump all over that.

I was very dissapointed in Wild bill this series :(

The numbers are there: 6-2-5-7, but then you look deeper and see his goals came in games 1 and 2, both blowouts, and yeah ok he was huge in game four (2 assists in the 3rd and on the OT winner) but he did Nathan tonight or game five.

He was also invisible against Tampa last year in G7.

Less passivity and more activity, Willy - you can wait a few months to bang Swedish supermodels, they aren’t going anywhere, in fact new ones are showing up every day.

7 points in 6 games.

3 assists plus drawing the key penalty on the It Was 4 to 1 comeback classic.

Big assist on the OReilly GTG.

The best player on the PP for zone entries, which the PP struggled to do this series.

Was he perfect? No. But without him I don't think the Leafs would have won.

What do we do with Nylander? Stop trashing him all the time and let him breathe.

Coming from the guy that goes on the main boards to post that Marner is perimeter oriented. I want Nylander on this team but you are hardly one to call for anyone to stop trashing

hes got to be better against florida,
i dont think its debatable that this was probably his worst playoff series in his career. points be damned he was hot garbage

Nylander was good in games 1 & 2, horrible in game 3, and inconsistent in 4, 5, and 6. Did deliver some clutch moments though. A little snake bitten goal-scoring wise but he’s gotta remember to play like a star even when the puck’s not going in.

Hoping for a big series from him starting tomorrow!!

I don't there's really a wrong course of action, as long as whatever we decide is done well.
Re-sign for a reasonable amount - cool.
Trade for a good return and spend UFA dollars wisely- cool.

Everyone knows why we got Killer? and it was not a hockey thing at all .. i don't want to get into it because we are all better off thinking of Killer on da hockey side not his personal demons, business relationships or women relationships .. there are many many good reasons why Killer can't take a mgmt role

I need someone to forecast the cap forward, because I don't really see a problem. They just have to cut some corners until Tavares comes off. That is the year after.

It is a one year issue but you got Woll as your back up that year, and Knies still on his rookie contract. Brodie and Muzzin also both comes off the books the year Matthews and Nylander hit FA.

The team has been in worse cap crunches than this.

Yep Basically there's one potentially tight year during Tavares final year on his current contract, which can be offset with some ELCs (especially true if we get a 1-2 more Marlies grads, which should happen). Then it's pretty smooth sailing after 2026
