I give him a C+ for the series. Couple early moments in the series, but his line had to be sheltered they were so bad defensively and eventually mixed up. He was 100 feet of desire, I was really disappointed in his passive defensive play in our zone. All the analysts saw it too, even some guys who normally sing his praises. Star players with his talent will always pot a goal, make a rush, have moments, but I don’t excuse garbage D and for me he was easily our worst forward in that regard. Here’s hoping he finds that form he had mid season, that was the best Nylander I’ve seen, and I note never a criticism, because he was hustling everywhere. We need this guy, new series, new possibilities.

Yep Basically there's one potentially tight year during Tavares final year on his current contract, which can be offset with some ELCs (especially true if we get a 1-2 more Marlies grads, which should happen). Then it's pretty smooth sailing after 2026

The actually relevant question is who we’re spending Brodie’s money on imo, we don’t have a safe plug and play minute eater coming up after Liljegren.

Quite possibly Brodie if he wants to return and still has gas left in the tank

Ice should open up a bit for him in the next series but he needs to tighten up his defensive game. Panthers are a run and gun team. Stifle their rushes and counter with speed from guys like Willy, without blowing the zone.

Put him on the O'Reilly line. Similar to Florida putting Reinhart on line #3.

Knies Matthews Marner
Nylander O'Reilly Acciari
Bunting Tavares Jarnkrok
ZAR Kampf Kerfoot

Nylander is gonna be a lot better vs Florida.

He was Jekyll and Hyde vs Tampa, defensively atrocious but we also don't win that series without his offense.

Tampa did a great job of bottling up Toronto's transition game which is Nylander's forte. Vs Florida last night they were willing to conceded transition chances as their dmen were very aggressive on the forecheck. Didn't score but Nylander was really dangerous all night. I think he'll have a much better series due to that.

Last year pulls up going into the corner. Last night, has clear path to the net and skates away. The guy is a lover, not a fighter. Lovers do not win you a SC.
If he had a clear path to the net, how does toughness factor in at all? He's obviously not afraid of open space, that doesn't make any sense

He's such a bizarre hockey player. He willingly plunges into the opposition stacked 5 deep at the blue line and carves them like a cake several times per game. No fear of someone stepping up and Trouba on Meier-ing him.

But a contested lane, 50/50 one on one to cut to the net- nooooo thank-you, not enough room.

Nylander can be the deciding factor in this series but will he? I doubt it.

Nylander continues to prove he is hard to play with, struggles to find chemistry with his linemates due to checking out mentally on both sides of the puck. His line is playing 4.5 v 5, almost a powerplay feel for the other team.

Given the last 3 games, what do you think now?

He is performing up to his pay. I don't like the deployment that Keefe is using in general and feel it's actually hindering us in these series. When it's desperation hockey Nylander is on beat.

You?

Can anyone imagine Nylander with the on ice effort of Kerfoot?

He would be a 40-60-100 player every year.

Has by a good margin the best skating on the team.
Has the 2nd best shot on the team.
Has nearly the same kind of play making ability of Marner.
Is bigger and stronger than Marner.

The technical and physical attributes are all there for a superstar player.

If only someone could unlock in him.
I'm afraid he's more like his Dad then most people know. Micheal was known as The Swedish Gretzky and the moniker was real, the problem was you'd only see it out of him occasionally. It wasn't only coaches who got frustrated with him, but it was his teammates as well. It makes it tough in the dressing room when resentments start.

I'm not saying it's what is happening here, maybe Will is hurt or something but the last couple of games v the Lightning and last night v the Panthers, while other guys are taking punishment to make plays Will is kind of gliding around and mostly somehow disinterested.

What do you do with him?

Q: What do we do with Nylander?
A: Kindly remind him that he's playing in the 2nd round of the playoffs and not to shy away from physical contact.

He is what he is.
Good out weighs the bad, IMO.

This place really has it out for Nylander. The guy has to be 10/10 every second of his life not to get called out. Even when he scores so much the past few years, he's the only Leaf who isn't allowed to even take 1 second off. I don't know if I like Nylander so much because of himself, or because of the need to always have defend him to toronto fans.

We'd be down 1-2 in the series if the puck didn't get to Nylander down low. Slowly and calmly kept his head up and read the play in front of the net for them to crash it home.
Of course he's allowed, it's just that our Will takes more time off and is also the Leaf least likeliest to engage, especially when the going gets tough.
