Speculation: Nylander Discussion - Part IV

If the right thing is earning less, making a lesser legacy and destroying lifetime earning potential so he can earn the same amount (if he actually hustled to get endorsements) or even less, than yeah do the right thing and get traded out of Hockey mecca to an irrelevant market.
There are plenty of other good markets, Toronto isn't the only one. Hard to believe, I know, but it's true.

Ya you’re right, what am I thinking. What happened in 2006 is definitely relevant now. Surprised 9 year old Matthews and 16 year old JT didn’t carry them to the finals.
Same team choked last 2 yearz. If u ignore the hype what results do they have to show there a contender lol. They have nothing of note except some chokes.

The Ehlers deal adjusted for inflation would add a couple hundred thousand to it....so lets say 6.3. I think the Leafs and every fan would be over the moon with that deal....hell I have a feeling if they were even close they could bridge that gap and if it ended at 6.5 long term that is fair but the longer this plays out in my opinion the more credence there is in him asking for 8+ a year. Which in that scenario there is just not a single way you look at what Nylander has done so far and make an argument for him being worth that much.

Like I stated I'm traveling on cell only, can't confirm. But we're saying the samething. 6.3 cap inflation, plus playing x games as centre, x hundreds of face offs taken, centre potentially, first two years better......to me it falls between 6.5 - 7.0.........not a cent more. As stated 8.5 million is crazy talk.

You literally can't have a discussion without taking a shot at the Oilers, eh? No Oiler fan has Bouchard pencilled in as our #1 D-man. Grow up.
To be fair, he will eventually be your #1, and he'll be a good one at that.

I stated first two years......that's not even debatable.
Yes it is. Ehlers started in NHL 1st year and Nylander in ahl . So Ehlers numbers ppg might may be down in 1st year but that was because he cut his teeth in NHL not ahl. These 2 are dead even in every way. How is someone playing in NHL not equal to someone else playing in ahl.

Something has to give. You cannot tell me the other teams in this league are unwilling to offer sheet this guy. If you're a team like LA, why don't you offer him $8M a year? If that's what he wants, and the Leafs only want to give him $6M, why can't you offer sheet him? You're only losing a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. If you're a playoff team, losing those picks don't hurt you, because you're acquiring a player that will most likely out play what your late first, 2nd, and 3rd round picks give you.

Do you want your team to give up all of that for the likes of Nylander?

Because other teams don’t want to start making ridiculous contract offers because they also have their own players to sign as well. If they start throwing money on other teams players, their own players are going to want more as well and put themselves in Toronto’s shoes. You can’t just start upping the bar on players. Especially other teams players.

I want him to get offersheeted just for the drama. I remember Feastergate and that was absolutely hilarious. :biglaugh:

Lol. That team wasn’t even expected to make the playoffs and played solid against the best team Washington. Last year they went to game 7 against Boston and maybe choked the last few periods. This is a young team.

I disagree with respect to Ehlers. Nylander has been more prolific at the international stage and I think has more upside.

Pasta I agree with as a comparable and someone I agree with in terms of value at time of signing,. His $6.66M x 6 years deal equates to 8.89% of the cap. So in today's dollars, that's $7.1M.

So based on the Pasta deal, Nylander for 6 years @ $7.1M. Certainly fair based on that comparable. Though if Toronto wants a 7 or 8 year deal the cap **** should expected to be higher.

Sorry. I’m a leafs fan. But Nylander is not as good as Pasta. I compare him to Ehlers. I think 6.5 is fair for 6 years

LA can do $8.1 over 5 years if they wanted. Any more term and they would have to pay four 1st's. Problem is Nylander has said time and time again he wants a long term contract and wants to stay in Toronto.

or signs in SHL, or signs an OS with another team to force Toronto to up the price or lose him for measly picks.

Would love to see Nylander sign a one year deal in SHL or an offersheet to put the "no leverage" talk to bed. He's got the ability to sign with any other NHL team willing offersheet him, or play in a different league, of course he has leverage.

You keep posting illogical things in this thread.

From what I can see SHL salaries usually top out at around 250K USD. Are you saying Nylander is willing to play for 6.25M less money this year to spite Toronto? How does that make sense for him or us?

Offer sheets are largely irrelevant to this scenario too. If Nylander signed a fair OS from someone else we would match, if some team went stupid and gave him his 8.5M we would happily take all their first round draft picks as compensation

To offer someone a contract you need to have cap space. The LA Kings have less than 1M in cap space, how are they going to offer Nylander 8m?

The paradox of the offersheet is that usually good teams have less cap space, meaning only bad teams (with valuable draft picks) could make such an offer.
