That million might be why they have to throw in picks for retention on a trade. When JTs deal is gone and the cap has gone up that means that todays $5M players are looking for $7M. You never get caught up, and especially not when second tier stars also want the growing cap to be their inflation adjustment. The team needs high value contracts to assemble the strongest possible lineup. Nobody else feels the a cluster of 8 figure stars at the top of the lineup is how you build a champion.I guess I don't see a huge difference the 1 million could make. If he brings value at 9, doesn't make sense to me to lose him at 10.
Look at the NHL caliber defensemen the team has locked up for 24-25. They will be spending big because they have only Lilly to show for every draft since Rielly.
