I guess I don't see a huge difference the 1 million could make. If he brings value at 9, doesn't make sense to me to lose him at 10.
That million might be why they have to throw in picks for retention on a trade. When JTs deal is gone and the cap has gone up that means that todays $5M players are looking for $7M. You never get caught up, and especially not when second tier stars also want the growing cap to be their inflation adjustment. The team needs high value contracts to assemble the strongest possible lineup. Nobody else feels the a cluster of 8 figure stars at the top of the lineup is how you build a champion.

Look at the NHL caliber defensemen the team has locked up for 24-25. They will be spending big because they have only Lilly to show for every draft since Rielly.

Willie fans are saying the price is rising after a sample of 5 games and 9 points. Is that large enough sample?? Of course not. I said give it 40 games and if he is pacng for 100 points, give him his money.

Forget Mtch. Apparently he starts to light it up in November. LOL.

Debrincat has 2 40 goal seasons. More goals in 70 fewer games. Willie has more points in 70 more games. As for money, Debrincat was making less than Willie until he signed with Detroit after he was acquired this summer. Willie will surpass him next year by millions most likely.

We agree that a few games into the season isn't a good time to look at stats!

Looking at the same number of seasons their points are similar. He seems to have gotten off to a faster start, maybe because he was in a weaker team.

He's a couple of years younger, so their contracts are likely to play leapfrog - Willy will get more starting in '25, and DeBrincat more starting in '28.

But yes, our top players seem to get overpaid compared to the rest of the league: thank you, Dubas!

Yea every dollar counts, no one would deny that.
Wasn’t really the point though.

Actually, they have a couple who will be entering the make-it or bust next year. Kokkonen, Niemela, Benoit is RFA making minimum, Brodie won't be worth $5mm.

People should be more positive, prospects do develop, players do get promoted, and sometimes teams are just impatient with their assets. Dollars to doughnuts Durzi isn't good enough for the NHL if he hadn't been traded ...

They'll find the money.

They'll pay him more than he deserves just like Matthews and Marner and then tell us with a straight face that they're trying to win.

As one of the talking heads said, his interviews are so relaxed.

He probably was too relaxed up until this season so was his play. Little too relaxed, needed more intensity. If he drop like got shot on a check again I am personally fining him 1Million Dollars payable to me.

still cannot believe that Nonis managed to avoid not drafting him

Because NONIS. They compared him to a Potato and the Potato was deemed to hypothetically be a better GM.

He essentially got no return for expiring contracts ever. He just let everyone walk and I just hope if they cant get a deal done with WN, well they have to get that done.

Take this with a grain of salt because I can't figure out what the NHL considers a hit sometimes but Nylander according to NHL.com has throw more hits this year than Knies.

He also has only 1 giveaway this year which is remarkable considering how often he has the puck
