What is your limit for a "Cap %" for Nylander

Haven't caught a lot of news on the negotiations over the past couple weeks, but really disappointing that we couldn't get a deal done with him before the season started. I don't see any way for it to not be a distraction. Media will make sure it is.

Hope Treliving knows what he's doing. Can't be letting Nylander walk.

I think it will get it done by Xmas. If not the ASG. just don’t see what’s the hold up beside the price. Think the price is really 250-500k. Not like BT got a long list of UFAs and RFAs to sign at this point.

The whole idea of a contract being a distraction is a red herring. Has it distracted them so far? When the team has a rough stretch and loses two or three games, do you think the fact that Nylander doesn't have a contract will make the whole season go off the rails? You are creating a boogeyman that doesn't exist.

Most will say Marner but I agree with this. Nylander can do it all where Marner basically can only make nice passes and defend somewhat well.

It helps not be a distraction knowing that Tree and Lewis Gross will be able to hash it out during the season. None of this “I won’t negotiate during the season” nonsense we sometimes see from players. Knowing that one random day the news can drop that he’s re-signed is a nice thought to have in the back of your mind.

Neither of which will be the case. They will have a playoff spot basically locked down by US Thanksgiving, and probably the division by early in the new year. I think most people are underestimating how much worse the rest of the division has become.

One finesse+power move goal and one snipe.

Showed at least 4 different game paces last night. Moved around the o-zone with ease at less than half his speed. Agility and stick handling alone carries him around.

Audition is over just pay the man.

Willy is the second best forward on this team
 
Need to get him signed, even if the team takes a step back next year to soak the final year of Tavares' contract it's going to be worth it in the end. It's early this year, but something just looks a little bit different with Matthews Marner Nylander, feels like they've truly grown into three-headed monster we thought they would become years ago. I mean Matthews isn't going to be potting 3 every game don't get me wrong, but these three are easily good enough to carry a team's offense.

Tavares has had a good start to the season too though, especially because he's been playing support while letting Nylander completely drive the play... which is definitely how we want that line to play, let's hope it continues.

I've had similar thoughts but only in fleeting moments. It's only been 2 games and we've seen this offence shoot blanks in the biggest playoff games too many times so I'm not going to get my hopes up too high. Just going to take it one game at a time, enjoy the fireworks when they happen, hope Nylander is extended soon and not think about it too much beyond that.

Exactly, with Brodie & Klingberg expiring this year, Tavares next, just give him 10 or as close to it and get it done. Will be worth every penny.
 
I believe we may see a 50 goals from Willy this season. He is just so strong on the puck. He controls the ice when he has puck, he skates circles around everyone.

Treliving absolutely has to sign this guy. There is no scenario where you let him walk. I don’t care if you have to buy out Tavares or put him on waivers or whatever you have to do. Willy is one of the best players in the league and needs to be extended.

What’s crazy is all 3 of them, Matthews, Nylander and Marner have the potential to be the best player on the ice at any given moment. We’ve seen games from Marner where he has 2 goals, 5 assists and killing penalties. Nylander can score at will from all angles, Matthews can completely take over games from a physicality stand point and also score. My hope is they all fire on all cylinders at the same time and bring this drive for the playoffs.

Something is completely different about this team. They seem hungry and engaged. The culture around the team has definitely changed organizationally.

I fully understand that. I am just trying to stress how critical it is that Toronto gets Willy extended. At the end of the day if we do lose him, it is because of Tavares‘ $11M aav. Treliving has to tell him that we need you to waive your no trade or something.

elite players with the skill set like Willys are far and few around the league.

It’s not because of Tavares $11aav. We could fit both under next years cap.

If Willy doesn’t sign it’s because he doesn’t want to be here or he got a deal we simply felt he wasn’t worth. Tavares isn’t even a factor in the Willy negotiations.

Either way I think a deal gets done cause I think he wants to be here and Shanny wants to prove that he can retain all 3 guys. So there’s incentive on all sides to get something done.

I think most people are overthinking this. Toronto will sign him. Their is no circumstance under which they will trade him or let him walk for nothing. As I have said all along, when he is signed there will be a part of the fan base who will think they overpaid, but the size of that group is dwindling. The same process will play out with Marner, except that I expect that he will sign next July as soon as he is eligible. Where the Leafs will cut on payroll is in net. It's what Dubas was right about all along. A team doesn't need to allocate big dollars to goaltending.
