HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #90: 2024-2025 season part III

We don't hear a ton about Armia - I have a feeling he wants to take a discount to stay in MTL.
Seems like a guy that doesn't like change.

It sucks to see Evans go, but he is a very solid trade chip now. Hughes should trade him for a good pick and then use that pick with others to either buy a roster player (top6C) in a subsequent deal or move up in the draft.

I'd try for a first in '26 draft. This draft is weak late first. Maybe get a late first for Armia. With the 30th pick Habs select Cole Reschny. It's even deal

2026 1st is fine but ultimately I think we should flip picks and get a surer asset that will actually address the hole at C immediately. Think the Dvorak deal, but for a good player instead hah

But with Evans and dvo leaving, we start the next season with one real centre with NHL experience? What if Beck has a hard time adjusting. They have to improve next season. I don't think that is happening without landing a quality center. If we have to overpay, so be it. I don't think there is any alternative...

Sign a UFA veteran like Duchene, Gourde or Giroux. Or both? May have to overpay but short term deal. At 35 no team offering them long term deal. Buy time until Hage, Kapanen, Beck are ready. Probably our first pick this draft also, Desnoyers, O'Brien or Bear.

You just named 2 4th liner center. I mean we can just find one on a year contract for like 2m. It's not a problem. At worst Beck can play there and learn.

Way too much

On l'Antichambre, I believe, he said he likes everything about Montreal. I don't know if they sign him to an extension (at a lower AAV) or not, but the problem is not Armia re-signing or not, it is that Anderson and Gallagher are likely both here for another two years.

Keeping Armia would leave zero spots open for a youngster to fight for at the NHL level.

I'd prefer to keep Armia over Gallagher, but nobody will take on Gallagher's contract, I'm sure.

Anderson is also playing an important role with the team, IMO.

With Demidov coming in and Dach not fitting in as a 2C, what to do, what to do, especially if Hughes finds a 2C outside of the system this offseason?

With Evans likely gone, as well as Dvorak (unless he is extended for cheap as a 3rd/4th C?

Caufield - Suzuki - Laine/Dach
Slafkovsky - 2C - Demidov
Heineman - Beck - Dach/Laine
Anderson - XXX/Dvorak - Gallagher

Where does Armia fit in if we still have Laine and Dach? Plus, Armia wouldn't be there long enough to be worthwhile once we become a playoff team with sights on a longer playoff push.

Wow. 5 million for evans. Good for him if he gets anything over 4.
Simply a result of cap inflation- $5M will be what we know presently as the $3M player.

Rantanen I can’t see signing for less than $15M AAV - with Trump tax cuts coming for top end earners including reportedly significant cuts to bonuses / stock options will be interesting to watch how this all plays out

Not sure about that + who cares - Habs will have exorbitant amount of cap space available, the issue will be attracting players in competition vs low tax US markets

Clearly not what I said, but ok. Enjoy toiling in the bottom 5 of the league for the next several years because that is where we are headed.
Yeah we will stay bottom 5 because we didn’t re-sign Jake Evans.

More likely we stay bottom 5 if we pay 4th liners $4m a year when we could have traded him for assets to actually improve the team where it needs it most.

The craziest part is that we have literally been watching his more talented replacement on an ELC play up close the last few games.

Suzuki is a first line centre, but not on a cup winning team. Ideally he’s a 2nd line centre. We need to find someone better.
You are talking in generalities. I made a list of top centers. You tell me how many of those centers are better than Suzuki and then tell me what it would take to get them. Once you do that, you step away from LaLa land and walk into the real world. BTW, I maintain there are really only about 8 centers that are truly better than Suzuki. the rest on that list are debatable.

Joni Mitchell wrote a song in which one of the lines reads you don't know what you got till it's gone. I'm positive she was looking at Habs fans and their woeful underappreciation of Suzuki. (That's a joke).

5 guys on that list have already been traded. You never know who’s available and who become availabl in the future for whatever reason.

If Habs can land a Center as good or better the. Suzuki, it would make them a better team overall than just getting a better 2nd line center. This isn’t a shit against Suzuki, just saying Habs should aim higher on improving the roster.
Maybe 5 guys on the list were traded but not of the 8 that are "superior" to Suzuki. Eichel is the only one

For Evans, i'm assuming Hughes will want something similar to what he got for Lehkonen (hopefully a prospect that works out this time). When he traded Lehkonen, he was a 26 year old winger with 13 goals and 16 assists in 58 games. His career high up to that point was 31 points in 82 games.

Evans is a 28 year old centre with 11 goals and 16 assists in 56 games. His career high so far is 29 points in 72 games.

2nd's for each of those guys seem about right.

Would be nice to move Savy but there's no need if it's a 4th. Rather just have him around the team while the young guys take his spot and get minutes.
