Islanders are going to be insanely strong this year. I think they made enough strong moves to put them in the cup conversation.

If Chara plays 44 games this season he passes Chelios for most all time by a defenseman

edit: regular season only:

Chara:
  • 1608 regular season games to date
  • 200 playoff games
Chelios:
  • Games played in the regular season by a defenseman (1,651)
  • Games played in the playoffs (266)

Chara would need to play in quiite a few long playoff runs to pass Chelios all-time for playoff games.
But if he plays another 110 TOTAL games, he passes Chelios in the Regular Season+Playoff games totals.

Kinda of funny that it's technically possible (but completely improbable) to happen this year. Would have to play a full 82 regular season games followed by four seven game series in the playoffs.

Uh no. Tampa was better. Remember the 8-0 drubbing?

And I like the Islanders but if someone is going to think this somehow tilts anything toward the NYI they haven't watched chara play.

Now he has to play 82 games?

Watch him run out of steam long before the playoffs.

Tampa was better, they won the series
The 8-0 game? Who cares the score? Its a series
Game 7 was 1-0
Lou is correct, paraphrasing , we only have to score one more than they do
Islanders failed to do that, Lou has now, with expansion and the stagnant cap, re-tooled his roster
Been able to introduce some young players and add the vets he loves on reasonable deals

Anyone who thinks the game has passed Lou by? Not paying attention. Look at his salary structure, and if he’s made an error? He’s been able to get out of his and Snow’s errors. Loves his vets, and been able to get them on short term, reasonable deals.

I guess my point is Tampa's A game is better the NYI's A game.

Does that make more sense? No disrepsect. I picked you guys 2nd in the poll to win the cup.

Chara was absolutely a liability in the playoffs last year. If he is on the ice...not good.

He is just a passenger.

I think you pair Z with Dobson and let them see the ice for 16 - 18 minutes a game against some of the opposition's slower third and fourth lines. Dobber's quickness helps with Z's - ahem - deliberateness. If you believe Pully and Pelly can give you 22-24 minutes a night, that leaves approximately 20 for Mayfield and Greene. The key is, who's your 7th dman who can legitimately spell either of the two old LDs? I think it'll be Bolduc or Salo, learning in practice and then maybe once in a while on back to backs when the team needs fresh legs to appear in game 1 or 2.

I actually think the only two dmen who see the ice on a PP are Dobson and Pulock. That cuts several minutes out of the game for all others. '
PP could be:
Pulock is out there with some combo of Lee, Barzal, Palmieri and Tito.
Dobson is out there with Brock, some combo of Bails, Parise, JGP and Wahlstrom.

PK could be:
Pelech and Mayfield followed by Pulock with either Z or Greene, depending on who is fresher.

Well Isles got deeper (and have Lee back) as TB lost depth. We'll see what happens.

It's always cool to see these near retired players stick around a little longer. I didn't think he'd hang em up this year, but part of me thought he might.

Lmao do you think he’s simply going to say “NYI was the only team that wanted me”?

Did the isles chances suddenly increase at the end of the summer? Or do you think it could be possible that he waited for other offers and nothing came?

Anyways, I’m not going to bother arguing with an isles fan about whether a 60 year old player chose NYI as their top FA destination, I’ll let you enjoy this signing :)

The funny thing about this post is......he would probably be your 2nd best Dman.

So you’re telling me Parise and the other senior citizens were also holding out for any other offer? Thanks for reminding me that Chara wasn’t the only one that waited as long as he could.

Again, a bunch of 60 year olds signing with NYI at the end of the summer after other teams have finished their FA shopping does not mean that NYI is an attractive FA destination.

I mean if you want to believe that Chara rejected offers from Tampa, Boston etc then by all means continue to live in your fantasy land.
