Confirmed with Link: [NYI/TOR] Pierre Engvall for 2024 3rd round pick

Team has Tavares, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, etc, and they lament Engvall not scoring?
Teams need to have secondary scoring. Take a look at our playoff record the last 5 or so years and you'll understand why Dubas is making so many moves.

We're not really going to turn this into a Leafs thing but I think the point is that those four are top tier scorers and most teams have one or two of them. They should be the primary and secondary scoring for the Leafs.

The issue shouldn’t be secondary scoring when you have that level of talent in the top six. It’s an utter lack of defense and goaltending. Also happen to be a roster that is overall 10 ply who needs Bunting to be the tough guy.

Engvall shouldn’t have to be a key piece on that roster.

ESG number was last year if I am remembering (what I read yesterday)
why do feel the Isles may try this guy on LW between Horvat and #13 one day next few weeks..thoughts?
I don’t think this is a steal of a deal by Lou yet, but it’s very low risk given the Isles have key fwds out right now. Didn’t cost the Isles even a 2nd rd pick.

I would like to see what Engvall can do with a center that is not Kampf, who lets face it is a black hole offensively and yet Engvall still found a way to score 12 times this year.

Isles need more speed and skill. This deal provides this. Seems to me Lou may have found a good trading partner in Dubas wanting to overcompensate on grit. Engvall was one of the few bottom 6 players that could score in their bottom 6. But what expendable.

Hopefully he will help the Isles in a more offensive role here. I also don’t find the soft tag as accurate. He’s a skill player in a big man’s body. Like a Brock Nelson. Not all big guys play like Tom Wilson so that is unfair if you ask me. Think Isles fans will like him if he can further unlock his scoring.

When you're spending 40mil on 4 forwards, any issues with insufficient scoring should always be on those 4 forwards. Engvall's center this year was Kampf, who has a career high of 26 points. In the playoff Kampf and old man Spezza were his centers. Seems odd to expect anyone to be a consistent scorer in that situation, much less to lament that they aren't when you have those 4 guys taking up about half of your cap.

I'm curious to see if Engvall can find more consistency with a center like JGP (assuming he comes back healthy in time). And even if not, if he can just improve our possession game and help us keep up with speedier teams, it still seems like a solid trade.

This may sound odd. But I would like to have seen Engvall with Barzy. For now maybe Nelson would be a good match. Both big guys that prefer a skill game to bump and grind. Yes, 12 goals playing with Kampf this year with minimal PP time. You have to like Engvall’a chances of having more offensive help on the Isles. Especially when barzal and pageau are back in.

BTW I am in Lisbon right now. trying to keep up with the trades

I can see him having success with Barzal, but I also feel like he would add more to a line that struggles in transition. I do feel like he could be good with Horvat until Barzal is healthy, though.

I would absolutely love to see Parise - Nelson - Engvall

The speed, size and hard work on that line would be fun to watch.
When barzal and Pageau come back, I think we will see lines such as

Lee - Horvat - Barzal
Engvall - Nelson - Parise
Bailey - Pageau - Palmeri
Martin - Cizikas - Fasching

Strongly suggest you try a day or 2 trip to Sintra, if you have not already. Train ride is direct and easy. Especially since parking is usually difficult… although it’s traditionally not a heavy tourist season.

Thanks, we went to Sintra, Cabo de Roca and Cacais on one of the better day tours we have been to. The town of Sintra iwas charming as well as Pena Castle views. I 100% agree. I am in a Tomar right now on the Knights Templar tour. Sipping an Cafe Americano. So far not as good the Sintra tour but interesting!

When you have a 3rd line that produces 2 goals in a 7 game series, that's a problem. Engvall has 0 goals and 3 assists in 17 playoff games. Need someone who will produce against teams as deep as Tampa.

Absolutely. Pretty much a must-see!

Oh, and, uh, yep, looking forward to seeing who Engvall is paired with.

We can give him the treatment Beauvillier is getting in Vancouver - namely a fresh start with our top guys.

If Lou doesn't make any more deals, this thread is going to be 30 pages by tomorrow.

This is a great signing. A steal actually when you think you have acquired a young serviceable bottom sixes for a 3rd round pick most of whom don't make it to the NHL anyway. The Isles have acquired a puck carrier to help with their transition game. Don't mind if he's Nelson soft. I like that he's built like a tank and as far as I can tell he hasn't had any significant injuries in his young career thus far. So if or when the Isles make the playoffs he's going to be a durable player. Good pickup.

I too am a fan, I really didn't want to add a guy because I wanted to keep as many assets as possible but I think the injuries are overwhelming at this point and the boys have been playing better so playoffs are always important for a teams culture and they deserve an addition.

As far as the player is considered, we needed speed and help in transition and this is a nail on the head. Don't care about the softness, we have guys for that. He brings what we don't have.

And a third is meh in general.

I just can't help but think if Brock Nelson and Engvall got into a fight it would look something like this.

I like the Engvall move at this point, but he's a confusing guy. "Pierre" from Sweden? Has a great shot but isn't a good finisher? Built like a statue but he's soft?

Looking around the boards and Twitter, I see lots of Leafs fans talking about how "soft" he is.

If he's built like this and isn't plowing guys over like Matt Martin, I can understand why...
