And the NYI had 5 of the top 11 players in that category. That shows it had little to do with Nelson and a lot to do with Trotz system.
Probably both. You have to have buy in from your players. And this signing definitely does not happen without Trotz's input. My Isles friends tell me, Trotz raved about Brock. Now do coaches make good GM's? Well I am not sure. But the GA60 stat, when you know Nelson faced decent Centers last season, he was not sheltered is a good indicator of yes good team defence, and he was a part of this. He's a reliable player. He will need to produce 50-55 pts and play stellar defence to earn his 6M. The Isles simply had no choice but to sign him. Centers are worth a premium as UFA's. Let him go and not replace him with someone similar. Barzal and nothing behind him. It gets close to a tank job when you have no NHL centers.

Oh I understand why they signed him, because with no replacement, you are in tough.

But for someone who averaged 41 points over 3 years before this career year, it could look bad as early as next year.

It certainly makes me be thankful of Couturiers deal that still has 3 years in it...lol.

Trotz and Lou probably made the call, he played for Capuano and Weight. Was not used in situations as Trotz used him at. All I know is I watched him last year, his talents were used far better by Barry. This is what they are probably assessing Nelson on. Sure if Capuano was still the coach, this signing would be terrible. But under Trotz I can say if he repeats. It won't be. Also I think you edited your post. The GA 60 stat I did make a note, of looking for players that played as either #1'a or #2'a down the middle. Thus Kuraly and Cizikas do not qualify. However as 4th line Centers go, they are 2 of the best where you can trust 5v5 against any line I would surmise.

To me, it says they are focused on the long-term, not the short-term. And that they didn't think their team was ready to go all the way this year (which it wasn't). Now they will either let guys they could have gotten 2nd or 1st rounders for walk for free. Or, in the case of Nelson and probably Lee, overpay to sign to a contract on which they will almost surely decline.

I think they will sign Lee. I see your argument, but I don't think they are going to let Lee walk.

So they have (ages are for next season):

Nelson (28) - signed for 6 more years
Ladd (33/34) - signed for 4 more years
Bailey (30) - signed for 5 more years
Clutterbuck (32) - signed for 3 more years)
Komarov (32/33) - signed for 3 more years
Lee (29) - TBD likely 6 or 7 years
Boychuk (35) - 3 more years
Leddy (28) - 3 more years

All of these players are signed for 3 or more years and charge 3 million or more against the cap.

It's just not a recipe for success in my opinion. And I don't see a logical plan for how this team is being built. From the looks of it, it's basicaly a bunch of aging vets tossed together + Barzal.

While I have been saying this as well, we do have the following to help us out when the contracts begin to expire.

Wahlstrom, Dobson, Wilde, Bellows, Aho, and Koivula.

Another comparison to a guy who signed as a RFA

Snow's mess is going to take more than a year to get straightened out. Maybe you should root for another team if you want us to be the Rangers. Hey, they are right around the corner!
Unfortunately Lou's mess is gonna bigger than Snow's to clean up.

I root for the NY Islanders.

It's hard for people to criticize their favorite team's management. It's also hard to hear criticism.

I don't think the Nelson deal is much of an issue. I assume he'll produce at a similar level (maybe regress slightly) for 2-3 years. It's the back-end I have an issue with.

Still, it's more so the general strategy, which I can't seem to discern.

Before the season, it looked obvious to me what the Islanders were doing. They were signing a bunch of deadline fodder that they could leverage into assets along with their existing expiring contracts.

The surprise season thrust them into a weird situation and they ended up standing pat and getting knocked out rather quickly.

What's the plan now? Is Lou going to overpay guys to try and replicate this years success? Is he going to let them walk? Was last year an anomaly? Will the guys who performed better than expected (Nelson, Filppula, Lehner, etc) be able to repeat their performances?

There's too many questions for me. And I don't see a path to sustained success here. Lou needs to commit one way or the other or else the Isles will be mired in mediocrity and stuck with albatross contracts of which there are already several.

When Lou went into Toronto he had a clear plan and, while making some mistakes, generally stuck to the blueprint. I think the blueprint here got altered and now I have no idea what direction this team will take.

No knock on Lou, but that blueprint was implemented by Shanahan, Lou was not allowed to go outside the box.

Last year's increase in points didn't come in a vacuum. Major increase in ice time over previous seasons, and a major upgrade in role and linemates. When you go from being a wing on the third line with Tanner Fritz and the ghost of Andrew Ladd to 2nd line center with Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle, your points will go up -- and they would have been up even more had Eberle not had a miserable season. Keep in mind, he's scored 20 goals or more in 4 of the last 5 seasons (and missed making it 5 straight by one goal last year). Heck, this season wasn't even his career high in goals (26 in 2015-16). Given the situation, and the fact that he was arguably the second best center available as a UFA this season, it's a deal they had to make. It's stupid, but so is what every UFA gets. He very likely left a little bit of money on the table by not going to market. It will be interesting to see what Duchene and Hayes get, but I'll bet there will be a lot of shocked disbelief over what some GM's will be willing to pay when those contracts get done.

My client..Brrrrrock was one of the top performers on a team that focused on defense...he would have had over 60 pts if they played a bit more open. Seems like a decent deal. 1 or 2 years too long I feel but what can you do?

I do not understand your claimed fandom. Did you expect us to go further than we did this year? If the answer is no, maybe you should watch Lou and Trotz do their jobs. If the answer is yes, hide your ouija board.
