If the team is truly that bad, they’ll be that bad. The coach and the players shouldn’t be tanking and mailing it in, but they might simply not have enough talent to win. If that’s the skeleton squad that Gorton provides to Quinn, fine. I still want to see them compete hard and not throw in the towel.
You could get 18 guys off the street to compete hard.

Those things are not mutually exclusive.

I am not a casual fan and have been watching this team since before you were born so don't be so damn smug. I was never on the tank brigade because I like my team to win and I'm not going to apologize for that either. I did in fact want them to lose these last few meaningless games because I would rather them finish 5th rather than 6th or 7th but it didn't happen, Oh well, not the end of the world. We may also pick top 5 too, we just don't know yet. Wherever we pick all is not lost with another year of multiple first rounders. The future is still bright.

I was also rooting for losses these last several weeks. But that didn’t stop me from smiling at Buchnevich scoring the tying goal last night or at Strome scoring the game winner tonight. Was it a little bit of a rueful smile? Sure. But it was still a smile.

Casual fans don't get this. They're excited about a win that gets us nothing.

This whole "They worked hard" nonsense annoys me as well. As if other teams don't work hard. It's BS. Every player in the NHL works hard, otherwise they aren't in the NHL.

We will pick 8th overall, go with a guy who will top out as a middle-6 forward and 2-3 years from now we have to hear how we never have a top pick in the draft, from the same people who are happy with these meaningless wins

They didn't do that last year, and I have confidence that won't happen this year.

Edmonton and Tampa always come up.

Edmonton is the worst team in sports at drafting outside of the first round. Tampa is the best team in sports history at drafting outside of the first round.

We probably won't be either of those.

Yeah, but the GM has to put this team in a position where they idiot proof the rebuild. I mean, he did a good job and this team only won 5 games after the TDL with the f***ing backup being an asshole, but he's got to stick with this.

Add young pieces who can be long term contributors if you can, but this roster should basically be this same group next year minus Kreider plus Kravstov.

Not every team picking top-3 wins a Cup, but every team winning a Cup has drafted top-3*

We are slowly entering Minnesota Wild territory in terms of rebuilding

*Unless you want to hope for a Detroit scenario, which is the only team to not draft top-3 before winning a Cup in the cap-era

Is the program that they use to pick publicly available? Because I can definitely think of ways to build it where that wouldn't be true.
they used pricewaterhousecoopers for the nhl audit during the lockout so I'd presume it's them

And with the technology we have now, it becomes less and less likely that a Datsyuk (or even a Lundqvist) is floating out there and nobody knows about it.

Only if they get stupid this offseason. They're going to get into the better positions soon if they don't really make any major upgrades to the roster.

But you don't HAVE to draft in the top 3 to get those types of players. It's easier, but I look at Vancouver's core (Calgary too) and would love to have something similar, at the very least.

And thats with both teams completely whiffing on a top 5 selection.

It doesn't need to be top 5 per se, let alone 1st or 2nd overall.

We should be fine with a handful of top 10's as long as we hit and don't rush things.

Vancouver drafted Horvat six years ago. They're just now at a point where we're seeing franchise center, 1b center, elite wing, elite D.

If you don't get the super high picks, then you have to invest time.

There's been no evidence Gorton is doing anything other than a legit slow-ass no shortcuts 5 year plan, lamentations and protestations from HFNYR posters notwithstanding.

Namestnikov and Strome. In fact, you can throw Zibanejad into the same conversation with those two.

They’re not the worst team in the NHL. Last I had looked, they’d played more 1 goal games than anyone else in the league. The worst teams in the league finished below us in the standings because they didn’t keep as many games close.

But then again, this is why I’m generally a happier fan than you are. (No judgment either way on that)
This is true. I wanted them not to get any points tonight as much as anyone. But in the final analysis, 14 times the other team couldn't put us away. 14 times they had to rely on 3 on 3 or shootout skills competition to defeat this team.

I don't know, Gorton has said this won't be long and he's kept his word on everything else in the letter.

I'm afraid either he loses patience, or Dolan does.
