For those of you questioning the RD move... let me explain: we have lots more guys that can play LD than RD

LD:
Josi
Ekholm
Jones
Bartley
Volchenkov
Beitetto

RD:
Weber
Ellis
Jones
Franson

Look at every team that has gone deep in the playoffs the last few years... they've had Def depth. This FINALLY gets us depth on the right side.

Probably the top defense in the league, top to bottom.
Bartley and Volch as reserves when Ellis gets back.

Can't say I'm upset.

I think Nashville already had the best D in the league before acquiring Franson.

I guess Bartley will be hitting the waiver wire once Ellis is healthy. He's signed for one more season as well.

Not stoked on losing leipsic, at all. Toronto always bails us out of cap dump trouble, aka jokinen/Lombardi. Ellis must be out for the year and boutique is likely the press box filler as of now.. Feels weird/wrong giving up what we did for players we drafted years ago.

Always loved franson but not at the cost of leipsic and a 1st. Don't care if it's a late first or not.

Hope they mesh well with our current group.

I just don't see the point. I don't see the need for Franson or Santo on this team. It's not like this team is terrible on D. They are sitting at 2nd in the LEAGUE. Is this team remarkably better today than yesterday? I say no. And now we are down a first round pick and a good prospect for it.

I don't mind Poile going for it. I don't agree that this is what was needed. Time will tell I guess.

What is not to see? This is called depth. You need it for a 2 month playoff run. This keeps us from having to play crappy guys like Bartley in the second pair if someone goes down. This is a textbook move that a cup contender makes near the deadline.

I think Weber may like the deal. I think he and Franson were pretty good buds before he was traded away. If I remember correctly Weber wasn't all that happy when we traded Franson away. I think they may have been best buds.

They will re-sign neither IMO. This is a rental situation for Stanley or Bust.

I'm not entirely sure. Franson re-signing would open the door to trade Jones for a piece like Kessel

Now that would definitely be a move signifying we're more concerned about the next 3 to 4 years then we are the next 7 to 10, but I suspect a lot will depend on how this year's playoffs turn out.

Our pp gets better.
It knocks volchenkov down the ladder or to the press box
It sends bitetto back for more seasoning
It adds some offense to the bottom six that we have been clamoring for.
We don't see jokinens weak wrister anymore

These are all wins. We have been the best team in the league all freaking season. You dump your late first rounder, add depth, and go get that cup.

In his last 106 games, Santorelli has 57 points (.53 PPG). He also works hard and has matured to a pretty good NHL player. Last year he had 3 OT winners and was pretty clutch at times for the Canucks. I think he should fit in well. I also doubt he would ask for a big paycheck if Poile wants to re-sign him like i assume he does (unless for some reason he totally sucks).

Good trade for both teams IMO.

another leaf fan chiming in......santo has been one of our best players. he might literally cost us mcdavid with how many games he was important in our wins. just ask Vancouver fans, they loved him

franson is a bum but he's got a cannon as im sure you all know. decent enough 3rd pairing

Listening to Franson on Sportsnet radio, he referred to Nashville as his "first home". He sounds excited. Said he has never been on a team that has been as dominate as Nashville currently is and is looking forward to the fun.

Leaf fan here, just to inform you that Santorelli was our best player. We all really wanted him resigned, but didn't mind trading him for our second.

When I say best player, I mean he was the only one that did something, and looked much better than kessel, bozak, jvr, etc. You'll be very happy.

I'm a little confused on your prospect. Is he any good?

I can ask you the same thing...what's not to see? Giving up assets for a depth D-man and a scrub bottom 6 guy is not what this team needs. You give up your 1st, Leipsic, and whatever for a Kessel type. I did not see a crushing need for depth D, still don't. So unless this leads to the Cup being paraded down Broadway I think the overpayment was real for both Franson and Santo. Agree to disagree.

Santo is far from a scrub. Just yesterday he scored a shootout goal on an absolute snipe

We did need Defensive depth as we do not need to be playing Volchenkov AND Bartley AND Bitetto (or whoever else the call up is) come playoff time.

Even if Ellis goes down again, or Jones or Weber for that matter, we now have someone who can fill in without it being the end.

I could of sworn that on one of the game feeds they said that Ellis would be out for the rest of the season. I could be wrong but if true maybe that is why they got Franson.

Santo is not a scrub, watch a Toronto game every now and then. He faces the toughest competition of all Toronto forwards and still puts up a 40+ point pace on a bad team.

Ellis skated yesterday and might be able to return in a week or two, at least that's what I heard.
