Auston Matthews was playing some unacceptably poor hockey out there as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Completed the "Jason Allison" tonight by collecting 2 assists without even skating.

Visibly the laziest Leaf out there, from completely unengaged on faceoffs to the point of barely even covering the other center on the auto loss, completely aimless shifts where he's out on a pleasure skate, waiting around for Mitch to do all the work, drifting out of scoring positions and calling for the pass.

Standing around defensively looking busy while not even covering a guy like Rust at the top of the circle. Losing a foot race to 50 year old Evgeni Malkin to get bailed out by Joseph Woll on the scramble (you could count the number of times he bailed on the play thinking it would be a goal against).

Lazy high sticking penalty on the third.

Failed to cover the blueline on the first EN goal.

This effort level is not leadership. I don't care if this is not 100% or working back into game shape, but the rest of the team doesn't need this setting an example.
All of this. If he’s hurt get him out. If he’s 100% then they have much bigger issues with him.

Thi
Hot take central in here tonight 🤣

Maybe give our best player who has been back for just a week (and still has 7 points) a bit of a leash.

He’s only won the rocket three of the last four seasons but go off on how we should trade him and how he’s killing our team. My god.
This is a commentary on this game. Did you watch it? He was outright terrible.

He's not getting traded. But he sucks right now. How many games does it take to get up to speed? 7? 8? To me he is not healthy.

December schedule is tough for every team. I expect a lot of teams to gave clunkers like we saw tonight.

We were/are do for a goofy streak. Hopefully that's the end of it tonight. I'm still confident AM will start tearing it up but it's no doubt unsettling watching him struggle right now.

They play a B2B every weekend this month - Det/Buff next Sat/Sun - on paper they should win but it’s still tough to do.

It's the pairing that makes the most sense. They had been winning the defensive battle too... I dunno, there are things we clearly do not know... I guess.
They aren’t doing anything together two games in a row it’s not the magic of the third period and it throws the rest of the team off we’re now a no line team instead of a two line one

I’m guessing they like how Tavares and Nylander are looking and don’t want to break that up.

Washington and Vegas are having no problems winning back to back games. This Leafs team just didn't show up.
You can win them but it’s not always easy. The Leafs happened to play two semi hot teams.

Murner did absolutely nothing but chip in that fluke goal. He is had a few good games this season and other than that he is invisible.
I havent seen his few good games.

Sometimes things just change and don't work anymore. Instead of Keefing it together, just go back to MM and JT, it was working great and we were winning.

If Matthews is not injured, then he’s been half-assing every game since he’s been back. It looks like her doesn’t give a shit. Berube has to hold him accountable or he’s no better than Keefe. The effect he has on the PP is really disconcerting. When he was off our PP looked really good.

But once again, can we get a goal from the bottom 6? Can we ever win the penalty differential? Can Nylander score on a breakaway? Can Tavares score in the last minute? Can we stop hitting so many posts?

Suck again.

Berube seduced by Keefe's combos.

There and Back Again.

As a longtime Tolkien fan: I don't think you're using that phrase the way you meant it. That was a success story and not about repeating past mistakes. Sorry. had to say it.
