Funny thing is, the problem with our suddenly terrible PK is the same as the problem with our suddenly terrible PP; a guy wearing #34 who is set up to be the centerpiece of this team, but spends way too much time half-assing it.
Funny thing is, most of you folks think I'm crazy because I've said repeatedly that resigning Matthews at 13+ was way over paid and that the team might be better off moving him for a handful of draft picks and 1st pairing Dman

Whether it's Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, Keon, Killer, Messier, Yzerman or even MacKinnon they all have the thing Matthews lacks. All of those guys and lots more have motors that won't quit. Matthews even when he's going he seems to be missing a gear. I know he isnt in their category, I don't know how else to describe it.

Mitch is without question one of the worst interviews in the league. Hasn't improved one iota since he started. It's not close to the most important thing but he is just a car wreck with the microphone in front of him.
Yeah. His lack of maturity shines brightest when he is in front of a microphone. The only nhl player to ever refer to himself as a god. Yes Mitch, that’ll definately help your image haha. God I hope he leaves and same with scamaplan

Aside from one iffy goal (looked like he didn't see ir) Woll was fine.

Second hardworking opponent (playoff style?) in a row and second game in a row with Matty/Mitch together: second bad or at least mediocre game from both.

JT (except on the dot) and Willy were good, although Knies was really off.

Alex and Reeves were ok third and fourth liners respectively. Alex had flashes of good.

Pens' goalposts played well.

Morgan Rielly.. woof..
Boyyyyyyy, your conditioning needs some conditioning. He's never seen a puck he doesn't try to ice. He takes the long way to pucks and confrontations. He points his partners to take action vs taking himself. I've never seen a player avoid more work than this guy. It all trickles down from him and Matty - and the body language hasn't been good. We were winning games with honest efforts despite these things, but all the boys that can't keep up for long runs are all starting to take shifts off. Looking like a totally different group from Nov to Dec, just like clockwork.

Lackadaisical Leafs led by a lazy loafer for leader lose against listless Pittsburgh Penguins

I think Toronto should be more aggressive on the forecheck to start games. Don't wait for the puck to go behind the goal line to run a 2-1-2. Send the extra attacker in as soon as the puck hits the circles.

Get an early lead and then start running a 1-2-2 conservative.

I'm not sure why they went back to the wedge+1 on the pk. Especially since they aren't executing it properly. The players down low need to be tighter.

Whatever they were doing tonight clearly didn't work but they kept doing it anyway.

To be honest no one seemed to care tonight and their post game comments reflect that. Just look at the Captain for explanation why they lost. If they think they're gonna win the cup playing like this may as well add another year since 1967.

It was a group effort spearheaded by a lazy perfomance from the highest paid player in the league.

Pretty much.

Pretty much. They've been hemmed in their own zone to start nearly every period and every game in the last week. It doesn't matter who they put out. Not good.

These guys seriously think they've done enough to earn a lil Christmas break. GTFOHWT.

I criticize Mitch a lot and also think his interviews often come across poorly but I hate that he gets bashed for the “we get treated like gods” comments. I know I’ve said multiple times as a Leaf fan that Leaf players get treated like gods. He grew up a Leaf fan. He was repeating something most of us have said at one point describing Leafs and their relationship with fans.

The Pens are a horrible team with the worst GAA in the entire league. They were clearly getting outplayed 5 on 5 but the Leafs let them hang around with PP chances.

Team doesn't have that killer instinct to put away mediocre teams like the Pens and what happens is these teams start to gain confidence as the game wears on.

He didnt refer to himself as a god. People made that up when he said fans in Toronto treat the players as God's. Still, a poor choice of words in my opinion, but he never claimed to e a god.

Reeves is incapable of doing what is reqùired of him, or unwilling. There were a number of Pens who needed a tuning last night.

Marner needs less to work with, it seems when he has his buddy he hardly tries to make plays and just defers.

Marner is the best player on this team.

If it wasn't apparent already (it was), this team is getting absolutely zero scoring outside the top two lines (the last bottom six goal was by Minten 4 games ago).

Yet another reminder of how ludicrous it is for the Leafs to keep handing out raises to their stars while their forward depth gets worse and worse every year. They've already shown a top-heavy lineup can't get it done, so they doubled down on it.

On the plus side, Treliving has still managed to put together a very solid blue line, but at the cost of forward depth. Brad really needs to spend every waking moment on the phones looking for help from here to the deadline.

We need 2-3 warm bodies at minimum, very cheap and that can produce a goal or two once in awhile. And considering Brad hasn't brought one in already like underscores just how difficult it will be to find & acquire those guys.

I think we have to see how things shake out when the injured guys are back. Pacioretty, Domi and McMann can all produce offense.

Bottom six has to do more.
When Reaves plays the leafs lose.

Same issues as last year. We need more scoring. If our goalies have an off night we are in trouble.

Berube will continue to harp on being north and south and losing puck possession battle with dump ins doesn’t help matters.

His theory is to punish the defencemen with dump ins but you risk losing puck possession most times then not.

Like yrs with Keefer …if your bottom six don’t score then your special teams need to be lights out every game.

And it’s not like we have great contributions from our D on offence either.

JMHO

They should put alex Nylander in for reeves to start at least alex knows how to score goals which we need in the bottom 6 and its going to get worse when kamfp comes back with his 2 to 3 goals per season output

3 goals, 2 assists in his 1st four games back, seems like his average point production. Most seem to be overreacting on Mathews.
At times he does selfish things like the empty net half slapper from their own side of ice the other night.

For heaven sake put a little mustard on your PP passes…

It’s what they are. Nothing new.
