I think when we get Domi and McMann back, we should have the opportunity to ice a dangerous bottom six. Although that's contingent a little on whether Craig wants to keep Minty in the line up. Personally, I think he likely does.
Has Domi done much of anything whenever he has played in the bottom 6? Simple answer is no. So who will drop down to the bottom 6 who will make a difference, when Domi is put back up in the top 6? To me, it's not a hard problem to fix - make a 3rd scoring line by putting either Marner or Nylander on the 3rd line and see if that makes a difference. Of course this should not be decided after only a game or two.

I think the concern is the way the team played without Mathews and the way they play when he is back. I don't know the solution but many think it's time to look at breaking mm and am up.

Marner and Matthews should only go together on rare occasions. When Marner was with the Tavares unit he was free to dance the whole 200 feet for weeks at a time and playing his finest hockey. When he's playing with a passenger Matthews it looks like the two are looking for each other in a crowd at the mall.

Came across these numbers in The Athletic comments section and yeah our secondary scoring is truly awful this season.

Between every player that's suited up for us this year outside of the core 4 + Reilly and Knies, there's a total of 336 games played between them with 19 goals collectively. That's a 5.65% goal rate which is the equivalent of a 5- 6 goal pace over an 82 game season. The crazy part is that more than half of those goals have come from McMann, Minten and Lorentz, with McMann having 6 of them.

This turning on Matthews is insane lol. Some of y'all need to step away from the ledge. Only in Leafs land do we destroy a guy coming off a 69 goal season for have a bad start due to injuries.

I didn't catch last game. If he had a bad game, then yes call him out for.it. But for people to say it's time for him to get injured again.... Lol wtf. It's time for the best goal scorer in the league to get injured again? Maybe it's just time for him to get better? The team is clearly better with a healthy Matthews than it is without.

We might need a bottom six consolidation that looks something like:

-Dewar or Holmberg, you can only have one.
-Reaves, delete.
-A. Nylander, Robertson, get ready to pull the plug.
-Jarnkrok, do not reactivate from LTIR.

Try to find two depth scoring options via trade, looking at sellers from the Western Conference.

If you watched the game, you'd understand the issue with Matthews' effort level last night.

I don't think this is turning on Matthews. The guy has been idolized in this town through it all, and always stayed above the heavy criticism that Marner, Nylander, Tavares and Rielly have all received. He's been given everything a franchise can give a player and he's just going through the motions. There's a standard for all the status that comes with his level as a player. He should be setting it, not reminded of it.

Our best bet with what we’ve got and who’s returning will be a hopeful scoring third line with McMann, Minten, and Domi. Fourth line should be forechecking energy with Dewar, Lorentz, and I guess Holmberg until Kampf returns. Reaves doesn’t bring anything, Grebenkin ain’t ready, Robertson has lost what little mojo he had and needs to go for the sake of everyone.

I'd be wary of counting on Domi. He's like a one year party and the air comes out of the balloon pretty quick after that.

We’ll see. Fingers crossed playing for the same team his old man did keeps the usual malaise from setting in for him. I’m willing for extend him some grace for his goalless start to the season since it’s evident he was playing injured and whatever ailed him kept him out over three weeks, assuming he does come back on Tuesday like McKenzie said.

Reeves is incapable of doing what is reqùired of him, or unwilling. There were a number of Pens who needed a tuning last night.
He thinks he's a hockey player. Pffft. In his mind, he doesn't need to tune anyone anymore. That one handed shot could have been a two handed shot if he had any quickness at all. What he gives now can be given by anyone earning minimum salary.

Matthews with a pathetic effort.

Two nights in a row he made a lazy or stupid play that cost a crushing goal.

Against Washington he tried to make a lazy pass behind the net that hit the ref and ended up out front, then in the net.

Last night he made a stupid no-look, behind the back pass straight to a Pittsburgh player that ended up in the empty net.

Way to lead your team there Captain America.

Matthews needs to look at Sid, the greatest player of the last 25 years; his motor is always running, he's not playing sit and wait.

There is simply no comparison between Sid and Captain America. Sid is on another level entirely.

Last night was one of those games where someone on the team had no snap in the dressing room going into the third period. The team was clearly just going through the paces.

Who is the type who can do that on this team?

I mean, it would be nice to get some secondary scoring.
It would also be nice for Matthews and nylander to step up.

Nylander is on pace for 85 points, last year at this point 115

Matthews is on pace for 82 points, 36 goals last year at this point 106 and 70 goals

Marner is doing everything he can but he’s only one player. We knew the depth was going to be a problem, what we didn’t know was Matthews was gonna be a bum and nylander was gonna revert to 3 years ago.

Watch them play then think about that statement.

When the captain plays like the way he did, I don't think there's a leadership voice that can hold the rest of the group to account.

Yeah. He also looked like he was skating in cement during the clear that happened just before the ENG.

Marner is the best player on the team right now. I can understand the thinking that putting Matthews with him will get Matthews "going", but it looks like an effort issue right now not an injury issue.

I also think the injures are finally catching up to them. I look forward to seeing the team healthy next week. Let Domi and Matthews figure it out together and get it going like they did last year. Leave Marner with what's been working this year. You can always stick M&M back together when needed like a few games ago.

Some believe that guy is Reaves. It has to be the only reason he's on this team, and it appears he's not very good at even that. I just know that 4th line didn't get caved in like it has the past few games where he has played.

2 points last night for Matthews, he’s awesome
I thought thats how it worked too.

Marner was apparently still recovery from a high ankle sprain in the Boston series.

But Matthews is supposed to come off IR and go straight to Hart trophy play.
