Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

As PW said this kid is way ahead of the curve for his age. We’re talking about a 21 year old defenseman with 2 deep playoff runs under his belt, that’s nothing to scoff at.

The great Denis Potvin once said it takes around 200 games before a dman becomes truly comfortable in the NHL. Dobson is gonna be fantastic.

300 games… but your point still stands. Dobson to me looks better than Pelech did at a slightly older age. Hopefully he develops similarly.

Still think Dobson looked tentative more than not in the D zone in the POs. It was either a confidence thing or a strength thing, or whatever.

He’ll get better. He needs to get stronger / beefier.

Where he shines more is in the O zone. That side is coming along nicely.

I think we still need to be patient with him. I think he’s still a couple or more years away from starting to reach his full potential.

D is really hard at that level. But I’m excited about him and the last two PO runs are great accelerators for his development.

There is absolutely no need to be patient with him...
He needs more icetime now, not 2 years down the road.
Your D was exposed by a speedy Bolts team and Noah looked very good compared to other veteran Ds out there and who looked like struggling to transition the play.
The muscular weakness excuse is lame simply because he always or almost always makes the smart play and sees 3 steps ahead.
Unexpected passes to forwards not expecting them was all the time the errors, not his passes.

Disagree. In his own end he was often hesitant and many times failed to move the puck or skate with it, getting caught flat-footed and being overtaken. He's a work in progress in is own end still and needs to develop. Clearly Trotz feels the same way since he rarely played late in close games.

i think we need to be patient, with respect to his development, but i don't see ay reason why he can't get some serious ice-time.

i don't think that his lack of TOI while in the PO's, is any indication that he isn't developing well. Trotz is bringing him along nicely, IMO. making him focus on his all-around game, so that he has a strong foundation to build upon.

Dobson is right on track, this playoff run is going to be huge for his development. It's pretty obvious his biggest problem is he needs more strength and mass. The whole COVID setback certainly didn't help him and coupled with the rigors of the season took a toll on him, he was never the same as he was in the beginning of the season. Meathead diet this offseason, and get right physically for him.

I know it was a development year for Dobson, but it was clear he's a kid still feeling his way through things. There was nothing fancy to his game this year and especially offensively, he automatically made the smart and simple plays to just keep the flow going. I'd like to see a more confident player next year, take the training wheels off. He will never be fully unleashed under Trotz for the immediate future, but there is a lot of room to give the kid more leash to show off the skills.

Turned 21 in January and already 195 pounds. He's on his way to 215 with no problem.

I thought he played fine in the playoffs after the first few games when he was getting used to the pace.

He's got great instincts and we'll all be happy next year!

He'll never be as good of a skater as Leddy, but he's very smooth when he's got confidence. When he's moving down the right wall in the offensive zone, watch out, he's dangerous every time.

Leddy is one of the most graceful skaters I’ve ever seen. His stride and form is perfect.

It amazes me how good a skater Dobson is at his size. He’s so smooth.

More than 20mins TOI this year. Agree?
if you are asking about him as a pool possibility, i wouldn't count on it. BT is notoriously slow, when bringing along the youth. he certainly is talented enough to get some points on the PP, but again, he's not a given.

Pulock = 22-23 minutes
Mayfield = 20-21 minutes
Dobson = 18?

the one thing about BT, is that he will play a kid, if he earns it. it's totally possible that Dobson rocks it all year. and he did look very smooth when working the PP.

i would take a chance on him in latter rounds.

Noah Dobson will enter the third year. Just checked his TOI:
