Im with you, but them (Miller, Boes, Petey) having bad seasons does not make Hughes average (for him) season better. If he was 20-30 points ahead of Makar and Werenski, then ok.

Kuch putting up 144 when Point still put up 90 and Stamkos 81 is more impressive.

The Canucks need to be better than a wild card spot (because the Pacific is a joke) to really pump that argument more for him.

And ofcourse, this still is not referencing any actual defense.

You do realize that as a % based on games played, Hughes is further up on his teammates than Kuch was on Point?

And of course, this is not referencing that Hughes is an actual defenseman and not a forward.

MVP Voting is a contest. Werenski has been more Valuable to CBJ than Hughes has been for VAN. CBJ were expected to be outside the playoffs before the Gaudreau incident whereas VAN are the defending Pacific Division Champions and are underachieving with Hughes as their Captain whether it's any fault of his or not.

I disagree. The bottom teams are pretty bad (Sharks, Ducks, Kraken), but the top three I think are just as competitive as other division leaders (Golden Knights, Oilers, Kings).

Meh, still the weakest of the 4 divisions. I guess could argue with the Metro since NYR fell off the planet magically. But the Kings are meh. Oilers are beyond top heavy. Knights are good. Everyone else sucks.

Still ignoring the fact that Stamkos/Points seasons were on par with what we should expect, where Kuch was insane.

Hughes is on point with what we would expect, but his teammates have fallen off. Point being an MVP or a MVD should be propping his teammates up. The Canucks have simply fallen off of what should be par for them, while Hughes is playing the same.

Hughes went from 1.12 to 1.26
Miller went from 1.27 to .88
Petey went from 1.09 to .73
Boeser went from .90 to .77

Kuch went from 1.38 to 1.78
Point went from 1.16 to 1.11
Stamkos went from 1.04 to 1.03
Sergachev was .81 to Hedmans .97 (serg injury so Hedman took over pp)

Canucks fans and their inability to understand PDO set aside, Hughes is easily the norris favorite and top 3 for Hart

"Sheltered" is such a funny argument to me when it comes to Makar vs. Hughes. The entire premise of the argument is that a player is put into more advantageous positions and is therefore more likely to produce and succeed.

For multiple years now, Makar has been stapled to MacKinnon, Rantanen, (Before he was traded) and an elite parter in Toews. He's played twice as many minutes with MacKinnon as without him. Quinn gets normal rotation of line mates.

There's no defenseman in the league that is in a more advantageous on ice situation than Makar. 3/4 of his minutes every game he has better line mates than any opposition in the league could possibly put together. In this way, Makar is the most "Sheltered" defenseman in the league.

To be fair:

1 - Datsyuk was a forward, not defenseman.
2 - People still argued it should have been another guy winning, voters placed too much weight on his takeaway stats since they were so much higher than everyone else.
3 - Low PK time, but in those 3 years, on a per game basis he had PK times of 1:48, 1:36 and 0:45....still significantly higher than Hughes.
4 - If you check Norris winners, starting in 1997 when time on ice stats started to be tracked, a lot of the winners were 4 and 5 min+. It's dropped a bit in the last 10 years or so, but still 2+ min on average. Karlsson won with 0:34, 0:34 and 0:22.....which are huge outliers, but still significantly more than what Hughes is playing this year.

Sure that's all true but the selke is for forwards so that's why I brought it up as the case being presented is that somehow Quinn's defensive game is the problem, which it isn't

If Hughes wins the Norris this year, it will be something we've never seen before. That's just talking about Norris and not Hart. The year Pronger won Norris and Hart, he was playing 27+ min per night and close to 5 min per game on both PP and PK....so he played in every situation, more than everyone else.

Really as it's funny that the current Norris recipient also didn't play a lot on the PK last year eh?

Voters are voting for the best overall Dman and Quinn is bringing plenty of 2 way play to his second Norris just like he did in his first Norris.

You don't understand how the team is constructed. Like look at the roster. When you have guys like Forbort/Soucy/Myers/Juulsen/Desharnais, who are clearly better suited to play defensive minutes instead of offensive ones, it benefits the team to save Hughes for 5v5/PP and play everyone more to their strengths.

As people have pointed out, he has PK'd previously and was adequate.

If you actually watched him play, you'd see him make good defensive plays regularly, but it's obvious you don't watch him at all, and it's clear you have some agenda you're trying to push. Foolish... but good luck with that.

Karlsson led the Senators in points by 21 over the runner-up (Mark Stone) in 2015-2016 and was 4th in overall NHL league scoring. (Hughes is 12th)

The Senators did not make the playoffs and Karlsson ended up 9th in Hart trophy voting.

Potvin 1978-79, 7th in scoring, 4th in hart voting, really good defensively

Bourque 1990-91, 11th in scoring, 4th in hart voting, also considered one of the best defensive defenseman

Lidstrom 1999-00, 18th in scoring, 9th in hart voting. Best defensive defenseman of his era.

And then I won't say this season is necessarily better.. but Coffey in 1994-95 was 6th in scoring, 4th in hart voting. It was a lockout season and Hughes is just 2 games shy of tying Coffey's GP this season so this is a particularly good comp atm to see how he'd fare in hart voting if the season were to end.. Hughes is 13th in scoring.





I will say Hughes leading his team in scoring by a ton increases his hart chances, and I also think with advanced stats, the impact defenseman have on the game is more appreciated, especially with voters who won't take the time to watch too much of a player..

I do think Canucks have to make the POs for him to have a chance though. Many great seasons never received the award recognition they deserved just cause their team wasn't good enough to make the POs.
