Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

Noah need to do better!!

Pretty easy to fix that!

You need a stay home solid D to play with him.....not a big Z!

Mayfield would fit that description.

Dobson is capable right now to be your top O QB, but Trottz is the problem as he will not give him the confidence needed to blossom.

A small mistake and bang....BT cuts his TOI down.
Are teh Isles heading for the Cup this season?

Dobson has been paired with Andy Greene since the 4th game of the season.

Dare I say it, I think Chara has been better than Greene the last 3 games. Maybe it's time to start reviewing the Chara-Dobson pairing, and moving Greene with Mayfield so he is protected.

I think Dobson has been an issue the last 2 games. He still looks too lanky. Upper body strength seems like it's not there. The inability to box out and being on the wrong side of opponents down low is my biggest issue with him. I think Greene has been just fine but don't expect him to be able to cover up for Dobson's gaffes. He doesn't have that kind of range.

His lack of strength is one issue that time and development will correct. I am more concerned with his sometimes weak puck management. He gets loose with the puck even when there is no opposing player immediately approaching him. His decision making can also improve.
Dobson his size and skill but he has not had the best path to the NHL and it is costing him.

I worry about his lack of physicality. You can chalk some of it up to youth, inexperience and lack of “man strength” but maybe he lacks a bit of snarl.

It’s still real early in his career. He has plenty of time to gain those skills but this far I don’t see the sure fire #1/2 RHD that many are touting.

Players don't typically develop snarl as they get older, I think it's one of those things you either have or don't.

I am not worried about the man strength equation, I think of him as the Isles best offensive D man more and what is holding him back. Scoring does not require more man strength. I think he can do better on offence, the Isles D needs more production from the back line. Only 1 goal scored amongst the D thus far. Chara is sitting tied at 2nd for scoring for D men. That's not his job. Hopefully Noah picks up the slack now that we have played 10 games. I have a feeling he still will this year when something in his mindset clicks, probably too worried about making a mistake on the D side. I think he is at his best jumping up on the play, got to give the kid some reign for him to best succeed. Hopefully Trotz does this.

Been saying since he was drafted I felt he needs to bulk up. Also believe he's still learning in his own end. In the O-Zone, I think he's already a B+/A NHLer.

I think we sometimes forget how young he is. He's still only 21 and got no seasoning in the AHL. Compare with our other three homegrown D: Pulock was ~23 before he became a regular (163 AHL games), Pelech was also ~23 (105 AHL game), Mayfield was ~25 (223 AHL games).

Defence in the NHL is hard. Noah is still very much learning. And he's (hopefully) still getting stronger. I think it's going to be a slow process in his own end with lots of ups and downs and likely a few years before we see what he finally matures into.

I think bulking up would help Dobson in both coverages and puck management.

Dobson would benefit from a partner that cab cover up some of his mistakes. Someone like Lindholm could really bring out the best of Dobson. Greene and Chara are ideally #7 types at this point. A guy like Lindholm could really help to shelter Dobson.

Dobson is coming along nicely IMO, I really like his offensive game, he gets pucks to the net, makes excellent passes and has some elusiveness when carrying the puck. I dont think he'll ever be a top flight scorer, but he'll rack up a lot of assists.
His mind thinks the defensive game well - he's in position and generally makes the right play in the D zone, imo the rest will come with age and and a consistent partner. If these things havent come along by the time he's 23, i'll re-think my top pairing possibility.

...how's Evan Bouchard looking in EDM?

Dobson definitely struggles at times, which is to be expected, but he's still miles ahead of most others at his age. 110 NHL games including playoffs before his 22nd birthday is nothing to scoff at.

Pelech and Pulock hadn't even played a full NHL season yet at that age let alone in 2 conference finals. Dobson will be a stud.

Wanted to present some gems from the Adam Pelech thread. Posters names blurred, but let's give Dobson a little time.

It wasn't until October/November 2019 that Pelech received any praise around here. That was after about 210 regular season games...

Man oh man, this is like the perfect synopsis for all our emphatic, if uninformed, verbal diarrhea on a message board. We all wax poetic as if our decades of fandom and general hockey knowledge make us experts on the subject, but at the end of the day, we're all just fans with varying degrees of hockey knowledge and opinions. And NONE of us are expert enough to work in the game, so that should be a BIG clue right there..

And in regards to Dobson, opining right now that he is or is not the player he is/was projected to be, is nothing more than mental masturbation. If those Pelech posts don't prove that to you, nothing will, so I'll leave it at that.

Well illustrated. Dobson will be fine. He's only played 91 regular season games, he's shown flashes of brilliance, and flashes of still figuring it out. When he does get it finally, the Isles are going to have one fine Defenceman. Development is not linear. This is what I see for Dobson's development illustrated graphically.

He’s still developing (and needs to play in the NHL to develop), but it’s more challenging to do so when two of your six regulars are eligible for medicare.

He’s getting exposed because Chara and Greene should not be in the lineup at the same time (and probably not paired with Noah either).
