Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

I guess those expectations were pretty low.
Yeah there’s no way he’s “exceeding” expectations but I’d say he’s playing right up against them as of now. His confidence seems much higher for sure.

One day soon Noah will be a top pair defenseman for us and knock Ryan Pulock down to 2nd pair. Dobber will be that puck moving defenseman who can also QB the power play. I don't think I'm blowing smoke here. The talent is there. The maturity is happening in front of our eyes.

A young Alex Pietrangelo esque defenseman, that legitimately has that kind of upside.

If there is a positive to the season thus far, it's the development of the young players. I have always believed Dobson could have the impact of a young Seth Jones. It's good to see him continue on that path. There are still going to be some growing pains, but another nugget of circumstance of Pulock going down has accelerated Noah's progression into the stud 2 way D most believe he will become. For me, I can only say I expected this, I actually thought it would occur earlier, but just like junior when he took big steps fwd in his draft year, when it clicked, he became a force with Arcadia. I see a similar path here. Great to see a home grown player blossom before your eyes.

One more thing, looks like that Chara and Dobson pairing is starting to pay off now.

think Chara is playing fine lately. Dobson is getting confident he can cover for the big man sometimes.

I've had Dobson on the 1st pair and Pulock on the 2nd pair on the long-term depth chart for a while. Pelech is #2 LHD. We need a #1 LHD. That's why I'd be willing to trade a lot to get one.

While I get your reasoning, I don't believe in paying up the nose for a LHD. Centers and RHD's are my most coveted assets, a RH shot center is also a plus in my book. Those assets I pay big for, not LW's and LHD's.

We traded him to Colorado.

I love Toews and he was one of my favorite players while he was here. That being said it is like people forgot just how awful he was in the playoffs.

Toews is a solid second pairing defenseman. That is it though. He cannot go at it defensively agains the best of the best which is what is stopping him from being a true top pairing guy.

Toews is currently 4th in the league in WAR (in only 16 games!) which suggests his offensive prowess far outweighs his defensive deficiencies. I haven’t really seen Colorado this year but I think it’s possible that Toews is a bit better than when he was playing for us (which was in his first full season). Dude is averaging 1.25 points a game - system change or not, that’s a player you wish you were able to hold on to.

There have always been a bunch of butt hurt Oiler fans who go out of their way to prop up Bouchard and downplay Dobson to make themselves feel better ever since that 2018 Draft.
Recall the draft that year PW. There were 5 big D set to go early that draft. Dahlin, Hughes, Boqvist, Bouchard, and Dobson. Frankly I would have been happy if the Isles got any of them that year, but never imagined Dobson would be available at #11. They made a mistake I joke and picked him at 12. Sort like how Barzal fell to the Isles, we got another great one here.
