Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

He’s still developing (and needs to play in the NHL to develop), but it’s more challenging to do so when two of your six regulars are eligible for medicare.

He’s getting exposed because Chara and Greene should not be in the lineup at the same time (and probably not paired with Noah either).
I think Chara has looked good the last 4 games, he actually led the Isles in ice time last night. Which to me means the Coach's are gaining in confidence in him. Dobson and Greene have the lowest TOI for the D. Maybe Greene needs to come out or you put Dobson with Chara. Now that Chara is going well maybe he can steady a struggling Dobson. Also Pulock needs Pelech more than Pelly needs Pully. It's just a fact, Pelech is the best Isles D man. And really to me it is not close right now. Hopefully this will change.

Personally I'd take Dobson out before Greene. I think Greene has been fine for the most part. I don't think it's Greene's or Chara's job to "steady" Dobson. He's young. As you said elsewhere, he'll have ups and downs during his development and they'll just have to ride through them as he figures it out. A little stint in the AHL wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for him.

He's still a B+/A NHLer in the O-Zone, imo. But I'd have him as a C-/D+ NHLer in his own end right now. It's just going to take time for him to figure that out (like it does for the vast majority of NHL D-men) and right now we're in a little dip in his development.

Dobson is a poor man's Nick Leddy...Let's not sugar coat this. He does not play with any sort of fire, very lazy and no emotion at all....

Nick Leddy shows fire??? When did he ever? He’s as even keeled as they come.

What Nick Leddy was on the Island was a smooth skating defenseman.

What the hell..that's what I'm saying!!! Leddy has no fire, lazy, looks like he's sleeping on the lice. Dobson is the same thing but with less talent. Leddy has great speed and can really pass and score but he a guy you shake your head saying, he's just wasting his talent away. Not fulfilling he's potential.

Dobson is better laterally than Leddy and can actually do something once the blue line is gained, his shot is also better than Leddy. He's not as fast or smooth of a skater and doesn't get out of trouble as easily. Dobson is still young and some of the mistakes he's making is just him learning what he can do, when he can do it, and how to do it better.

5 years from now, everyone will be scratching their heads wondering why he hasn't gotten it and how he's wasting his talent. I understand that he's young, although at 21 you would think he would be showing some progress. He seems to be regressing with all these turnovers (and it's not because of Chara, he's doing it with Greene). He seems like he's sleep walking, very weak on the puck and he's getting out muscled on the boards and in front of the net. I understand why Trotz doesn't feel like he should get Top 4 minutes now. Not on a cup contending team....Him not taking the next step was 1st a mistake by Lou not getting someone to replace Leddy and 2nd thinking Dobson could hence why they felt comfortable signing Chara to play bottom pairing minutes. Now we have Chara playing top 4 minutes and it's killing us. Chara played 20 minutes against the Devils more than any other defensemen. This year so far Chara is averaging 18.50 minutes a game

Noah Dobson has played 91 games in his career. Don’t you think we should give him a little more time? Whaddya say?

First goal of the season for Noah.

Dobber tried to be a difference maker last night, that was a big step fwd mentally for a young player. Let's see him build on this game where becomes more assertive. Isles need a puck mover from the back line. Noah is best equipped to become this of all the Isles D men. He looked good last night with 26:14 TOI, when it clicks in for him, he's going to become one of heck of a defemceman.

Maybe he’ll finally be able to grow some peach fuzz after last night.
Noah led the Isles in TOI in Detroit and against Chicago. He may be slowly earning Trotz's trust. He's trending the right way, a bit of light in a cloudy season. I recall Dobson in his draft year, where he moved up the draft board as if a light bulb went off, where he became a forceful player. Back to back championships if I recall correctly. I just can't wait when that light bulb goes off with the Isles. It's going to be rewarding watching him play.

I also noticed he led the team in ice time last 2 games, and it got me musing..

I wonder if it's a coincidence that when that happens, he turns in maybe his best back to back games of his young career. For most of his junior career, and probably even before that, he was counted on to be THE MAN. And led 2 different teams to back to back Memori Cups. Made me wonder if maybe that is easier for him (or any such player of that pedigree), like it flips a switch in his subconcious and he cranks it up. As opposed to playing 13-16 minutes a night and knowing he's one f*** up away from losing minutes again..

Not saying I'm opposed to the way he's been brought along, or certainly not that his play was showing he deserved a larger role, just got me thinking about the difference for him mentally, going from being a 30 min a night player who was THE MAN and stepped up and fulfilled the role, vs how he's been brought along with the Isles. I absolutely believe some guys relish and to some degree need to have that responsibility to fulfill their potential.

Time will show how Noah continues to develop, especially with Pulock still expected to be out for a while yet. Was last night a sign of (good) things to come, or a one off fluke?

Maybe time to put Dobson and Pelech together, and hopefully never look back. I didn't like Mayfield's game last night. Maybe have him with Greene, and put Salo in with Chara and see what they can do. But ride Dobson and Pelech almost half the game. We are not in a position to save anyone for later in year. The future is now.
