Player Discussion: Noah Dobson

i would say that Mayfield is a bit stronger in front of our own net, against bigger forwards, but in any other facet of the game, Dobson is superior. i have no problems in considering him our 2nd RHD. at least tied with Mayfield. an enviable place to be, having two really good RHD's.

The thing is that his ceiling is way higher than what you see now.
In this season, he will get better and better.

Dobson might be the most impressive young D-man the isles have had in 20 years. I can easily see him competing for the Norris trophy, as soon as next season

I don't think we see Saiyan mode Dobson for another couple of years, but I think he'll garner Norris consideration when he does.

He is a regular now, but is still sheltered. I don't think Trotz takes off the training wheels fully until next year when he starts using Dobber on the PK. By the 2022-23 season, I could see the kid challenge Pulock for top dog though.

He will have some ups and downs along the way and it's possible it takes a little longer, but he will end up a consistent, rock-steady, all-around minute muncher #1D. He doesn't have dynamic skill, but his overall toolset, and calm intelligent approach will make him underappreciated for years before he fully gets recognized around the league for the talent he is.

And that's ok.

You just described basically all Isles players in general.

Oh, tell me about it...

“Devon Toews, who is that?”

“Why did Colorado give up two picks for Jonathan Toews younger brother!”

Five minutes later after seeing an analytics tweet...

“Holy crap Toews is elite...

“Best d-unit in NHL...

“Joe Sakic G.m.OAt!!!!

Konk said it best all of our players don’t get respect except for Barzal. We all knew that Toews was a really good player who unfortunately we couldn’t keep because of the cap. His numbers were always going to go up in a more offensive team as his skating is elite and he is good at jumping into the play. Shame we couldn’t move Leddy instead but unfortunately his salary was high hindering his true value. Dobson for me has been excellent this season. A couple of shaky games but for the most part he’s been really good. He’s our third best defenseman right now and in a couple of years will probably be our number one defenseman.

I appreciate this view, but in all fairness too, Leddy hasn't been dead weight. He was a needed acquisition at the time and his contributions to this team are enough, while understanding the cap circumstance, to justify his place and importance in our lineup. There were other contracts doled out that I'd be much more critical of when evaluating the ultimate need to move Toews.

In my mind there is no shame in not being able to move Leddy. The shame is in the contracts that were given to guys like Hickey and Komarov and Ladd. The Ladd contract may have been tougher to predict retrospectively, but the Hickey and Komarov deals were more arguably untenable at the time they were made. Those are what handcuffed the Isles in regards to Devon, IMO.

Toews has been amazing. I'd like to say I wish the Isles coulda kept him but I'm pretty happy on both sides of it ;)
I am really glad that he is working out for the Avs. Toews is a great player, sadly he was a cap casualty + THIS CHAD noah needed a spot in our lineup.

As an Islander fan, when looking at the overall picture (cap, depth)... I viewed it as a “good” trade for the Isles, and a “great” trade for Colorado.

I don’t buy into this single-minded focus that there is always a winner and loser in a trade.

Yeah it was a good trade for both with the immediate win for the Avs and more of a "let's see" approach on the Islanders side. Two 2nds is a nice get.

Yes but let me ask, if the Isles preceded to be a non-playoff team as all the “pundits”expected... Would the Komarov and Hickey deals matter?

Both were expected to be depth that sheltered younger player development for a cap floor team. Seemingly, after evaluating the organization management decided they didn’t need a full rebuild.

So here we are a victim of the Isles unexpected success. :sarcasm:

Instead of two years into a rebuild, a 1b contender who could take the next step, or not.

FYI, Staple reported at the time that Komarov was offered more from other teams. This is for the inevitable... “who were the Isles competing against?”

Of course they'd have mattered! Every move that is made must be made with two sets of perspective: Its impact now and its impact on the future.

I feel as if both the Komarov and Hickey deals over-weighted the now impact part of that equation. Had the goal been to get to the cap floor when signing them, then signing them for more at shorter term would have made sense. The length of the contracts that were given to Komarov and Hickey were what became an albatross when Toews became an RFA, IMO.

Now would Komarov and Hickey have signed if they were given more up front, but shorter term? Maybe not. It's impossible to say really. In accepting that though, I think all of us can agree that even at the time, neither one of them were the kind of player that most of us would have lost sleep over, if they'd have walked.

All of this is water under the bridge. I realize that. I also have the advantage of a retrospective view. In stating that advantage I will admit that the Hickey deal didn't bother me too much at the time, even though I was perplexed by the Komarov deal.

So immediately after losing Tavares the feeling was that the Isles were going to be a cap max team by Komarov’s fourth year?

I would say most assumed that Lee, Eberle etc. we’re going to be moved at the deadline for futures. That the Isles would’ve been closer to the bottom than top of the cap.

But they screwed that up and went and made the playoffs. :sarcasm:

EDIT: Just to clarify, I’m not arguing these are good deals for the current team. It’s evident that they are not.

I’m just saying that at the time they were signed they were done so under the expectation that the Isles would be currently closer to what the Devils or Ottawa are now.

Lamoriello and management (like everyone else) erred in how good their own team could be.

Why not? He has the size, speed, and smarts

And he just turned 21 two months ago

He doesn’t have a Pulock-esque shot but he gets it on net

I just don't see the physicality level required or the skating. People here keep comparing him to Leddy and he's honestly not close in terms of speed. Shiftier, yes, but not fast enough. His shot is already better than Pulock's in terms of how valuable it is. He gets it through and it's a great wrister.

I always say, watching a young player blossom right before your own eyes is exciting. Many might be surprised to learn this. He is the 4th highest scoring defenceman in the playoffs with 7 pts behind McAvoy, Hedman, and Maker.

A very positive sign that he's contributing offensively, especially on the PP. He isn't doing anything more than safe plays, getting pucks on net, and keeping it in the zone for the forwards to do something with it. I can't wait until we see a confident Dobson who will be more aggressive and take the initiative to drive offense, but that will come in time.
