The way I view this is the Oilers basically drafted an NHL ready defenseman in Larsson with the 4th overall pick and saved some cash in the meantime.

The difference between Puljujarvi and Hall will be minimal once Puljujarvi plays, because he is a high impact forward, just as Hall was. They reset the clock in terms of forward age as well and are in the process of undoing the incompetence that has plagued the Oilers since 2006. None of the 1st round picks from 2007-2013 were as good as Oiler fans were sold. They had the expectations that they would be the 80's Oilers all over again, and those players simply were not that good.

Now they have a good forward group with McDavid/Draisaitl/Puljujarvi and now a decent group with Larsson/Nurse/Klefbom.

This is the kind of move that needed to be made, and probably should have been made 2-3 years ago (Say by drafting other players instead of Yakupov).

Am I the only Oiler fan who likes this?

Then again, always liked Larsson. I don't mind overpaying at all for him.

In a simulation
I don't get the outrage of Oilers fans, nor do I understand so many people thinking this was a horrible trade for Edmonton. Young top 4 defenseman with Larsson's ability and upside are at such a premium in this league. I think for this to be a good trade for Edmonton Larsson needs to continue to get better over the next few years but at his age and with his skill set there is no reason to think that won't happen. For New Jersey, they get an absolute stud point producing winger in his prime, but they gave up a really good young player/asset in the process.

People always want to say this team won the trade or that team won the trade and overreact to an extreme opinion, but in my opinion this is the definition of a true hockey move which makes sense for and benefits both teams.

I'm surprised that no other team stepped up to top what NJ was offering. Or is it just a case that Chia ran out of patience, much like the Reinhart deal last year.
Other GM's must be kicking themselves after missing out on Hall.

Not true. Johansen is a well rounded two way player. Hall is O only, cherry picker, selfish with the puck. Hard to win with. Not > Johansen.

Ryjo was trade for beeing bad defensivly, sloppy, lazy etc. He is definetly not a very good defensive player. I am not gonna say one is better than the other but saying Ryjo is a well rounded twoway player isnt really true.

I feel like this is going to be one of those trades where everyone thinks the Devils won but in 2 years everyone will know the Oilers won, Larsson is so underrated it's unreal.

Two things I said came true today.

1. Chia is a terrible GM who should be out of work. Oilers fans tried to ignore the Reinhart trade and god knows they had excuses for the Seguin trade disaster...but he is who he is. And he just showed up again.

2. The next time a top winger returns a #1 dman you let me know. Until then...

I'd put all of them ahead of Larsson. How many wingers would you put ahead of Hall?

Ghod danm why couldn't it have been Ceci + for hall? Ceci isn't even that far back from Larsson.

Chirallei is an awful GM.

john kordic for russ courtnall.
Ruslan Zainullin for Marc Savard

but this deal is awful. oil should have gotten back a top prospect, or a first or second.

I mean maybe a oel for hall straight up might be interesting. a top ten scorer and top 5 winger only gets larsson? wow.

Nothing wrong with critiquing the trade, but OEL > Hall. It's not a comparable value.

Hall is better. You can say he had a subpar year but Johansen had 14 goals and 59 point

Based on what exactly???

Ryjo is a 6'3 220 centre - who is a defensively sound talented playmaker. 60-75 pts with previous 30 goal seasons an no injury history.

So to put it bluntly, he's actually better at everything.

He is underrated. But someone like Hamonic is better.

I love this trade only because Oilers fans talked so much **** about the Gudbranson trade.

This Hall Larsson trade makes it look like Benning pulled some Chris angel **** to fleece the Panthers.
