Oilers clearly won this trade. What is Hall gonna do in New Jersey? He's coming off a season with 65 points on a team with lot's of offensive talent. Now he's in New Jersey that has no offensive talent.

Devils fan here going to give my 2 cents...

In a vaccuum, yes the devils probably got the better value. Taking everything into consideration, I am not thrilled as a devils fan.

I understand why Shero made the trade, (stated above, the value was there and NJ acquired the better player) but this is not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be for the oil.

People will say Edmonton got ripped off but the fact of the matter is #1 RHD are more valuable than top line wingers. Oilers had an abundance of young forwards and were desperate for defense. They were able to slightly overpay for a great young one. They can much more easily absorb the hit they take on offense than NJ can absorb the hit on Defense.

As a devils fan I am not thrilled with the idea of not having our young #1 RHD. Shero is banking on Severson turning into one... bold bold move (one of Severson's biggest fans, but still risky).

This trade took a lot of balls to make from both GM's and is the kind of deal that will get one of them fired if it doesn't work out.

I wish Adam nothing but the best and know he will shine on a much better offensive team. Would like to welcome Taylor Hall to NJ and hope him and rico get that windsor magic.

What a hockey trade!

right now? Hall>Larsson

Chia traded from a position of strength and got a potential top-pairing d-man

how many wingers get traded for defensemen?

A potential top pairing who's defensive stats have trended down every season w/ tougher competition and meh offense for one of the elite talents in the west.

Hard to say. He got 65 points on a team where no defenseman could make a pass to save his life. He goes to a team with a better defense but less offense. Could go either way.

Really liked the Gudbranson deal when it happened. Makes it look like an outstanding move with these news.

I get that Oilers fan's liked Hall, and he's an excellent player, but this is what everyone has been harping on the Oilers for for a few years now. They finally went out and traded one of their star forwards for a very good defensemen. Obviously if he never quite reaches that level of being a star number 1 defender than the trade hurts a bit, but this is what the Oilers need to do to make their team better.

Those that think Larsson is anything less than a bona fide top pairing defensemen are going to be absolutely blown away when they pull their heads out of their *****. I hate this trade, it leaves NJ's defense in shambles and we still don't have a #1 center

He might be a #1 RH defensemen on Edm and NJ but that doesnt mean he is a top pairing defensemen. All stats strongly suggest/say he is a top 4 and not really close to a top pair. I watched NJ alot(im a NYR fan) and larsson isnt really that special. Would never deal Hall for him. You guys won this trade by ALOT and you will understand that when you watch Hall play on a consistent basis. He is a damn good player.

Considering the value that kessel got last year, why are people surprised that wingers aren't high value assets?

And by wingers i mean the small, none power forward types

You will be blown away when you see Hall play. Im a NYR fan and have watched both Edm and NJ alot the last couple of years. Hall is a damn good player and i would much rather you guys still had Larsson than Hall. Absolutely nothing backs up Larsson beeing a top pair defensemen other than his icetime.

EDM definitely lost the trade pretty bad, that being said the light at the end of the tunnel for oiler fans is this:

New forward core - Draisatl, McDavid, Pularvi,
New D core - Larson, Klefbom, Nurse
Goalie - Talbot

Now add Lucic to that forward core and some combination of Eberle/RNH will likely bring in another fairly solid D piece, all of sudden Oil are going to be a much better team then they were - which really is the ultimate goal.

If you watched alot, you would know he is much closer to a top pair than a top 4. He is 23 years old. Guess we will have to agree to disagree. I can't wait until Larsson lights up the league on Edmonton getting PP time.

If it's any solace to Oilers fans, this trade may be addition by subtraction. While Hall could score points and had great physical tools, he missed a toolbox and was a dumbass on the ice. Very average at D, did Oilers more harm than good.

You can can be pissed about value not being returned but ultimately this makes the Oilers a better team IMO. I can only imagine the lowball offers they were getting if they pulled the trigger on this so quickly. If your family is starving you're going to think about selling your engagement ring for groceries, and if there's only one grocery store in town you don't have much choice.

The little side story to this is Hall's surprise and chagrin at being traded just when things were looking up. He handled it like a champ, but you could tell he wasn't pleased. Winning cures a lot of that kind of ill but other guys looking to sign contracts in the future will keep this in mind.
