Unless we think we can do serious damage in the playoffs, I'm not trading our #1 pick. We have to restock the cupboard with good young talent like Knies and Cowan. Would be nice to draft a top 3 dman.

Keep in mind that we'd be getting a 28 year old dman that we would almost certainly sign afterwards. He'd be here for the duration of our core's prime. This wouldn't be a rental like Foligno or ROR.

Dmen take a long time to develop - Lil was just coming into his own as a top 3 guy this year...7 years after we'd drafted him. And he's a success story.

To preserve assets the Leafs should ship out Klingberg for a team needing an offensive right D and we can use those assets in a separate trade. I'm really loathe to give up our 1st pick in this deep draft for a rental.

Why would we do that though? Some desperate team would easily take an expiring Klinberg if they need an offensive defenseman.

I think Klinberg is a liability at his price point and would take an asset to unload, but I hope that I'm wrong on that.

Honestly, i dont think Zadorov is an upgrape over McCabe...

A 5th/4th dman playing in a specific role role, bring a physical presence but i dont think thats really THE MOVE leafs need to do...

I think playing Timmins over Klingberg and getting Liljegren back are the biggest upgrades we can make at this point...

But Zadorov and McCabe on D would be really fun to watch... they are both amazing open-ice hitters.

On 32 thoughts Friedman mentioned he heard a leaf player said to Zadorov that " you're the type of player we're missing"

Maybe not exact.

He didn't hear it directly, but secondhand

That whole thing sounds made up quite a bit. Nothing about that report makes any sense and how it was quoted to be. Nobody is that naive to believe it.

Goldstar agency are well known for this this stuff and pumping their players on twitter and creating this fake hype stuff. Mikheyev is a recent example close to Toronto. And it works.

I don't doubt that. Zadorov isn't having the best of seasons, so trying to make it seem like other teams, or at least players want him might drive up the price.

Pretty sure it's a psychology trick. People aren't interested in something until someone else is.

Obtaining Zadarov is replacing Giordano in this lineup. Bottom pairing LD. The main question... what is the cost to obtain him? Second question, what is the cost to extend him?

Clearly, Klingberg has to go the other way, for cap reasons... and then whatever Calgary would ask. Then you have to decide, what are they asking, and is that price worth it?

I've been pretty impressed with Lagesson the last few games though. Simple game, can play physical, defends the front of the net... loved his roughing penalty on Kadri... perfectly fine with that. If the cost to pick up Zadarov isn't that high though... giddy up.

Sure the mediots come out and spew nonsense....and fans eat it up ....

No sources again..........he just heard it ....

click bait

If we could only get rid of Reeves and Klingberg ....things would be much easier...

Would settle for Zadorov and Tanev:

Rielly Tanev
Brodie Klingberg
Zadorov McCabe/Lily

So Zadorov is a bottom pairing guy, but Lily is a top 3? This place is funny sometimes

Liljegren turned 24 years old in April and just entering playing full time. Zadorov is 28 years old and has been in the league much longer. Development and trajectory is completely different.

At 24 years old, many people thought Zadorov would be playing more than 18 minutes a night by now. Zadorov has never played as a 20+ minutes defenseman full time. His highest TOI/G year was in 2017-2018 when he was playing 19 mins. He's never really been a #1 PK defenseman either.

He's not really a beast defensively. He's a big guy that hit's a lot and with interesting tools skill wise but generally speaking, he's been almost always sheltered in his minutes. Can he breakout and play as a legitimate top 4 defenseman on the Leafs or another team? Maybe.

Both Zadorov and Lagesson can play on their off side and like you mentioned, acquiring Zadorov would be to replace Giordano so why not have a third pairing of Zadorov - Lagesson? I think that pair would be really good together. You can also rotate Lagesson and Giordano here and there.

It’ll allow McCabe to stay with Liljegren and Brodie to stay with Rielly.

I wouldn’t say Liljegren is a top 3. Liljegren currently fits in that #4/5 role, similar to Zadorov IMO. I do think Liljegren still has room for improvement to eventually develop into a #3/4 while what you get with Zadorov is what you get.

We can't keep depleting our assets for UFAs. Just wait until next year and sign him if he wants to be a leaf. Save our assets to acquire more assets.

I don't think Rielly and Brodie are the right pairing for each other. It's working out for now, at least this season, but finding the right partner for Rielly, is a must long-term. The challenge of course... is that Brodie and McCabe don't really work together at all.

Top priority should be acquiring a #1-3 D-man who is ~27 or younger. We need a quality addition that can anchor a pair. We're bloated with #4/5's on this blueline. Hanifin fits the bill.

That said, Zadorov would be a welcome addition as long as Treliving doesn't think he's the finishing piece on D. Much like McCabe, he's ideally a #5.

Would love to swap Klingberg + for Zadorov. His value is probably in the ballpark of 2x 2nd round picks due to GM's trend of overpaying for this type of player.

If leafs would have no other need in their D, yes but its not the case... at the end zadorov will just replace schenn and the same problem of last seasin in this D will still be there...

Its not an other 4th/5th/6th d leafs need, its a #2 who can stabilize this D and this guy is certainly not Zadorov.

Hanifn, Pesce should be the 2 target with extension for a long term solution

I heard the same rumor but think about how stupid a teammate would have to be to say, (assuming it was a forward) Hey you know those 6 guys I got behind me, yeah one of them suck so bad , I hope you take their job. Anyone who is not a mouth breathing drooling moron would never think of saying somethign so stupid.... so that eliminates everyone but Bert. ;)

Schenn, Lybushkin, and Hainsey weren’t top pairing Dmen either.
A stay at home physical guy is who Rielly has tended to play his best with.

And none of those 3 guys moved the needle, do we need to continue to make the same mistakes and never learn from them?

Schenn was an absolute stud.

That pairing was arguably the best D pairing in the playoffs. I was really skeptical about bringing him in, but he was amazing and paired with Rielly they were amazing.

Lub sucked, Hainsey was fine.

Not as a #2.
