I think the price was tied to no retention because the Flames may be moving a few players. Leaf's don't need a 3rd pair LD at that cap hit and if Klinger is out for the year they will be looking for a solid top 4 RD rather than a maybe. If his game hadn't fallen off around the time of the trade request maybe a 2nd but every club in the league could have had that today and nobody was willing to pony up. He was only worth a 1st to that spanker that came up with the Robertson + Abruzzese + a 1st and Klingon for Z rumor.
