Very interested to see what the race looks like in two weeks, when very briefly, the games in hand gap for McDavid closes to 1 game through April 3 (before it falls back to 2 through April 4).

No question that he needs to start piling up some 4 and 5 point games. He’s had none since his 6 assist game in mid-February. Since then, Kucherov has had 3 (4, 5, 4) and MacKinnon has had 2 (4, 4).

Yup, better to play it safe and dump the puck instead of carrying it 200 feet for league-leading scoring totals.
Look, I agree that skilled players are going to hold the puck more and give it away more, so a lot of giveaways doesn't necessarily mean too much....my point was to be realistic, Kucherov isn't a good defensive player, and that's ok, but we shouldn't dig up stats like takeaways to try and suggest he might be good at defense.

If Kucherov finishes with more points and he still gets his (worse) team into the playoffs will they still give it to MacKinnon?

The margin isn't quite as clear as it is with his team lead in giveaways....close to double the next guy....and 1st in the league.
Yeah and Mack and McDavid are also in the Top 10. Shocking... players who have the puck the most will also have the most giveaways. *Sarcasm*

Maybe they should all just make the safest pass every time to help out that stat? Or even better... just don't touch the puck!

It's hard to assess Kucherov as a defensive player. His giveaways aren't so much a result of him having the puck (that's obviously part of it), but more that he is depended on for offense this year like never before. So he takes more risks than usual (and he always had a green light) because he is pretty much our entire offense. He needs to score if the team is going to win.

In his own zone, he's actually pretty solid. Good at stealing the puck and making good plays. This isn't vintage Phil Kessel or anything. He's definitely involved in the defensive side of things. But that's balanced out by when he takes offensive gambles that burn the team.

Will post the same as the other thread. Mac will win. Good Canadian boy that has almost no personal hardware. Voters will be itching to give it to him.

I assume its Hart we are talking about now. IF all things being equal, points/goals, it should go to Mack. If Kucherov ends up with 8-10 more points, it should go to him, his division is tougher, his team is worse. Oilers only have 2 games in hand against TB, and McJ 10 points behind, while I wont bet against McDavid ever, his team is not firing on all cylinders and the amount of games without rest and travel is likely catching up to all of them in northwestern canada. No one is goign to be running away with it.

Luke Glendening only has 3 giveaways in 68 games this year

clearly Kucherov needs to model his game after him

they're on the same team i'm sure he'll teach Kucherov how to play Hockey if he asks

Should easily have three players with 120+ points. First time since 1995/96. If they all have good finishes we could have three players with 130+ points.

An update after tonight's games:
  • Kucherov: 55% (previously: 17%)
  • MacKinnon: 32% (previously: 54%)
  • McDavid: 22% (previously: 37%)
  • Pastrnak: <1% (no change)
A lot has changed since I last posted ten days ago. Kucherov is now the favourite for the Art Ross trophy. He's scored 11 points in the past three games. MacKinnon and McDavid have both played well objectively, but have lost ground relative to the Bolt.

Kucherov, MacKinnon and McDavid are all virtually certain to reach 120 points (barring injury). Pastrnak has about a 7% chance (previously: 6%).

Probability of reaching 130 points:
  • Kucherov: 98% (previously: 64%)
  • MacKinnon: 93% (previously: 91%)
  • McDavid: 82% (previously: 80%)
  • Pastrnak: <1% (no change)
Probability of reaching 140 points:
  • Kucherov: 38% (previously: 6%)
  • MacKinnon: 22% (previously: 26%)
  • McDavid: 16% (previously: 18%)
  • Pastrnak: <1% (no change)
Kucherov has about a 1% chance of reaching 150 points (previously: MacKinnon and McDavid each had about a 1% chance).
I'm not going to repost all of the tables. But with 4 points tonight, McDavid is now 6 points behind Kucherov (with one game in hand). He's also 5 points behind MacKinnon (with two games in hand).

Updated odds - Kucherov is at 49% (down from 55%), MacKinnon is at 27% (down from 32%) and McDavid is at 32% (up from 22%).

They all have to be far below their points per game this season going forward to not reach 130, its gonna happen. McDavid who is furthest behind needs 18 points in 15 games.

Yes, probably. But also possible that the Oilers might rest McDavid or at least reduce his minutes if they're locked into a playoff position and he's out of the Art Ross Race with 2 or 3 games left.

You're right, you'll see it more down the last stretch of the season.

Oilers don't give a f*** about another Art Ross, they want a Stanley Cup.

McDavid will be the first to tell you doesn't care. And I truly believe he doesn't. He's won so much individual hardware at this point that a cup is all he's focused on.

Luckily voters don't give out the Art Ross.
