They might play a semblance of defense and backchecking. Kucherov doesn’t have those words in his vocabulary.

McDavid does until the playoffs when he's a defensive pylon and cherry picks every shift until he eventually gets knocked out over and over again.

Mackinnon on the other hand, you have a point, he actually knows how to win - like Kucherov.

Their teams know how to win. Put McDavid on the Avs or Lightnings Stanley cup teams in place of MacKinnon or Kucherov and the cups are still won. Trying to use a play off argument against McDavid is so silly when the last 2 seasons he’s averaged around 2 ppg in his last 2 playoff runs combined.

2ppg and still lose, says a lot. Maybe he's just a bad leader?

Is there anywhere you can look up empty net stats? Feels like Kuch has at least 10 pts on the empty net this year.

Kudos to him though, they all count

On NHL website's you can, under miscallenous section for stats

He does have 10 points. 6 goals, 4 assists, good guess
McDavid has 5 empty net points (1 goal, 4 assists)
MacKinnon 7, 2 goals 5 assists

10 is most in league. His teammate Hagel has 9, also tied with Matt Tkachuk.

As you say, they all do count. More then that, a player will always get my respect for empty net points as they're arguably the most important points possibe, as they essentially guarantee a victory.

Updated after last night's games:

Kucherov - on pace for 143 points and 50 goals in 81 games. 14 games to go
MacKinnon - on pace for 139 points and 50 goals in 82 games. 13 games to go
McDavid - on pace for 135 points and 103 assists in 80 games. 16 games to go
Pastrnak on pace for 116 points
Matthews on pace for 68 goals

In regards to games remaining:

Kucherov in his 14 games plays SJ, ANA, NYI, MTL, PITT, CLB, OTT, WSH, BUFF. 9 non-playoff teams, and at least 5 bottom feeders.

MacKinnon in his 13 games plays CLB, PITT, MTL, CLB, MIN, MIN. 6 non-playoff teams, but only 3 bottom feeders.

McDavid in his 16 games plays BUFF, OTT, ANA, STL, CAL, PHX, SJ, PHX. 8 non-playoff teams, 5 bottom feeders

Kucherov is in the lead, is pacing for a 4 point gap at the top, and has the easiest schedule left (cetrainly easier than MacK whose #2). Not only that - but considering Kucherov just scored 11 points in past 3 games vs NYR, FLA & VEG, he doesn't even need easy games to accumulate points...he's been doing great at scoring a lot against top teams.

MacKinnon is obviously super close, only 1 point behind Kuch today, but he has both the least # of games to go and by far the toughest schedule of the 3. He can still win the Art Ross, but it's definitely looking less favorible for him than Kucherov

McDavid has fallen off a bit past few games. He's now on pace for "only" 135 points. He does have the most games left, and arguably the easiest schedule of the 3, or at least very close with Kucherov. He's also only on pace for 103 assists, so it's not a certainty he tops 100 assists either, though he is still pacing for it. We all know how good McDavid is and how good of a finisher to seasons he is, so I definitely don't count him out yet, but he needs to start racking up some 4 and 5 point nights soon if he's going to catch up still.

Someone highlighted that in another thread. But it is incredibly impressive how he performs against top tier teams. A point is a point, both for players and teams, but at the same time, it isn't. Starting to sway me in the Hart discussion.

This changed as the season went along. MacKinnon deserves it a bit more. Plays center and actually plays some defense too. The guy ison the scoresheet pretty much every game. He's playing at an insane pace right now too. MacKinnon has to edge this out if it holds up for the rest of the season.

oh shit, internet dude from HF just pulling out a new advanced stat he calls the xDP (expected deserve points)

what is good deserved points to shoot for when I get my deserve-o-meter running? what should my team look for in a deserving young forward? please share with us your numbers.

IMO Kucherov should win it (as of right now of course). But unless Kuch finishes with 6+ more points the writers are going to vote for Mackinnon. I've heard multiple media members state that they are "shocked" that he has won it yet and elude to it being "his year".

Agreed. Normally it should be the guy with the higher point total on the clearly worse team, which is Kuch if he wins the AR. Basically seems like a lifetime achievement award this year.

find it hilarious Kucherov had next to no votes compared to Mackinnon and McDavid when the latest "who will win the art Ross" was created.
It was just a timing thing. He had kinda slowed for a handful of games and MacKinnon passed him just before that, so it was fresh in the minds of those shallow fools at NHL.com.

Please don't act like he's getting disrespected. Look at this season long thread title for example.

yep, shades of Due Doughty, Conn Smythe Crosby, Conn Smythe Niedermayer and Oscar Paul Newman.

I think McDavid is out of the race at this point. As an Oilers fan it's been fun watching him chase Art Ross and Hart Trophies all these years but bring on the playoffs already. I think Kucherov will win the Art Ross and MacKinnon gets the Hart.

Will never count McDavid out, but I'm unsure he'll catch up to either Kucherov or MacKinnon. Those two will be battling it out the rest of the way.

What I do want to see though is McDavid hit 100 assists on the season. A feat so rarely seen and only done by the three greatest players of all time.

Kucherov is team leader in takeaways by a clear margin, top 25 in the NHL. Pretty good without a semblance of backchecking.
The margin isn't quite as clear as it is with his team lead in giveaways....close to double the next guy....and 1st in the league.
