The NHL is doing the right thing. The guy's a dick, but freedom of speech is a real thing here, and all he really asked for was freedom of silence. Just didn't want to participate. While I personally think that makes him a nitwit, he has that right.

I'm a big fan of our propensity for gay pride here, but I'm just as big a fan of free speech. Forcing him to participate, punishing him for not participating... reeks of compelled speech to me. Let that be Canada's thing.

People have zero right to free speech in a private enterprise such as the NHL. The league would be well within its right to penalize him for this. I'm not saying they should, necessarily, but he's not constitutionally protected in this context. (Personally, I think he's disgraced himself and harmed his reputation thoroughly all on his own.) Same goes for refusing to stand for the anthem or whatever, regardless of how I or anyone else feels about their protest or the reasons for it.

NHL shouldn't take any action, but the Flyers absolutely should have. He skipped an obligatory team activity (pre-game warm-ups) based on refusing to wear the team's uniform for the day, and hampered the organization's Public Relations in the process (both in terms of the media blowback, but also very directly in terms of the charity raffles for that gear).

they got us 8th in the east and playing the Bruins.

I think we should hold onto our 1st this year ;)

I hear ya, and again, I personally agree. But there's nothing to be gained by publicly mandating activism. Kinda defeats the purpose if it isn't voluntary. Hive's right about the team having more latitude because they can argue he skipped a team whatever, but the league's far better off just maintaining their support for the cause and otherwise staying out of it. If they kick up a fuss they're just hitting the reset button on an ugly news cycle and putting the NHLPA in a bad position.

Agree. And yeah, the Flyers (and Torts, personally) look terrible in all of this. As for activism, I'd say it's team/franchise activism, not individual in this case, and Hive's right that Provorov undermined that. There should have been consequences for that.

I...don't think he's going to be there? Rosters haven't been finalized--the final two skaters and goalie for each division will be named tonight--but I highly doubt it. Especially after this but not like he was close either way.

When the League makes these things mandatory, they can dole out consequences. I expect that would have to be collectively bargained.

not necessarily at you…..but imagine if this was in support on Ukraine…..are they forcing Russian players to wear tribute sweaters? Lol…..funny to imagine.

The Flyers also have to be a bit pissed because his name was out there as someone they wanted to move and this isn’t going to help up his value.

Side note: he’s not very good and a far cry from the player he looked like he could become. Remember when Philly was widely panned as having the top or one of the top prospect pools with Provorov being one of the Crown Jewels? Seems like a long time ago.

It’s why the “warmup” games for Backstrom and Wilson had such high stakes IMO. Losing out on 4 points against the Flyers hurts a lot.

Making the playoffs is one thing but avoiding the wild card and especially avoiding WC2 is imperative if they really hope to have success. I’d much rather the path for the first two rounds be something like:

NJ -> CAR/NYR

instead of:

BOS -> TB/TOR

These are all results of blowback from ignorant people. f*** those people.

This isn't activism it's basic human decency.

When like 70% of the country is OK with it, it's not activism. It's the culture and people fighting that culture are the activists.
