This is why the NHL is doing this. Part of "awareness" is making some unwelcome parts of society aware that they're now in the minority, and making everyone else aware who's in that minority.

If the NHL is sponsoring this initiative then discussing it and flushing out those who oppose equal rights for all is the intended effect, and we should be following suit as a forum discussing the league.

Otherwise what's the point? Certainly not "pride".

Shit... he didn't even have to play in it for 60 minutes, just warmups.

At a certain point maybe the calculus needs to be "will I bend in my beliefs to make a bunch of money in an international league or is my pride going to keep me out of the NHL?" Anyone who believes that strongly doesn't need to be there anyway.

so being ready to lose money for their beliefs makes people indecent?

If a great many other people believe their belief is indecent then yes. I’d say I make the same effort to avoid supporting these types of bigots as I would racists or sexual abusers so if the league I supported made it even simpler to avoid giving those people my money I’d be fine with that.

If a growing portion of the people who pay to support you identify with a cause you feel strongly against you should have much bigger day to day issues looking yourself in the mirror

When their beliefs are shit, absolutely.

What unbreakable tenet of his religion specifically says "thou shalt not wear a piece of clothing for 10 minutes at your professional sports job that supports other peoples' rights as LGBTQ"? Does this guy follow every single passage of the Bible down to the letter, including the contradictory parts?

Know what, I don't even care. Nevermind. The made-up shit he believes in doesn't override the rights of others to exist.

Take a stand against those basic rights and you out yourself as a simple-minded religious bigot, not some crusading hero.

He and anyone who feels the way he does can f*** right off, and stay wherever it is they f*** off to.

Lol so seemingly angry all the time. Does him not wearing a piece of clothing for 10 minutes override the rights of others to exist?

He‘s so inconsequential I say hell no.

If the NHL really wanted to support this, every single team should wear these across a couple of nights in a single week, and then you have a sweater from every player/team and buy in .

Do all teams not do their own pride night? I thought each team had one much like the hockey fights cancer night where each teams schedules their own that month?

I’m not sure but someone earlier said not all teams do the jersey thing…..Caps did stick tape I guess….dunno.

I'd like to see players start refusing to participate in all the stuff glorifying the military.
How dare they honor that…..the horror.

They are playing in this country--well, this continent. Their customers are in this country. If Ivan wants to be a bigot, then go do it somewhere else.

But @CapitalsCupReality is also right. Provorov's ultimately a gnat, and his "protest" only serves to show how shitty and stupid his POV is.

Keep me out of nhl? He should lose his job that he worked for all his life just because he does not support the same things that you do? Really? Its pothetic what this world has come to. People should not have to think about loosing their jobs just because they do not agree with something. People also should not be made into sheep. He supports what he supports and you support what you support. Until either one of you breaks laws or harms other people you both should be left the hell alone.

Wow 13 games on tonight! Busy night for the NHL!

Very frustrating that there is so little real movement in terms of battling to make the playoffs. I think Colorado are the only team currently moving up the standings to challenge for a spot. Even the Caps are still 4 points clear of the Isles and they've only played 1 more game.

imagine being a top 3 team in the Atlantic, there's almost no movement potential.

The NHL and teams made a business decision that this was best for their business. Refusing and making headlines based on your opposition to something they're doing to shore up their image is simply bad for business. Nobody is entitled to a specific job, even if they worked all of their life for it. Sometimes you have to do stuff you're not thrilled about.

What he supports is ignorant bigotry. Apparently so do you.

Nobody needs to tolerate that out of some bogus idea of fairness, or gotcha games involving middle ground fallacies that twist the meaning of "tolerance".

This isn't a dispute about casual choices it's about who people ARE. The way they're born.

It's not about opinions regarding "support" of some idea, it's about rights to equal treatment.

With these Pride events the NHL is telling all such bigots "we don't want your money or you as fans...take a hike".

And at some point they'll tell players like this the same thing.

Seeing the posts on this thread reminds me of a great line from the movie Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, the screenplay written by Dalton Trumbo.

"When you're demanding tolerance, where do you draw the line at giving it?"

"When you're demanding tolerance, where do you draw the line at giving it?"

Generally speaking, when it invites domination and trampling of civil rights by a would-be oppressor. People who don't recognize your right to exist should not be tolerated. That's an obvious paradox that resolves when you stop trying to make "tolerance" a universal principle, which it never was.

"Tolerance" is a term that became popular 30 years ago in the age when "don't ask don't tell" exemplefied the typical compromise solution, which was to first get people to stop being so openly discriminatory and violent. Things didn't really start changing until Matthew Shepard (sp) was murdered.

Twisting "tolerance" beyond the original "let's stop the bashing and killing first" context, and making it into something so broad that it loses all meaning, was never the intent.

It's a weak attempt at "NO U" judo.

Meh, don't give a shit Prov wouldn't participate in pride night. Not my personal beliefs but I'm also fully accepting that other people are also allowed to have their own beliefs and it's none of my business nor my responsibility to push my own beliefs on them. One of the worlds biggest problem is too many people are worried about what everyone else is doing. Focus on you, support and believe in what you want and let other people think for themselves. Don't like what they say or do? Stay away from them, don't give them the time of day and move on.

As a veteran I could care less and it's their right to boycott or not. I don't believe in forcing anyone to do anything, especially in the USA. If the organization or employer don't like it so be it. There are other opportunities in life.
