Speculation on LeBrun’s part, but no thanks to that price tag if it’s true. Use the first round pick elsewhere.

Agreed. It’s almost a coin flip if he would be better than Vanecek in the playoffs. Goaltending is too unpredictable unless you are getting one of the very top guys

Vezina goalie gets traded for Markus Hannikainen, then has a brutal season and he is suddenly worth 1st + mid-round picks? Seems legit.

Can we trade Nicklas Backstrom on past accomplishments too? I'd take Alex DeBrincat, Kirby Dach and 2 1st round picks for him.

Either way if they were to target a goalie then atleast go for a guy that would be an upgrade for this season. Fleury is a big question mark and a guy who doesn't seem to even want to come here. Hard pass on someone like that.

4 straight regulation losses to the following behemoths in the East: PHI, BUF. PIT, CBJ

I think VV has earned the job at this point. Let him have a full playoffs and that is to pricey for a rental goalie.
I wouldn’t mind moving Sammy to give full reins to VV. Bring in Anderson or some other veteran backup. Fucale and VV next year. I think Sammy would generate good value now!

Plus 50 percent retention. I don’t like the player much, but that’s not a bad price for Colorado especially given the retention.

Schedule is just really weird because of the cancelled olympic break. Caps have had way more 5 and 6 day breaks they would never had in a normal season.

Colorado with another good move in isolation, but also sets them up to make a big move soon.

Get a 4th line player at the lowest cap possible and clear out $2 mil for next season too? Nice move, another one coming I'm sure

I also have to think Vancouver is less likely to sell at this point, especially since their big targets like Miller, Garland, and Boeser are all under contract or RFAs into next season. They can always trade these guys in the offseason if they want without losing too much value.

Boeser is a little different given the QO situation so there may be some urgency there if offers are strong enough. Motte may end up being a self-rental and the other two shouldn't move barring strong returns.

Vegas went 0-5-0 on their road trip. First streak of five straight regulation losses in franchise history.

Good. Teams to need to experience the suck in the NHL. Not cool going from expansion to powerhouse right away. Hockey gods mad.

Some good stuff here. I guess the Caps are ranked 12th but I'd have them a spot or two higher pre-deadline. Pretty fair assessment, though Vanecek's recent play does suggest they may have something there. This modeling doesn't account much for coachiing, special teams, chemistry/experience or certain depth pieces but it's an interesting look at main components and how teams stack up.

Backstrom is definitely an issue in terms of ceiling and I think Carlson probably is as well. They're the most troubling from an athleticism standpoint but also cap value and potential further downswing. I have more faith in Kuznetsov being an elite center vs. Carlson on D. While a middle six forward upgrade seems likely it's arguable that a D upgrade on Schultz could pay off to a larger extent, particularly if all they make is a modest depth forward add.
