If he yelled "Buddhist!" would have he been suspended? "Zoroastrian!"

Very weird thing to be offended by.

Right. If we value consistency then they can either limit everything of this category, or let everything fly. The consensus in this thread is that an insult of this manner is silly. So others of the same sort should also be viewed as silly. None of these insults are threats or anything to take seriously.
They should just use discretion but I’m sure lawyers run the league. I feel like 10 minute misconducts should be given rather than suspensions barring serious slurs or low blows at at player or their family. I’d love to know the backstory, like was Sim going beyond chirping and just berating a player all game who was just staying in his own lane and the ref just had enough? There has to be a deeper plot than someone getting suspended for “Mennonite” or “p***y”. Those are more or less generic chirps, well the latter at least lol

Probably yes, if the league is consistent. Within what is written in the rules as another person said, or as I said, in general values. There must be a story between the two players, if one felt the need to report it?

Yeah it's strange! There was another player, forgot his name, who chirped about another player's dad being dead. He didn't know if he was dead. But he actually was dead. That seems a lot worse? Was he suspended?

Imagine being a hockey fan and waking from a 15yr coma to go to a game and see a player get suspended for calling another player a Mennonite.
Man, I would hate to have to explain how we got here lol

Using white religious denominations as a put down are inherently less edgy. But they are just trying to be consistent which is fine i think.

Saying "haha ya f'in Sikh" to a South Asian player would he get you a suspension. So why should it be different for the central European players ?

How did he use it in a sentence? That might have had something to do with it rather than just saying that one word and skating away under his halo.

Oh man, count the number of Canadian players who have put on false Russian accents. It can be pretty hard to interpret if it's out of endearment or mockery. So this is the slippery slope of consistency.

This whole thread has been dominated by some combination of...

I'm not offended by it, therefore it shouldn't be a problem.
I don't know what a Mennonite is and therefore this shouldn't be a problem.
This is hockey so xenophobic remarks should be allowed so this shouldn't be a problem.

And the few who are saying that regardless of specifics, all xenophobic remarks should be eliminated from what is considered trash talking.

So a typical HF thread dominated by low IQ people because they can't inform themselves and/or think about anyone other than themselves.

Actually, wait. I can't use the term low IQ individuals because that would be an insult to those who are low IQ but who do think of other people other than themselves. My bad.

Let's just go with selfish douches who can't see beyond their noses.

I feel like this suspension and subsequent press coverage of the suspension has potential to do way more harm than good. A bunch of idiot hockey players are surely going to use it as an insult now more than ever.

Exactly. Someone once said, if you want something to stop, then stop talking about it. Bad people look for soft spots to attack, so don't tell them where it is, but expect whatever the flavor of the month insult may be, since they listen intently for what usually offends people so they can use it later. Talking about it snowballs the problem.

So I'll make something up and say I'm in 4th grade, I'm really, really, sensitive about my having an outie vs. an innie bellybutton. You can bet some bad kid in the class would latch onto that and get everyone to laugh just to hurt me. So stop talking about it. Don't give away your blueprint of what makes you tick to just anyone.

Being offended, or finding new and unique ways to be offended doesn't make one smart. It would make one look socially insecure.

There's no evidence that anyone has been offended by this. The ref only did its job by reporting the violation.

And yes, it IS weird, because Mennonite doesn't carry any connotation as far as I know. I suppose they just put a line in the sand.

Just call the guy "soft-brained donkey", case closed. It's also significantly meaner than "Mennonite".

Historically they have, and it's due to their Pacifist beliefs and refusal to fight in wars.

He got suspended for calling someone a p***y. So he upgraded his vocabulary and hit the history books to find a new way to call someone a p***y

I mean if the rule is
"intended to provoke an opposing player that was marginalizing on both religious and cultural grounds."
And the referee heard it

His agent even said he used the term without understanding it
Sounds like this kid is an ignoramus. I guess that would be a suspension if used in the OHL too.

I guess but it still feels a little too sanitary. I personally don't understand how it's insulting unless you're spicing it up but then I'm not a Sikh or Buddhist or Mennonite. Like i get why yelling "towel head!" at a Muslim is worth a suspension but not "Muslim!" even allowing the guy meant it pejoratively and not a statement of fact. I can accept it though.

IF so, how?
Mennonites are pacifists and anti violence. It wasnt uncommon(but also not super mainstream) to call someone that didn't want to fight in war(specifically WW2) a quacker or Mennonite in a perjoritive manner(as seen in Band of Brothers by Bill Guarneer).

He got suspended for calling someone a p***y last year, he's just reaching into the history books to do the same thing.

I got called a Luddite once and it took me years to recover. I told him he was wrong and just sat in an unheated room lit by a candle, seething.
lol, I have a buddy who is older and still has a flip phone and I jokingly call him a Luddite

Again, if you can't avoid using religious creed or ethnic origins in your slurs, I'd say you're the one being soft.
If a kid is loaded with acne I can call him a pizza faced loser

If a kid is overweight I can call him fat POS

But nooo attacking someone's religion and calling them a mennonite because you think his religion is dumb is wayyy too offensive and mean...

Where do we draw the line? How about just no mean comments allowed at all. Seems fair for everybody
