Ugliness isn't "race, age, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, creed, gender, sexual orientation, marital status or disability".
Same effect. Again, the matter is to limit everything, or limit nothing. Or there is no authenticity to the pledge of hockey for everyone. My own opinion is beside this fact.

I'm going by the letter of the rule here. As for you opinion... well... you care about it, I guess.

Besides, the retort for being taunted due to ugliness is.. like, super obvious. Can't post here because not within site rules. But it involves significant other, backside and general enjoyment.
Do they punish for insults about disability? Like if a player is partially deaf or is missing a finger or something and he's taunted by the opposition for it, is that suspension-worthy?

Wonder what would happen if a black player called a white player “whiteboy”. Going by the stated rules is silly, and unless there is a deeper backstory, “Mennonite” probably isn’t going to offend anyone. You know crossing the line verbally when you see it

We probably agree, that's the feeling I get. The OHL wants to limit all speech that would target something characteristic about a player to protect their butts. Someone else mentioned, as a sort of bulwark to more severe things. But wouldn't this continue on to other unchangeable traits involving appearance, if we assume that they actual care?

So in a roundabout way, we agree they do not care, and are only imposing punishment due to fear of legal repercussion. And I am saying true authentic consistency would be for them to let everything fly. So the lack of consistency shows that it is purely a legal matter, and not actually caring. The difference between what we wrote is simply in the length of what was typed.

According to the letter of the rule, yes.
Factually? I obviously can't tell.

That's the thing : he possibly didn't even know.
Which makes the whole situation even more ridiculous. He basically used a word he picked up from somewhere as an insult when it's basically not an insult at all, and got suspended 5 games for it. lol.

Seems like an easy enough thing to avoid, and given the way the league has clearly imposed a zero tolerance policy on chirping about religion, it also seems like the punishment was obvious.

Right. If we value consistency then they can either limit everything of this category, or let everything fly. The consensus in this thread is that an insult of this manner is silly. So others of the same sort should also be viewed as silly. None of these insults are threats or anything to take seriously.

Letting everything fly seems like an extremely stupid thing to do. Why would the league want to do that?

They wouldn't, since it is a very bad look. I do not think there is much middle ground. And this could makes things eventually seem pretty nit-picky if they commit to true consistency.

It is if you use it as an insult.

"haha ya f'ing menonite" is probably what he said. To someone who probably is one. It's a put down.
So important to recognize nuance like you said. Say, in court, that a jury is reviewing e-mail messages. They cannot easily interpret the tone. Although a message of "I hope your health stays good" could very well be written with a wink and a crooked smile that only the sender and receiver may recognize.

This guy was suspended last season for calling a player a p***y, too.

Are other players getting suspended for this same stuff or does the league just hate him for some reason? Because this is absolutely embarrassing how f***ing soft every part of society is becoming. If you’re okay with players getting suspended for mundane trash talk like this, you are the problem.
Get with the program man. Society is ruled by the NPC's.

If he yelled "Buddhist!" would have he been suspended? "Zoroastrian!"

Very weird thing to be offended by.

They should just use discretion but I’m sure lawyers run the league. I feel like 10 minute misconducts should be given rather than suspensions barring serious slurs or low blows at at player or their family. I’d love to know the backstory, like was Sim going beyond chirping and just berating a player all game who was just staying in his own lane and the ref just had enough? There has to be a deeper plot than someone getting suspended for “Mennonite” or “p***y”. Those are more or less generic chirps, well the latter at least lol
