Team International Hockey Team: Germany U20

I couldn't say anything about this earlier because I didn't want to pick-tip anyone. Here is how this works. @Strawberry Fields picked Germany, and he can choose any of the blouses and any of the players from any age level, past or present - his choices are unlimited. I only get the blouses used by the U20 team and the players from their U20 days. There is some overlap between me and Starberry, but like I said, he has everyone and everything Hockey Germany open to him. I am not taking anything away from him.

I can tell you that there is one more category this phase which has an extremely similar loophole to it. If you think of it and want to ask me specific questions about it in PMs, I'll be happy to answer - I would have done that for this one, too, but no one asked.

"The next selection of the Tampa Bay FireSticks will likely be of no surprise to those (few) who have followed our drafts to date. We are very pleased to choose as our International Hockey Team, the Canadian Women's Team.

2022-OLYW-medals-line.jpg

"Although largely overshadowed by the men's international teams, the Canadian women have compiled an incredible level of success, including 12 of the 21 IIHF gold medals given out since 1990 and 5 of the 7 Olympic gold medals since women's hockey became an Olympic event in 1998.

"We pass the turn to everyone's favourite digit, @BigToe."

Who cares though, amirite? Subtract, subtract, subtract, subtract.

We start the day with @BigToe on the clock, @JojoTheWhale on deck with a pair (phrasing), back through Toe to @BernieParent on the lido deck, and me on the lido afterdeck.

This Big Bran, or All Bran, or whatever, is unbelievable. I didn't eat it because I was looking for a reaction - I just couldn't find anything else to eat. But I certainly got a reaction. They really should give it a more action-packed name, but I don't think even that would help. This is like if you sprayed Tough-Actin' Tinactin on your Athlete's foot and your foot exploded. And then the shrapnel of your ex-foot exploded. Repeatedly. I guess this is what it's like to be "regular," but I don't think it's normal. You couldn't keep this up for very long or you'd have no intestines left.

Well, that's enough of that, innit. Just be careful out there.

She had an unbelievable run in the 1960s alongside her partner, director Jean-Luc Godard. The two of them in large part determined what the Nouvelle Vague would look like.

"Karina is regularly considered an icon of 1960s cinema, a staple in French New Wave cinema, as well as a style icon. The Guardian described her as an 'effervescent free spirit of the French new wave.' The New York Times described her style as looking like a schoolgirl in her acting roles, regardless of whether she was playing a streetwalker or a terrorist. Her signature look was her dark hair, wispy bangs, heavy eyeliner and school uniform of primary-coloured sailor-uniform tops, knee socks, plaid headwear such as berets and boaters. Refinery29 wrote that 'Her 60s French girl style – think sailor dresses, tartan, long socks, and hats – and mesmerizing doe-eyed beauty mean she continues to be referenced today by the super-stylish.'"

Providence would like to congratulate proud Plat Lana Del Rey for her release of what we believe to be an all-decade album

I finally gave it a start to finish listen last night, then went back today. It really is fantastic and feels like a synthesis of NFW! (ending with "Venice Bitch" remixed was an awesome touch) and Blue Bannisters/Chemtrails. It's as across the spectrum delicate and aggressive as you'd expect and sometimes not expect. This whole Antonoff + Lana era is superb.

My favorite of the non-singles (phenomenal) are "Sweet" and "Paris, Texas" (which feel like they could be in a Lana musical); "Candy Necklace"; "Grandfather please stand...."; "Let the Light In" (probably the standout radio tune w/ Father John Misty); "Fishtail"; "Peppers"; and "Taco Truck xVB." The back half slaps in general. Yes, I just listed every song on the album besides four of 'em (which are fine) and the interludes (which honestly feel indulgent and skips).

I'll have to give this a listen tomorrow...if I can manage to stop listening to the new Caroline Rose and Depeche Mode albums.

We start the day with my brother @Hollywood Cannon on the clock, @Beef Invictus on deck, Milord on the lido deck, and Chuckles on the lido afterdeck. @BernieParent can make up his pick as soon as he finishes catching up on his well-deserved sleep.

I had a really f***ing stupid dream last night, and I woke up in the middle of the night after it was over thinking that I would definitely remember it, but of course now I barely do. I was in some kind of college kind of school, and I was a student, and there was this test coming up. I was ridiculously confident about it, even though I didn't know what it would cover. Next I remember I'm walking down this street in a trashy part of town here not super far from where I grew up (which wasn't trashy, despite what Biff will tell you about railyards and chains). I went inside this shitty apartment building, where there was a paper bag full of paper plates. In the next room was this former Major League pitcher named something Navarro (because I watched Mando last night). The test was that I had to sing like four lines and the chorus of two different songs. I don't remember the one, but the other I chose was "Halo" by Beyonce. I struggled, natch, but not too much.

We walk out of the apartment building and Navarro holds up a paper plate with a score of 5 out of 15. I was like "What the f***, Navarro! That's bullshit." So he gave me five points for one, and zero points for "Halo." We walked down the street and I kept cursing him out and hitting him with paper plates from the bag. The urine was nearing the bursting point, so I was half-awake, and I was convinced that Navarro was a real Major League pitcher in real life. I don't know why I'm even sharing it, it's so stupid.

That f***ing All Bran is still working. Unbelievable.

Taco Truck is actually the demo! Pretty cool.

This is the best songwriting she's ever demonstrated. She has always been sadgrl (and who can blame her, she's been through it), but this is unprecedentedly emotional. She has always been critical of her scene, if not self-deprecating at times, but this is a much deeper and introspective record. Grandfather Please Stand and Kintsugi lead the way here, and are commentaries Bob Dylan would be proud of.

This record is also her most diverse. Let The Light In dabbles in gospel, Peppers is hilarious and clearly Billie Eilish inspired, Taco Truck/VB and A&W, takes a stab at electronic pop, and of course you have Sweet, Grandfather, Fishtail, Margaret, and others in tow rounding out her more traditional Lana style.

Musically, it's just beautiful. The Grants takes you on a trip right off the rip. The intro slaps you in the face with...what? A good mood? The singers messing up the words, laughing, singing in C major, dividing into beautiful harmony. Abruptly, this ends. Lana enters the room in what I think is C minor (or C#m I have tried to play it yet), and the Queen is here. However, she crescendos back to C major during the chorus and we feel hope and optimism again, and we repeat this roller coaster until the outro swells into a full blown refrain of newfound self confidence and empowerment (I'll take mine of you with me, and I'll take this, and I'll take THAT too, and THIS TOO). I'm not sure we've seen this from Liz before, let alone as the tone setting opening track.

As I touched on before, the Billie Eilish inspiration is very clear throughout, even outside of Peppers. She uses silence and quietness as an instrument, and her voice is so strikingly contrasted to her instrumentation in the master mixes that she almost cuts into you, just like Billie. Unlike Billie and unlike I can ever remember from Lana, she uses her vocal melody as the driver of the melody of the song at times, and I think this is most clearly demonstrated in Candy Necklaces.

There's something to comment on with each track on this album. It's easily her most complex project emotionally, lyrically, and musically, and you wonder what combination of those 3 pillars of music she'll explore (read also: knock out of the park) with each passing track. It gets full marks for me. All decade.
