They only recently started trying to engage ottawa and mtl because Drury is sticking to his guns, neither of those teams is getting him, Ottawa is too early, and mtl has enough centers and not enough wingers

For the Danault crowd, his expected contract is 7 years 6.3M per according to evolving hockey which is usually kind of at least in the ballpark

Wonder if any NHL team has taken zero centers with 7 straight 1st round picks.

Brennan Othmann 2021 LW
Alex Lafreniere 2020 LW
Braden Schneider 2020 D
Kaapo Kakko 2019 RW
Vitali Kravtsov 2018 RW
K'Andre Miller 2018 D
Nils Lundkvist 2018 D

If Othmann turns out like the rest I'll forget about it but this is a new gm from the guy that picked those players. We really hit on those picks...i mean Laf and Kakko were gimmes but the rest were great picks, the only dud lately was Andersson.

My complaint with the draft is we took grinders when we should have been taking skill and looked for skill when we should have been draftinf grinders. Hopefully it works out, in the grand scheme of things this draft wont mean much because the cupboards are fairly full outside of center.

Just like analytics tell us faceoffs don't mean anything... until you are clearly inept at late game / PK faceoffs.
Forget analytics. Explain to me how static matchups work when 80% of shifts start when you jump over the boards. Use the eye test and explain it to me.

I like our draft. Othman has a very good shot at becoming an interesting top 9 forward. I really like Korzcak who definitely also can become a performer. It’s been a crazy year, but he got a lot of tools. Raw talent. Lamb is really raw but got a ton of upside. Grubbe has potential to rebound well in which case he will be a bit of a steal. The other guys seem primed to be on the national junior teams and get into the top action and can hopefully build on that.

I’ve not followed these kids at all, but seem like an interesting group.

This statistical fact was not posted with any opinion or implications attached.

I just found it interesting.

I think the previous GM did a great job hitting on the first rounders outside of Andersson and I'm not even sure what happened there, i think the kid got caught up in the hype, got injured, and things unraveled then.

You shouldn't be looking for top 9 potential around the middle of the first round though. The potential should be top 6, and saying top 9 really means third line to be fair but it gives the impression the player could be more. There's 0 chance Othmann is gonna crack the top 6 on this team in the next 4 or 5 years.

New Eichel trade packages…..

Othmann, ‘22 lottery protected first, Jones, Strome and Georgiev.

On the center topic, there is a fundamental issue with the development of center in the hockey world right now. And especially outside the CHL but also to some extent there too. Why? Without a redline offside rule, fairly stretched out play in junior hockey, if you have a kid that is like 3x the competition — how is he best utilized? Many coaches stick the biggest talents on the wing nowadays with a little bit more defensively responsible center. You just have. To back check so far at center and hold back a little offensively there. Look at Sweden and Finland, talents like Puljujarvi or Peterson were always played center 15 years ago. Now they are wingers.

Many of the centers out there are pretty “meh” to be honest. Even guys like Lundell and co, they aren’t real “game breakers”. I think that there is a big risk that these guys that are strong and solid across the board with just strong but unspectacular tool box will become pretty average performers in the NHL.

I loved the Russian kid that went in the 20s last year, I loved Newhook, but these guys are pretty rare… I like Henriksson who is a poor mans version of those guys. But there are so many centers that just don’t really impress me. It’s hard to find them.

Not for nothing, but with some of the deals these D-men are getting it hilarious that people think Trouba is going to be hard to move when his NMC runs out.
I would never pay that amount of money for danault. That’s absolutely crazy town

I trully believe that Panarin drives play. He does not need a set up center. Danault would be fine by me...but for the love of God, please stop sticking Goodrow on the 2nd line. The result would be worse than play Fast there. leave Goodrow on the bottom 6.

Jones is our one young Dman people are sleeping on.
I agree. And TBH, Blais has better hands and more offensive chops then goodrow. Leave goodrow in the bottom 6. That’s what he is. A premier bottom 6 player
