Why would you only have 1 to choose from though? There’s literally nothing special about those first 50 games and if anything as scoring tightens up near the end of the season you could argue it’s more difficult to do later on. It’s an 82 game season and games 1-50 are just 1 of your 33 chances. Why would you need to get it in your first 50 games?

Also like I said when another season starts you get to play games 1-50 again. Unless you’re comparing it to someone who did it in the only 50 games they could play in which is what Richard did and why the “official” 50 in 50 exists to begin with it makes no difference.

It's special because there only being 50 games in the season when it first happened, like you said in your second paragraph. Of course its being compared to that, I don't think that was ever in doubt, you can recognize that it's a great feat while recongizing that is slightly less great than the official records.
I don't really understand why you keep circling back to the other seasons. So if you play 10 years you get 10 attempts to match Richard and Gretzky, et al. Whereas you get 330 attempts over those 10 seasons with all other available stretches of 50 games to match Matthews and others who have done it that way. This doesn't disprove that there is a difference in difficulty/probability between the two, nor does it say that the way Matthews did it is poor and he is crap. There's a middle ground in there somewhere.

You only have one chance to get 50 in 50 from the game Matthews started. It's more "arbitrary ".
Lmao, with the new millennial math, 33 tries vs one try, and he missed games in the middle of the feat, so wasn’t even in 50 leaf games in the middle of the season, it was over a 52 game leafs span, as he was suspended, in the middle.

Keep reaching, it won't make it sting any less when he's named MVP

It does come to a point where McDavid fans kind of just have to acknowledge that it’s unlikely he’s winning the Hart this season. I’m in that camp of McDavid fans who love posting about his greatness every chance I get, but it just needs to be accepted (and maybe even enjoyed) that Matthews has had a fantastic year in his own right and there are narrative elements for both that they are in control of and not in control of that will come into play.

McDavid should be looking at his 6th consecutive top 5 Hart finish and likely his 4th finalist nomination this season. I can promise you that as long as he remains healthy, he will probably be so for at least the next 5 years.

If nothing is too different next season, but McDavid crosses 130 points, he will very likely win his 3rd Hart. He still has a chance at a 4th Lindsay to go with his 4th Art Ross.

For now, it’s likely hats off to Matthews this season, no matter how obnoxious some Leafs fans can be.

It’s too bad Keefe doesn’t trust Matthews enough to put him out with his team defending a lead in the last minute of a game.
Wait.....how can that be true for the greatest defensive centerman of all time who is also the greatest sniper of all time?

All jokes aside it's quite bizarre that McDavid having lots of EN points is somehow a negative lol. It means he's on the ice defending a lead, something that Matthews doesn't seem to be trusted with.

Odd innit?

He's allegedly miles ahead of McD defensively.....yet is rarely on the ice to close out games. Something doesn't add up

Edit......Matthews also has the fewest d-zone starts in his team lol.

So not trusted to close out games and not trusted to start in his own zone lol. Maybe hardly ever starting in his own zone is why people think he's a Selke level forward, easy to look good defensively when you never start in your own zone.

There's also that whole 5v5 goals against thing and HDSC thing to consider 😅😅😅

Sure he would've. Because there are OTHER players on the team, like D-men and a Goalie. And he's also in a really good Division, perhaps unlike McDavid.

But for the record, I'm not one of the ones proclaiming that Matthews is better, or that he's the only one who deserves the Hart. McDavid could easily win it too(or Josi) and I'd be fine with that.

I'm just here to slap down dumb comments. So............"hi". :)
Are you really saying that a division with the Wings, Sabers, Habs and Sens is a "good" division?

Yeah, what a murderers row lol

4, 5, 6, 7 place teams in the Pacific all have more points than the 5th place team in the Atlantic. Wow, what a monster of a division 😅😅😅😅😅

I don't think we're disagreeing. Matthews obviously has a good case for the Hart this year (he's one of several players with a valid case). I think some of the other points you mentioned (first 60 goal season in a decade, first "50 in 50" since Lemieux) are better arguments than 0.80 GPG (since historically 0.80 GPG hasn't translated into Hart success unless the player also won the Art Ross).
50 in 50 isn't relevant if it didn't start at Game 1. It's never, ever, ever been tracked any other way.

@RavenGuard

Why is your name Raven Guard, but your avatar is an Ultramarine?

It’s actually tracked as a mid season 50 in 50, and something that is very much kept track of. Matthew’s is the first player since Lemieux to do it

Well, Florida, Toronto, Tampa & Boston sure destroyed the Pacific this season, as is evidenced by their 42-19-4 record against them. Who cares how Buffalo, Montreal & Ottawa did? LOL. The top four teams in the Atlantic OWN the Pacific.

Matthews has a better chance at the Hart if he was #2 in scoring and not #5 and not 16 points behind. Like others said, his 2 games suspension and injury cost him the Hart and maybe even the Ross

Well, I was going to use the Raven Guard logo/helmet but it looks a little too similar to a certain European military logo from the 40s lol.

BeakyBoyz are my #1 but I'm down with the Ultras as well. It's just a stand in till I find something better.
haha f*** it man, don't let the nazis win!

Auston Matthews deserves to be in Hart consideration but its solely due to scoring 60 goals. anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. its not because of his overall offensive production because there are numerous players better and its certainly not because of his defensive ability. Leafs coach values Matthews the 4th most out of his 4 centres when it comes to defensive zone starts. Keefe would rather start any of his other centres in the defensive zone than Matthews, and Im guessing his has a better idea of what's going on than Dom Luscizion.

defesnive zone faceoffs:
Kampf 418
Kerfoot 345
Tavares 327
Matthews. 296

not only that but even with these gravy zone starts Matthews has given up 37 High danger goals against. only one less than the leading leafs forward, Nylander, who has played 7 more games.

Matthews will likely win Hart, but its more due to hype machine in Toronto than actual value to their team.

From Keefe this season...

"Auston has really established himself — in my mind, and for those who really watch him closely — as a dominant defensive player. With the work habits and competitiveness that he has, he is ready to take on more.

There are so many things that go into it. We think he adds a lot to the penalty kill when we use him."

has a forward ever won the Hart while being outside of the top-5 in scoring? Looks like Kaprisov could pass Matthews if he's sitting for the POs
Taylor hall in 2018 was 6th in pts and won the Hart with 93 in 76. He'd have finished 4th I think if he played 82 games and he obviously carried that year with the devils being crap offensively outside of him

To quote myself from another thread (going back to 1948 - the first official Art Ross trophy):

Only four times has the Hart trophy winner finished worse than 5th in scoring (excluding, obviously, the goalies):
  • In 1975, Clarke was 6th in scoring. He was just five points out of third place and was far superior defensively the players ranked immediately above him. Still, it's puzzling as to why Orr didn't win (he won the Art Ross - the second time he, or any defenseman in NHL history, had done so).
  • In 1955, Kennedy was 11th in scoring. As has been discussed in a few threads here, this is widely speculated to be a "lifetime achievement" award. Kennedy announced his retirement prior to the start and had contended for the Hart in a few prior seasons, but never won it. The only semi-legitimate reasons for Kennedy`s victory is that he benefited from vote splitting (three of the top five players were Canadiens).
  • In 2000, Pronger was 45th in scoring. If anything, I was surprised he ranked that high in scoring, given that he's defensive defenseman (with solid, but not outstanding, offensive talent). It was the first time since 1969 that the league didn't have a 100 point scorer (excluding the 1995 lockout year), and perhaps this caused the voters to conclude that no forwards were deserving. (Jagr, Sakic, Bure and Turgeon were all on pace to hit the century mark but missed time to injuries).
  • In 2018, Taylor Hall was 6th in scoring. He probably got credit for helping the Devils significantly improve in the standings (up to 97 points, from 70 the year before); significantly outscoring his nearest teammate (93-52 point lead over Nico Hischier); and having a really long point scoring streak. His biggest competitor (Nathan MacKinnon) faltered down the stretch.

Taylor Hall 3-4 years ago.

Matthews is doing the right thing by resting for the playoffs. He’s already won enough games for his team to clinch their spot, thereby earning the right to rest a meaningless game. He’s also already accomplished everything he needs to do in 73 games, and doesn’t need to play anymore.

PPG wise, he finishes the season at 1.45. 2nd in the NHL for those having played at least 50 games.
