Think that's based on games played, lack of respect for the position vs its counterparts or something else?

The Hart is basically a forward award.

Defenseman stopped winning once the Norris was established. Goalies get the Vezina.

Since 1962 (60 seasons) you've had four goalie seasons win the Hart and four defenseman seasons win the Hart. So 87% of the time it goes to a forward.

Of those 8 non forwards, 3 were peak Bobby Orr and 2 were peak Hasek. So only 3 times has a non forward won the Hart since 1962 without having the highest peak in their position's history.

I don't think it's a coincidence the defenseman stopped winning it immediately after the Norris was created.

Thank you for the answer. Kinda wild that the forwards have more awards than the other positions combined but still get 90% of the benefit for Hart and probably the Lindsay as well.

You answered a question that I didn't ask.
Not sure why you brought in a goalie. But okay. If the goalie was the best player on the team like Hasek then sure you got a point.

Matthews is the best player on the leafs and they're still winning without him. McDavid is the best player on the Oilers. Do you think they're going to win games without him?

So you are saying Edmonton’s D and G are better than Toronto’s?

I already posted the stats that show the Oilers goalies have been better 5v5, so certainly in that respect. The Leafs have been 28th, Oilers 20th. Though it's more about the random distribution of saves when players are on the ice, but I'm well aware how much people hate to hear about luck and probability here.

I brought in a goalie because I was curious if the same rules applied to a keeper, since Shesterkin was a front runner most of the season but obviously can't play every game.

Was just genuinely curious if the same "rule" was applied since inherently they can't play a full season.

It shouldn't apply to goalie cause it's not wise. Players and defenseman can play every games and it's been done yearly.

It's just rare for a defenceman to be the most impactful player in the league over 82 games. Forwards tend to drive play more than defenceman, which leads to a bigger impact at 5v5 despite the minutes differential.

I wouldn’t read too much into the Leafs winning without Matthews given the small sample size.
Also while I think the Oilers would miss McDavid more than the Leafs would miss Matthews, that’s never been the sole test for the Hart otherwise great players on strong teams would always miss out on the award. It’s a combination of MVP and best player of the year award.

If he scores tomorrow it is literally the best goal scoring 50 game stretch in 30 years…. And he’s 10 goals away from the best goal scoring season in the cap era…despite missing 7 games

He’s also 2nd in PPG, 5th in scoring, while being the best defensive player of any of the players in the top 18* in scoring.

* Arguable between he and Barkov, but I’ll give Barkov the benefit of the doubt here

Some of you just refuse to give him credit

No one cares about any of that shit outside of Toronto lmao...the Hart is for the MVP not for some cherry picked stats over a 50 game stretch

Auston Matthews deserves to be in Hart consideration but its solely due to scoring 60 goals. anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. its not because of his overall offensive production because there are numerous players better and its certainly not because of his defensive ability. Leafs coach values Matthews the 4th most out of his 4 centres when it comes to defensive zone starts. Keefe would rather start any of his other centres in the defensive zone than Matthews, and Im guessing his has a better idea of what's going on than Dom Luscizion.

defesnive zone faceoffs:
Kampf 418
Kerfoot 345
Tavares 327
Matthews. 296

not only that but even with these gravy zone starts Matthews has given up 37 High danger goals against. only one less than the leading leafs forward, Nylander, who has played 7 more games.

Matthews will likely win Hart, but its more due to hype machine in Toronto than actual value to their team.

It's not my opinion, champ. It's how the NHL recognizes it. The NHL does not, and presumably never will, recognize Matthews as scoring 50 goals in 50 games this season.

Also, the Hart isn't awarded for 50 games played. It means, in the other 32 games he could have contributed to (he will end up appearing in 23 or 24 of them), Matthews scored 10 goals.
Uhhhh

Now that the season is essentially over:

3 votes for Matthews, and 1 vote for Shesterkin. That sounds about right. Matthews would win but not unanimously.

Of note, former Oilers player and coach Craig MacTavish chose Matthews as well.

Among the reasons given by the experts, in their words: team winning, 60 goals, historic goal scoring totals and pace, monster defensive season, will earn Selke votes, takeaway machine, top faceoff guy, newly-added physicality.

60 goals is nice but when your team is still winning games while you're injured/suspended. That's not MVP

This is, and always will be a dumb argument.

Kucherov is a Hart and Lindsey winner, and his team is good enough to shelf him an entire year and still cruise into the playoffs.

60 goals in 73 games, people, let that just sink in.

The hardest thing in the NHL to do, score goals and he crushes his competition at it.

And he's got 44 even strength goals in 73 games...no other player even has 40. 5 on 5 goals, the hardest thing to do in the NHL, and he's dunking on the competition.

He's winning the Hart, and ya'll just have to accept that he was the best player in the NHL this year.

Think about the players ahead of Matthews. McDavid, Gaudreau, Josi, Drai. Anyone one of those players missing games, their teams won't be winning game.
such a weak and lazy argument. Grasping at straws I see. Any one of those players would be deserving winners. But it should come down to Mathews or McDavid.

Exactly. Here's a great post from @TheDevilMadeMe that really makes it clear: HOH Top 60 Defensemen of All-Time (Preliminary and General Discussion)

From 1924 (the first year the Hart was handed out) to 1953 (the last year before the Norris), there were 40 defensemen who finished in the top five in Hart voting. (The real number might be even higher, because we don't have the full voting results for some of those years).

From 1953 to 2011 (what TDMM posted), there were only 38 such seasons. If you extend that to 2021, there are only two more - so we're up to 40.

Pre Norris trophy? A minimum of 40 defensemen finished top five in Hart voting in the span of 29 seasons.

Post Norris trophy? 40 defensemen finished top five in Hart voting in 66 seasons. So the likelihood of a defenseman finishing in the top five dropped by half (and eight of those 40 years were Bobby Orr).

I don't think there's any reasonable explanation for this other than writers decided to give defensemen less credit than they deserve because they have their "own" trophy. If you take the Hart trophy voting literally, there has been one instance in the past thirty years where a defenseman was a top three player. That's an absurd conclusion.

Among the reasons given by the experts, in their words: team winning,

Uhm that applies to pretty much everyone in every Heat race lmao.

60 goals,

Really the only true thing in this list, but is that enough?

historic goal scoring totals and pace,

No lol

monster defensive season,

Monsters are generally bad so this makes sense given the pile of goals Matthews has been on the ice for this season.

will earn Selke votes,

2 votes from the Toronto media maybe sure

takeaway machine,

When they introduce a takeaway trophy he can win that.

newly-added physicality.

Is this why he gets hurt so much?

You’re out to lunch then considering the NHL has already recognized it (yes I’m aware they differentiate between official and unofficial 50 in 50s for the record books) and it’s not any less of an achievement despite what you wish to believe. Also wow only 10 goals in the other 23 or 24? Better leave his name off the Hart ballot lol

Copium. you know you are not arguing with the poster you quoted but to the hockey experts that he quoted?

You are not a hockey expert last I checked. Nobody is quoting you in articles...last I checked. You are just a voice on these boards who's currently suffering from copium. Last I checked.

It's very likely a Toronto Maple Leaf is going to win the Hart this year. I know, I know...that sucks. No Toronto Maple Leaf deserves to win anything at anytime because their fan base pisses you off but here we are.

Copium.

Your argument only supports McDavid even more by bringing up Kucherov's Hart winning year which coincidences with the Ross winning year. Who else won the Hart while winning the Ross by a wide margin? Drai and McDavid. Looks like McDavid is about to do that again

What I'm saying is, Tampa is still a solid team, with or without Kucherov.

It isn't nor will it ever be a deterrent to vote for a player, outside of HF circles of course.

Speaking of experts, here’s what the guys who play the game say:
‘Andrei Vasilevskiy is still considered the best goalie, Connor McDavid is still the guy they’d want on their team, and Sidney Crosby remains the player considered the most complete, according to the results of this year’s National Hockey League Players’ Association poll. ‘
