It's a great contract. Whether or not they properly build a team around it is immaterial.
But it's not. That's not a contact in a vacuum, it's them thinking this is an answer, just like the great contracts of Spezza, Thornton, Simmons, etc.

Nobody wins this way. Why do they keep thinking this is going to work?

It will be okay if he actually falls off a cliff soon enough they add at next year's deadline still or actually do play their Sandin or Liligren types next year.

Spezza has been pretty good the last few years and almost every team has some shit fourth liners.
 
If relying on 39 year old defensemen to stabilize your top 4 is what you’re looking for, then by all means go for it.
 
I never forget the Boston explosion after they lost in 2012 in OT to Joel Ward on the Caps. That was my first seeing how people were gleefully taking to Twitter and such to be racist.

Panthers have looked like **** far more than the Lightning looking good. Against the Caps they didn't look great either but Verhaeghe was a monster. Their best players just seem to be turtling under pressure.
