He's 5 years older. He's at and soon to be leaving his prime, Tkachuk isn't even at his yet.

Paying for past production is the worst thing a team can do, they would hate the last 2-3 years of that deal.
I don't know much about their situation, but I just would have thought that the Panthers would be going for it again in each of the next few years.

If so, does Tkachuk really give them better odds of winning?

If not, does this mean they are retooling, getting younger, and aiming to be contenders again in a few years? From what I read on here, their asset pool seems to be shallow.

Zito said he was going to try and extend Huberdeau this off season. Obviously that didn't happen. My guess is he didn't want to commit 10M to a guy entering his 30s and went for the younger guy about to enter his prime, and added the rest of the pieces requires to make that switch.

But to answer your question... No, they're probably not a better team next year, but they're probably a better team the following 7 years after that. I'm not sure they were going to win a Cup with that team as is so swapping Huberdeau for Tkachuk might be the shakeup they need to take the next step.

Will be a fun trade to look back at in a few years.

Seems doubtful since Zito never made an offer to Huberdeau camp

My guess would be after they saw what JG signed they decided they didn't want to give that money and term to Huberdeau so made this move instead. The comments of wanting to resign him also came out before Tkachuk said he wasn't signing. Things change.

The hawks absolutely should take on that contract if it could net them big time assets

Sure, in theory its reasonable idea

+ Bob even overpaid is still a quality #1 but problem is with bolded

The Panthers have traded all the quality assets the Hawks would want and with Lundell untouchable all that is left in Florida system is mostly average prospects and later picks

If they traded Bob they’re keeping Knight.

Then all they have left worth a damn is Lundell who I’m pretty sure they said is they are not open to moving.

So the starting price then is what… a 2026 and 2027 first rounder? Unrealistic.

I don’t know their prospect/young player pool so if they don’t have anything than ya, you don’t make that move. Future picks years down the line don’t do anything for me like you said

Thanks for the discussion about Florida. Moving Bob will probably be impossible due Bob's NMC as brought up by another poster and the fact that SK may not be ready. How about this for a trade assuming SK breaks out: Kane and Allan for Lundell, Bennett (or a pic) and Bob. Panthers than resign Huberdeau and Kane assuming they don't resign Hornquist.

WTF

We give up Kane + Allen and take on Bob's contract? And Bennett is not a big prize, Hell Domi could produce 40-50 pts this coming year which would be on par with Bennett last season

Also, they traded Huberdeau a few days ago and blindsided him and his agent (Never made him extension offer)

And Hornqvist is on last legs and guy they likely try to dump the rest of summer

That or he held out for too much and the market dried up.

Combo of that and the term he’s probably asking for.

I don’t have a huge issue with him at 8M for a few years…. But I wouldn’t even consider him at 8M for 5 years or more. 4 is probably the most I’d consider.

In general or on the Hawks?

In general. He makes zero sense for the Hawks at any term or price.

I’m not entirely sure of Calgary’s situation moving forward, but without digging too much into that I’d wonder if 8M per on a 4 year deal is something both would consider. Maybe kick him half a mill per extra to take the shorter deal.

Beyond them there just aren’t a ton of other teams that do make sense unless he’s willing to go back to Colorado on a 1 year deal. Have to think at that point that’s maybe on the table.

In a hard cap world teams have to make decisions fast. There is usually only a couple options for a guy making 7+ and once teams are not getting an answer they have to act fast
