I'd rather have 8 years of Tkachuk than 1 year of Huberdeau

For me it's really that simple
Given that Calgary never had the option to keep Tkachuk for eight years, I don't know how that could possibly be considered a valid assessment of the trade.

If you view Pagnotta as reliable he says Huberdeau camp apparently was waiting for Panthers to begin contract extension talks with him

Zito never contacted his people about any extension and traded him instead

Also, reportedly the Flames already have been contacted by teams gauging if Huberdeau is available

Huberdeau just turned 29

People are acting like he is 34 years old

His play of last 4 years has been fantastic

18-19 = 30 goals + 62 assists for 92 pts in 82 games
19-20 = 23 goals + 55 assists for 78 pts in 69 games
20-21 = 20 goals + 41 assists for 61 pts in 55 games
21-22 = 30 goals + 85 assists for 115 pts in 80 games

It could be argued rather easily he has been a top 10 player in NHL over last 2 years. I dont think the first half of any potential longterm deal would be of great risk signing him and wingers like Huberdeau can be productive well into 30's

People talking about how he will never have season like he had should also consider Tkachuk season being bit of a fluke then and Tkachuk wont be having Johnny Hockey and Lindbolm to carry load in Florida either. It will be interesting to see if Barkov and Reinhart take steps back offensively without Huberdeau around

If they Panthers never even approached him and his side about extension it is pretty big slap in face given his play and role in turning Panthers franchise around IMO

He will be 30 by the time that deal kicks in. Do you want to be on the hook for a 10M hit for a 34-38 year old Huberdeau? Only way that would be tolerable is if there is a legit Cup window during the 30-34 age window, but right now there isn't unless he switches teams again.

Tkachuk's per 82 game stats are close to 30 goals a season and 70 points and his best days are arguable still ahead of him. He'll also be playing Barkov and possibly Reinhart which would be a hell of a top line.

I'd much rather pay for the best to come from a guy vs past performance.

I love how people are pointing out that Huberdeau and Weegar will be free agents and may not sign in Calgary to somehow say Florida won the trade. Not to mention a 1st round pick(when Florida may be declining) and a prospect. You realize Calgary can flip them, right? Huberdeau especially would fetch a king's ransom at the TDL.

And let's see if Tkachuk can even come close to replicating last season. I don't see it happening. I think it was a fluke.

I would have tried to hang onto Weegar because he's still a bargain at his cap hit, but his skating sucks and he has Campoli like mistakes which are just killer and regularly at that. I wouldn't touch him with his next contract. The fancy stats don't match the eye test with him, for me. Great player at his current cap hit, but not someone I'd want at a 7M cap hit or whatever his next deal ends up being.

I'm not going to get excited about a 2025 first late first rounder just yet. Could turn into something great, could be meh. Too far out to say.

Other kid is maybe a bottom sixer if lucky. He's a nothing piece. All reports from his draft year were that he was a huge reach in the 3rd round.

We will see how this trade looks in six months. I just don't see the upside for Florida. They're a better team with Huberdeau and Weegar than with Tkachuk. And they're still over the cap...?

Tkachuk HAS to be a PPG player going forward, or this trade is an absolute disaster for Florida.

We'll see. Still a lot to play out but I'd rather have the 24 year old on the rise vs the guy about to start the back 9 of his career. They're both great players.

Let's not also discount Florida was swept out of the playoffs in the second round this year, and a first round exit the year prior. I don't blame them for wanting to add some grit.

Barring major injury I would expect Calgary to be firmly in a playoff spot at the TDL. Does their GM then have the balls to move a big piece like Huberdeau or Weegar? I wouldn't bet on it.

Owners and the NHLPA need to restructure how they handle contracts. Players shouldn’t be asking for these 7-8 year mega deals that start in their 30’s. You’re simply not getting proper value back for your cap hits by doing this. Players should be paid the most amount of money during their best years.

On the other hand I think we’re going to start seeing more NHLers still be productive into their mid/late 30’s and playing at a Star level. Training and diets are so finely tuned now that these guys can probably play better for longer compared to to the league a few decades ago.

Players absolutely should be asking for them. GM's shouldn't be signing them.

The NHLPA is made up of people in the league. They aren't gonna be cool with making less early and then vote for a system that pays them less late.

Is Spencer Knight ready to be number one goalie? Could the Hawks take on Bob's contract? Could Huberdeau come back to the Panthers after a year?

Panthers have very little to offer for team to take on Bob unless they want to give away Lundell and Samoskevich which would essentially leave them with not much in way of young talent or prospect pool after Zito has traded away so much

Also Knight at times struggled last year so likely isn't ready for fulltime job and Bob was best Panther in playoffs but was basically left to fend for himself behind poor effort in front of him

Also, Bob has NMC and would control everything

4 more years at 10M per? Not a chance.
Assuming it was a deadline deal/next offseason deal, it would only be for three years, and would coincide with Toews/Kane being off the books. Hawks will have a lot of cap space.

Panthers would need to retain and attach good assets to deal

The Panthers have very little in prospects/picks left to attach to such a deal
