Am I the only one that thinks the trade looks better for Florida?

They get Tkachuk locked up for 8 years.

Meanwhile Huberdeau and Weegar are definitely gonna hit free agency and bounce out of Calgary. And Calgary certainly isn't winning the cup next year. So in the end they'll just wind up with nothing?

That trade is truly something

Wow

Not so sure of that

I could see him open to extension

Flames have $ to meet his likely demands and he is Canadian unlike the recently departed Americans who people always had questions on if they would stay in Calgary

I think he and Lindholm could form a very good duo long-term for Flames

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Great for CGY if Huberdeau re-signs, otherwise not so much.

If Hubs signs extension to me this becomes very lopsided in Flames favor

They did great given situation they were facing

And while Florida locked down a good player long-term, they took major step back as a team with this trade IMO

I think Hubs is better player than Tkachuk myself

Just saw they got Schwindt in deal as well

He just turned 21 yrs old a few months ago and has good potential. Had 40 pts in 72 games for his first professional season in Charlotte this past year

No, there's a few of you clowns out there. I personally think last season was an anomaly for Tkachuk and he will never have a season like that ever again. This is a bad, bad trade for Florida. Huberdeau for Tkachuk straight up is probably a closer deal, but I, personally, think Huberdeau is the better player.

Not a great comparison when Tkachuk is locked up for 8 more years and DBC might bolt after a single year.

The more I think about this deal the more I like it for Florida. I think they knew they weren't going to be able to resign Huberdeau, who is about to enter his 30s, so they locked up Tkachuk who is only 24 basically for what will be the best years of his career most likely. Weegar also a UFA after this season.

Not inconceivable to think Calgary ends up with a first rounder 3 years from now and a prospect drafted in the 3rd round from 2019. Even if Calgary extends Huberdeau... he'll be in his 30s at that point and likely declining throughout that contract.

Debrincat is still a RFA after next season

If your flames you talk right now about extension with Huberdeau and if he doesn't want one, do you look to move him now or risk holding onto him and ending up in scenario in which he eventually walks for nothing

Huberdeau + Weeger added to Flames lineup still has them good enough for playoffs and likely in mix for division title so they can't just trade them away at TDL or risk major backlash from fanbase if team is primed for playoffs

Calgary is in a tough spot. You can extend him, but that is probably going to be a huge overpayment to do so. They can't even keep their home grown talent. They're probably still a worse team today than they were compared to last year with Gaudreau and Tkachuk.

But if they're in a playoff spot, which I'd expect them to be, how do you sell the fan base that you're trading your top line winger and/or top pairing defenseman?

Now what would be interesting is if Calgary could somehow convince Kadri to sign a 1 year overpayment if he can't find the term this off season that he's looking for.

Then wait a year and get a shitload more value
That helps how? Calgary has no great prospects either, no future talent piling up, what is their success path?

The value here comes from what they can get in trades at the tdl from Huberdeau or Weeger.

I'd take Tkachuk over Huberdeau long term. Tkachuk is like 5 or 6 years younger, is a bitch to play against, and will be next to Barkov? Yowzers.

But when you add in the other pieces CGYs side looks better. CGY could sign both Hubs and Weeger and get a 1st.

If they dontsign them, FLA wins the deal IMO.

My attitude is that Florida overpaid and gave up a nice haul, but will Calgary benefit from that longterm? I doubt that they'll re-sign their newly acquired talent.

Don't discount the kid the Flames acquired as well

Seems like type of guy who has safe upside to thrive in NHL bottom 6 role

Calgary has a lot of time to gauge whether one or both of Huberdeau and Weegar are interested in signing with them. If not, they're going to get very good assets in trade for one or both of them.
