Played the 10 hour trial, have no reason to touch this game this year. It's utter garbage, that's what happens when sports games are based on micro transactions instead of having fun on it anymore.

It doesn't help when even the commentary's lost its charm. Try playing one of the earlier games - like PS2 and earlier. Sure, a lot of it is dopey as hell, especially in games like Rock the Rink, but it works. There was chemistry, and it got you invested in what you were doing. It also made you laugh, and it's still memorable to this day.

Nowadays, it's just bland, tepid, and matches the rest of the game in being those things.

Hows the gameplay this year compared to 23? Specifically shooting & scoring?

I found last year it was much harder (near impossible) to straight up beat a goalie with a shot from 'distance', alot of goals had to come around the net or on cross crease passes, whereas it was much easier in '22 to score with a great shooter from distance.

I use AlTito's sliders in franchise mode and it is more fun than 23, actually the most fun I had in a few years. I have a lot of variety in goals this year.

Online... yeah let's forget about that, same shit show as always. Gameplay is atleast 1 click too fast, hip checks are still broken and frustrating, hitting overpowered at times and there are still games where your passes won't connect and you lose every 50-50 battle, while the next game it's the other way around and you actually feel bad for the opponent. Also goalies teleporting from left to right to save cross crease passes. I get it that they wanted to reduce cross crease goals but that's just not the way to do it because it also robs you on perfectly played 2-0s which should not be happening. I could also swear that at launch, pass interceptions were waaaay higher. Just a feeling. And wouldn't be the first time they f*** up the gameplay tuners (which don't have a changelog, ofcourse)...
The bolded is so true I love Chel but its completely random with puck luck same with interceptions positioned perfectly and my guy refuses to have his blade on the ice not to mention pokechecks are locked on to player skates and passing sometimes it works and sometimes I pass it for a break away against nowhere near i was aiming.

There is so little consistancy to the game from one day to the next

One day, puck luck and goals go in. Next day you cant get a shot through as computer puts 5 guys in front of the net. Next day my passing is totally off.

Then i get 11 penalties in one game, zero the next. My goalie is letting every shot from bad angles in. At one point my goalie was fatigued 1:30 into a game and yes, that is with 3 min period sped up clock and after the pressure update.

Really hard to get any feel aside from frustration

At $53.99 CDN it was a pass from me. I can't get over not being able to turn off the pressure meter.

It's unfortunate that EA has absolutely destroyed sports games.... 2k isn't far behind. Wife and I were sick this weekend and I watched reviews on Madden, NHL and NBA 2k.... at half price refuse to buy any of them. I'm a fan of MLB the show but they are getting into that territory also unfortunately...

This is true. I have been waiting for a good game. I just keep getting game pass and playing old games.

Until EA predictably bought them, I would've liked to see Metalhead (Super Mega Baseball devs) make a hockey game. Wouldn't even have to have the NHL branding. Just make it as customizable as the baseball games, and I'd be happy as a clam.

I went back and just played NHL 20 for the simple be a pro and not the absolute shit mode they made and not updated for 3 years now.

Much better than spending 50 Canadian on this trash.

Honestly debating dusting off my OG Xbox and playing NHL 2k5 or NHL Hitz

New EASHL playoff format is much better than the old way. The games actually feel meaningful and we don’t have to deal with that awful outdoor rink and all of the glitches that come with it.

Brilliant new documentary here on NHL 94:

None of HUT nonsense etc, just pure fun gaming. EA could learn a lot from this, especially when nobody is going to fondly recall the current generation of games in 30 years' time.

Literally everyone involved in gaming today could learn a lot from this. Personally, I think gaming peaked with the PS2 era. PS3/360 era was the beginning of the end.

I disagree. The beginning of the end for sports games was when they found out that they could trap people into micro transitions. The ultimate team shit led to all focus on these modes to generate money.

*Only play offline.

I prefer 2024 over 2023 so far. Seems some minor tweaks have made it better to play defense and the offensive zone setups seem better defined.
Like this year the Powerplay seems to have variation depending on the setup you choose.

For shooting, I can net goals with Ekblad or Montour from the point. Mostly screened, but you can score from distance with a player with a good wrister/slapshot. Even a player like Verhaeghe I can score goals from far out in the slot.

Have also scored maybe 6 goals from the point where it bounces off the glass onto the goalies back and rolls in.

The pressure feature can get annoying but I get the purpose of it.

I really like the new format too as you said every game feels meaningful and there's actual play off feel to the games. There's also a pretty cool trophy presentation if you mange to win all 4 rounds;).

Shockingly EA actually did something to improve EASHL...

New playoff format is excellent. It was always so meaningless in the past and, like you said, the outdoor rinks were just a nightmare.

Got it last week, I like it. Only do Be A Pro career thing. Had to change the buttons as R3 for reverse hit sucks when shooting w R3

Its just a $50 hockey game that scratches my 'do i own a $50 hockey game?" itch.
