Gorton specifically said he wouldnt consider messier or anyone else without experience
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but B.U. coach David Quinn remains a viable candidate to take over the Rangers, who wrapped up their organizational meetings Friday. It is believed GM Jeff Gorton is waiting to talk to coaches who are currently working in the playoffs (NHL or AHL) before reaching a decision.
Friedman said he wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers go with someone who has never coached in the NHL before, in the latest 31 Thoughts.
Yeah, that observation isn’t exactly a revelation. No one would be.
If we hire Trotz, that would be a severe disappointment. Was reminded that Gorton spent a couple of days in Toronto in and around the lottery. Suspect he probably talked to Smith and Keefe while he was there.
Thinking out loud...wondering if they are waiting to see who is coaching in Washington next year? Trotz or Riordan? Perhaps the loser is what the Rangers are waiting for.
Funny, Nill is elite, yet he has peak Seguin, Benn and Klingberg and couldn't even make the playoffs. And he's got one of the worst drafting resumes of any currently employed GM.
Dallas imo should be very concerned that they have had the hardest pieces to acquire for a few years now and are still not even getting close to a cup. Not making the playoffs in a league where half the teams make it does not scream "elite GM" or a team "at their peak window" - when you factor in that the team in question has a top notch 1C, 1D and a top winger, it's even more worrying.
Maybe Montgomery will be the difference for them? I understand him wanting to go there for any number of reasons, but I'm not sure how anyone who even sort of pays attention to this league can look at where they've been with the players they have and not think that there's some serious issue(s) somewhere.
Because he's good at his job?Why isn't Chicago firing their coach?

There is no rule prohibiting conversation as long as permission is requested and granted. Just like the NFL.IMHO unlikely. If you mean “talked” in the context of the Rangers search for a HC, I doubt it is allowed and I don’t think Gorton would walk the line that could be viewed as close to tampering.

No and no.Sure but we would have heard if such permission was given. If my team is still playing I’m not granting such permission.
He’s been sitting around for over a week. Why wouldn’t they have? This is hockey guys, hockey people aren’t like the rest of the world. The NFL lets assistant coaches interview during the playoffs.Toronto will have not given permission for Keefe to be interviewed b/c he's still in the AHL playoffs. Smith, however, could have been on the table since Toronto got knocked in the first round.
