Whatever the reason(s) Montgomery decided on Dallas instead of the Rangers--it's over with him for us and I don't really care about him anymore. If he feels a need to suck up to his new boss by saying nice things about him--that's cool but I'm not really all that impressed with the results the Stars have been getting with Nill as their GM. Yeah--big names and?--what have they done? Really it might have just come down to Dallas really just wanting one guy and willing to sign him right away and the Rangers wanted to still talk to people who are not yet available to talk to so he took what was available now.

There are more fish in the sea.

Friedman said he wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers go with someone who has never coached in the NHL before, in the latest 31 Thoughts.

If DJ Smith gets hired, I'm sure he and Zibby can sort out their times on the locker room turnstyles.

Was reminded that Gorton spent a couple of days in Toronto in and around the lottery. Suspect he probably talked to Smith and Keefe while he was there.

Thinking out loud...wondering if they are waiting to see who is coaching in Washington next year? Trotz or Riordan? Perhaps the loser is what the Rangers are waiting for.

If we hire Trotz, that would be a severe disappointment.

Now, Rierden? Much more intriguing. As for Trotz, no interest in a guy who took two decades to reach round 3.

Funny, Nill is elite, yet he has peak Seguin, Benn and Klingberg and couldn't even make the playoffs. And he's got one of the worst drafting resumes of any currently employed GM.

Dallas imo should be very concerned that they have had the hardest pieces to acquire for a few years now and are still not even getting close to a cup. Not making the playoffs in a league where half the teams make it does not scream "elite GM" or a team "at their peak window" - when you factor in that the team in question has a top notch 1C, 1D and a top winger, it's even more worrying.

Maybe Montgomery will be the difference for them? I understand him wanting to go there for any number of reasons, but I'm not sure how anyone who even sort of pays attention to this league can look at where they've been with the players they have and not think that there's some serious issue(s) somewhere.

Maybe Nill gave Montgomery a 6 page hand written essay on why he was a great GM and why Dallas is such a great team.

Realistically, they have the better roster and are only two years removed from a Division Title. It's possible they are really missing the presence of Goligoski.

Trotz isn't the guy. He walked into a good situation in Washington and he's had years to get his team his team finally to the the third round.....and he's also too old at this point. This team doesn't have an Ovechkin, Backstrom or Kuznetsov for him to fall back on.

IMO--a younger, teaching coach--maybe Keefe or maybe another AHL guy or Smith or maybe a college guy like Quinn or Sandelin--that would be the better way for us to go.

IMHO unlikely. If you mean “talked” in the context of the Rangers search for a HC, I doubt it is allowed and I don’t think Gorton would walk the line that could be viewed as close to tampering.

There is no rule prohibiting conversation as long as permission is requested and granted. Just like the NFL.

Just because you and I don’t know about doesn’t mean it hasn't happened. Keefe’s team has been off for over a week.

I’m a little amazed at the lack of respect for Trotz. For years he developed players with a low spending team in Nashville. This year the Caps are in the ECF with six rookies in the lineup. If he leaves Washington, I’d hire him in a minute. He’s not a fresh pretty face but he is terrific with young players. If not Trotz, Rierden would be fine with me too.

Sure but we would have heard if such permission was given. If my team is still playing I’m not granting such permission.

Toronto will have not given permission for Keefe to be interviewed b/c he's still in the AHL playoffs. Smith, however, could have been on the table since Toronto got knocked out of the playoffs a few days prior to the draft lottery.

He’s been sitting around for over a week. Why wouldn’t they have? This is hockey guys, hockey people aren’t like the rest of the world. The NFL lets assistant coaches interview during the playoffs.
