31 Thoughts: What follows for Leafs after Dubas promotion? - Sportsnet.ca

Montgomery didn't want to walk into a rebuild? It sounds like it.
Funny, Nill is elite, yet he has peak Seguin, Benn and Klingberg and couldn't even make the playoffs. And he's got one of the worst drafting resumes of any currently employed GM.

Dallas imo should be very concerned that they have had the hardest pieces to acquire for a few years now and are still not even getting close to a cup. Not making the playoffs in a league where half the teams make it does not scream "elite GM" or a team "at their peak window" - when you factor in that the team in question has a top notch 1C, 1D and a top winger, it's even more worrying.

Maybe Montgomery will be the difference for them? I understand him wanting to go there for any number of reasons, but I'm not sure how anyone who even sort of pays attention to this league can look at where they've been with the players they have and not think that there's some serious issue(s) somewhere.

Exactly.

Nill has been horrendous and is fortunate that he still has a job.

Dallas is no doubt closer to winning than the Rangers are right now, but in 2 years that probably won’t be the case.

Don’t fault Montgomery for going there at all. It’s tough to sell anyone on walking into a situation where it’s going to be awfully tough to win when they have another opportunity which has a greater shot at providing instant gradification.

Yeah, agreed. I get preferring Dallas as a new coach in the league, but something is off down there given the lack of success they have with some very, very nice pieces.

You nailed it with your last post, horrendous drafting/player development.

They’ve whiffed on almost every 1st rounder they’ve had lately. They’re like the direct opposite of Winnipeg.

This must be the most secretive coach search in the history of sports. Nobody knows nothing.

Edit: Any coach trying to build a successful NHL career would choose Dallas before NY. They have a star core and we have a bunch of nobodys, in the beginning of a rebuild, in a city that doesn't have much patience, rebuilding or not. It was a no brainer for him.

Dallas has missed the playoffs two years in a row and three times in the last four years. They were supposed to be good last season. Nill didn't do anything at the trading deadline. We will see what happens. Seguin is the summer of 2019 Tavares.

Yeah but they have a star core that somehow can’t even get out of the bottom half of the league. And they have literally the worst drafting GM there is.

Perhaps Gorton should come down and coach the team himself.
Slats had no problem with it.
Sather was a player for a long time and was a successful coach before he joined the Rangers.

Gorton's history and education is more towards the business and overarching management of things.

Doesn't seem like the kind of guy to come down and coach.

Friedman has mentioned DJ Smith. I think the Rangers would be more interested in him than Keefe, with the NHL experience.

I wonder if it would be possible if the Rangers hired DJ as a head coach and then Smith decided to hire Keefe as an assistant.

Would bet my house Messier has no chance in hell of becoming coach.
