I saw some people shitting on that Toronto deal, I think it's pretty good for them. A hefty price but if O'Reilly can be a shutdown center and Acciari can bring physicality to their lineup they'll be better for it. That forward group just got a lot more versatile.
HFBoards judges trades strictly in the value of assets exchanged. While often placing a slight value markup on anything with greater futures potential (picks and prospects).

But as you described this deal fills a specific need for the Leafs. At some point you have to pay a premium for what you need.

I’m still not sure it gets them out of the first round.

Speaking as someone who likes the trade for the Leafs chances... I absolutely hope it doesn't.

I admit it may speak poorly of my character, but it is enjoyable as hell watching Leafs media go through existentialist rationalizations every offseason.

So I guess even young GMs can trade away the future for the present? ;)
Except in the case of Leafs the reaction by Toronto Social/Media...

"Wow, how forward thinking of Dubas! Only Dubas could recognize that to win in the modern NHL you need to have depth to roll four lines!"

Of course, the Toronto Social/Media will ignore that three years ago they were criticizing the Pageau to the Isles trade, and five years ago were championing paying for top six talent while backfilling the bottom six as the best way to build a champion.

Disclaimer: Yes I am cheapening myself by using hyperbole. But you know... you gotta cut loose every once in a while. :sarcasm:

If Dubas knows he can't re-sign Matthews, I think it would have made more sense to try and trade for a younger player like Horvat or Meier, extend them and then trade Matthews in the off season for whatever else is needed.

With RoR, they are essentially going for it this season because he is assuredly NOT a Matthews replacement long term.

I guess they can try to extend RoR as their 3C and then figure out the rest, but it is more of a gamble and requires a lot if additional work to rebalance the roster.

Feels like a good trade from the Leafs side. Not a lot to give up, other than the first rounder. Although I am still not sure they have the pieces/right mix to go deep.

Guerin is not exactly conventional. And while still having to pay Parise and Suter until (I believe) 2029, he needs to find creative ways to bring in cheap talent.
going deep is literally getting past the 1st or 2nd round for the Atlantic Division, I think the Leafs will have what it takes to beat Tampa this year as I think the 3 straight finals appearances will weigh heavy on them, and than it will come down to the Bruins, I think a Leafs - Bruins series the winner of that is going to take the cup, hopefully it is the B's

We'll see. Cirelli missed half the season, Point missed a lot of playoff time, Elliott has already spelled Vasilevskiy 14 times. I'm not writing Tampa off until someone proves they can beat them in 7. The 2nd choice behind them to take east is the Rangers

The biggest issue I see with Tampa come big boy season is not having 27

He was someone that badly needed a change of scenery, glad it's working out for him. Hope he keeps it up.
They're also using him differently. They're putting in all over the place, slot, front of net, etc. I hope he does well also. Seems like a trade that helps both teams

Beau's two goals were tips looks like from really great shots from the point. I don't think Beau ever played in frontt of the net really and his line is really talented. Those two shots I don't think anyone on the Islanders could shoot it like that how Beau got both of his goals. So yes, the Nucks have better forwards than us for sure we could use any one of those players.

When was the last time we had a full line of three great players? or 2 great and 1 decent....I can't even remember honestly.

Bossy Trottier Gillies

He just needed a center!
Elias Petterson > Mathew Barzal

Closer to the net seems to serve him better than shooting and missing from the perimeter or having to think about making a move on a breakaway.

His situation sucks. Never really know the whole story but wonder. Be nice if he moved to a front office role with the team.

I don't like the way Chicago handled the entire Toews/Kane situation. They needed a re-tool but botched it so bad that they need to go full tank. That team never should have been as bad as the front office let them get.

This is one of the main reasons why Horvat had so many goals with Vancouver.

He's a master tipper and deflector.

Anyone think he's going to be getting nearly as many goals like that here?

Just ask Anders.... If he were playing for a long shot-generating team like Vancouver, I think he'd be netting upwards of 35 a season.

I'm not quite sure what it is or why it's so different for a team like Vancouver (Quinn is generally a big difference), but I've always felt we don't make optimal use of Lee's presence in front of the net because we're not sending in the types of pucks - often mere floaters - that guys like him are great at capitalizing on. Until this season, I thought that's because Trotz teams tended to hold back on just getting anything and everything to the net.

Honestly, it's one of things that worried me about picking up Horvat. I was seeing all these awesome tips and deflections and rebound goals out west and simply thought to myself, "Are our players going to generate those kinds of opportunities for him???"
