The Caps beat the Bruins then lose at home against the Sharks.

The Pens dominate the Ducks and then get get crushed by the Kings.

All the teams vying for the 7/8 playoff spot have warts. Big warts.

I still would love it if we somehow snuck in but that joy would be extinguished within a week once the playoffs start.
Better to get there and lose then not get there at all. Door is still open for us.

OTT, FLA, and DET all managed to beat their western conference opponent last night.

At least LA beat Buffalo out west. Only "help" we got.

So, Ottawa played a tight one against Calgary last night. It looks like rookie Kevin Mandolese could be getting his first ever NHL start. This is one of those games where we have an *automatic* advantage.

Under the circumstances, an absolute no-lose.

But we've had automatic advantages against both Vancouver and Montreal, and found ways to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

I watched the 1st two periods of that game. Sabres did a good job of beating themselves. Gave up shorthanded goal, took too many men penalty, lost 60 percent faceoffs, 1-5 on PP while Kings were 2-3.

Looks like Ovechkin will be out for a while. Let’s hope it’s nothing too serious. Add that to Wilson and others being injured and the Caps might have a rough time of it. It’s a shitty way for the Isles to have an opportunity to gain ground but here it is.

Incidentally this is all that had to happen with Barry Trotz. None of this BS about firing him to do him a favor so he can take care of his father. Simply make an announcement like this and name an interim coach until Barry returned.

Very small rumbling that Barry may be getting courted by Calgary. I guess Sutter has fallen out of favor

keep it universal though because Barry will be on everybody's short list.

i think he may be waiting for Toronto's house of cards to crumble for him to pick up the urgent call button

I still think he's never coaching again.

So reports coming out that Harvard LHD Henry Thrun (a former fourth round pick) will NOT be signing with the Anaheim Ducks and will be exploiting the college loophole.

Ducks draft pick Henry Thrun opting for free agency

As soon as I heard about this, I had to check to see what team his family grew up rooting for and, lo and behold, per his Wiki page -

"The Thrun family have confessed to being fans of New York Rangers which started when father David would frequently attend games from a young age whilst growing up in New Rochelle, New York before moving to Lancaster, New York."

I am shocked. Shocked I tell you!

I guess we will have to wait and see what happens, but if any other team was exploiting this loophole to get free talent as much as the Rags (K Hayes, Vesey, Fox - even Tim Erixon to a different degree), it would have been closed years ago.

I guess we should at least be thankful that the Bruins were the team to draft McAvoy, because otherwise I have no doubt he would have also explored using the loophole to worm his way to the Rags too.

Has there ever been a team with so many advantages over the years, yet so few championships?

from all i've read and seen quotes from him along he way, i think he wants to get back but who the hell knows. i retired at 61, a year early before i started collecting. if Barry is set financially, maybe he's like me and never wants to lift a finger in an employment capacity again
