While Shattenkirk hasn't been great, he has at least not been a complete liability and still has value in a trade. Staal won't be bought out because he's the one real leader they have who doesn't yell at the kids when they make a mistake.

Marc Staal is in many ways that older guy in the office who has been around forever, but doesn't understand how the latest tools work, yet employees and management look to him for guidance as a mentor
why don't we waive Shatty and see if.someone takes him. If not bury him in Hartford. Steal has a NMC of I would do the same

JJ died unexpectedly last year or so, this may have been only 1st or possibly 2nd awarding of this

The award was renamed in his honor after he died but was previously the USA college hockey player of the year award. Didn’t see a list of winners for that though

Didn’t know this award existed...I thought the Hobey Baker was basically the college player of the year

the hobey baker award goes to the top college player award by the NCAA. the jim johansson award goes to the top college player awarded by USA hockey. So big difference is that hobey baker can go to a non-american playing in college aka cale makar who is canadian

Finally found the list at usahockey.com

Scott Wheeler had Fox 9th in his 2016 redraft, ahead of Girard, Hart, Chychrun, Fabbro, Borgstrom, and Kyrou (Wheeler: A 2016 NHL Draft re-draft and retrospective look...):

"Remember when I said that this ranking was going to be based on my evaluations? Well here we are at the point where a kid who has yet to play an NHL game gets ranked ahead of several who are a season or two deep into their NHL careers. I’m confident Fox is going to be that good. He’s one of those players who is going to spend so much time with the puck on his stick on offence that concerns over the ability of a smaller defender to be a No. 1 are quickly going to be muted."

Wow. Thats high praise there.

Honestly, I'm keeping my expectations low with Fox. With Rykov, Shesty, Kravstov and Kakko coming in (in addition to the current kids) its going to be some kind of an exciting camp and season watching them grow.

I think the key will be adding Miller to the mix on D, when he comes. And if Gorts and Co. can find a way to move and steal another stud from this draft... watch out

Nice!

This made my heart skip a beat!

Fox is a stud who just had the most productive season by an NCAA defenceman (1.45 points per game!) since I began doing this whole scouting things six years ago (breaking the record of 1.08 points per game that he tied two seasons before). This is a kid, who, as a defenceman, posted 17 more points than his nearest teammate while playing to a plus-23 rating on a Harvard team that spent more time outside of USA Today’s national NCAA ranking than it did inside it. He’s going to immediately become an impact player for the Rangers and will probably go down as the second-biggest steal of the 2016 draft (if that’s possible for a kid who never played for the team that drafted him) to Alex DeBrincat. Like DeBrincat, I was considerably higher on Fox than the NHL consensus, so that’s good, but I was still too low on him. The kid led the NCAA in points per game (not just defencemen, everyone)!
